Disaster Researchers for Justice fully supports that students receiving a B.S.

in Engineering in
the U.S. should receive instruction about engineering failures and the lessons they teach. As
disaster researchers we recognize that the engineering students of today will be designing the
engineered structures of tomorrow. Engineering does not happen in the abstract, it directly
impacts people and communities. It is vital that engineering students understand not only the
good that their work can bring to communities but also the harm. We encourage not only
learning about past engineering failures but also how engineering can be used to help promote
disaster justice in communities across the country.
