to 5 and a decimal point. (Refer to the attached

file)
 Each group will form the number given by the
teacher.
 The first group to form the number correctly
wins the game.
Example:
I am a 5-digit decimal number. My tenths digit is
twice my hundredths digit,
and my one’s digit is the sum of my tenths and ten
thousandths digit. My
thousandths digit is a place value holder. (5.4201)

(note: The teacher may provide his/her own)

Ask:
a. Who do you think will offer the first
handshake after the game? Why? (Answers
may vary)
b. If you were the winner/loser in a game,
what will you do? Why? (Answers may
vary)
B. Relay Game
(Identifying place value of underlined digit.)
 Teacher will prepare decimal number cards
with an underlined digit. (Refer to the
attached file under relay game)
 As the teacher flashes the card, the first pupil
in a row will write his answer on a piece of
paper as the group’s answer sheet.
 He then passes it to his teammate next to him
for his answer to the number flashed by the
teacher.
 As soon as the last pupil in a row has written
his answer, he then submits their answer sheet
to the teacher for checking.
 The group with the most number of correct
answers wins.

(Answers may vary)
c. Who needs carbon dioxide?
(Plants)
d. How will you lessen the percent of carbon
dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere?
(Answers may vary)
(Note: Integrate Science concepts)
C. Presenting examples of ACTIVITY 2

concepts and practicing The teacher discusses the steps estimating the sums and
new skills #2 differences of decimal numbers.
(Refer to Discussion under Attachment.)
Group Activity “Pass It On” Game
 Teacher prepares the following:
Situation Card:

Your group has solicited Php 5,395.20 for the

victims of the landslide in Naga. You will buy
relief goods good for 25 families.

MAIL ORDER CATALOG

Items Prices
Rice Php 1985.50
Sardines Php 300.75
Beef Loaf Php 350.25
Kamote Php 100.25
Sanitary Bag Php 90.50/set

Mechanics:
 The class should be grouped by column.
 The teacher provides each group the situation card, a
mail-order catalog, and order card.
 The first pupil in the row selects 4 items and writes
these with the corresponding prices on the order card,
then passes this to the pupil next to him.
 The second pupil writes the rounded off amount for
each item, then passes the order card to his teammate.
 The third pupil gives the estimated sum of all the
items.
 The fourth pupil gives the estimated difference.
 The fifth pupil computes the actual sum and difference,
and then compares it with the estimated sum and
difference.
 As soon as all members of the group are finished, they
submit their answers to the teacher for checking.
 The first group to finish with correct answers wins.

Day 2

Content: Number and Number Sense (Rounding Decimal Numbers and Estimating
Sums and Differences

DISCUSSIONS:

Rounding decimal is a technique used to estimate or approximate values.

Rounding is commonly used to limit the number of decimal places.

To round a decimal number:

a. Determine first the rounding place.

b. Then look at the digit to its right.
c. If the digit to the right of the rounding place is greater than or equal to
5 add 1 to the digit in the rounding place and drop all the digits to its
right.
d. If the digit in the right of the rounding place is 4 or less than, we round
down. This is done by leaving the last decimal place as it is given and
discarding all the digits to its right.

In estimating the sums and differences of decimals, round off the decimals
then proceed to addition or subtraction.
