Answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences only.

1) Which ballet term/s are you familiar with? Which are new to you?

I am most familiar with the following terms; Port de bras, Jeté, Plié, Demi,
Relevé, Sauté, and Tendu. Those were the terms I heard the most and remember until
now when I used to attend ballet classes when I was younger. Devant, Écarté, Échappé,
and Soubresaut, on the other hand, are terms that are not familiar to me.

2) What do you need to remember when doing exercises in different ballet body
alignments?

From personal experience, one of the most important things to remember is to

have good posture and balance. It is easier to perform the exercises if you look straight
and not make any unnecessary movements that could ruin the process. We must always
practice having good posture so that the movements we do don’t accidentally hurt us.

DIG DEEPER

What activities outside of ballet do you think share similarities with these movements. How can
you relate these fundamentals to daily activities?

Two daily activities that came to mind when thinking of similar movements to ballet
fundamentals are house cleaning and public commuting. I feel like there are a lot of activities
that involve the use of both the hands and feet, but these two are the ones that require actual
workout and repetition. Notable examples of the use of ballet fundamentals for these are the
constant bending of legs and feet for travelling similar to Plié and the important function of the
arms in Port de bras. These fundamentals are essential not only for ballet, but also for the little
movements we do in our daily lives—house cleaning and public commuting in this case.
