Alternator Terminals Explained

Alternators often have several connection terminals, each with their own speci c function. When tting
like for like there's no issue, but somnetimes you need to wire something up, or adapt a unit to t an
application... so what is what?

Terminal De nition Notes

A BATTERY Comes from the word ‘Accumulator’
B BATTERY Main Battery Feed
B+ BATTERY Main Battery Feed
C CENTRE Neutral, ‘Half-Voltage’, centre point of a Y-connected stator
COM COMPUTER Computer Communication
D+ WARNING LIGHT Comes from the old ‘Dynamo Positive’ on a generator
DFM DYNAMO FIELD MODULATIONDuty Cycle signal from the ECU
E WARNING LAMP Comes from the word ‘Excitation’
F FIELD Normally found on Externally Regulated units
FR FIELD REGULATION Voltage Signal from the ECU
G GROUND Chassis of the vehicle
I INDICATOR Warning Lamp

M FIELD Normally found on older Externally Regulated units
N NEUTRAL Neutral, ‘Half-Voltage’, centre point of a Y-connected stator
P PULSE Stator Pulse. Used for rev-counters
R RELAY Output to charge relays, electric choke, etc
S SENSE Battery Voltage sense wire
S (FORD)STATOR Stator Pulse. Used for rev-counters
T TACHO Stator Pulse. Used for rev-counters
W WAVEFORM Stator Pulse. Used for rev-counters
