Introduction
Mechatronics engineering is a discipline that merges mechanics, electronics and computing to design
and develop intelligent automated systems. In this introduction, we will explore the foundations of this
exciting area of engineering, its importance today, and its impact on various industrial fields. From
autonomous robots to advanced control systems, mechatronics plays a crucial role in automating
processes and creating innovative solutions. Throughout this conversation, we will explore the key
concepts and exciting applications of mechatronics engineering.
Origin of mechatronics
The history of mechatronics begins with the need to create machines or devices with a single purpose
“To facilitate a boring, complex or dangerous task” such as automatic machines, robots and
programs.
The evolution of mechatronics makes it possible to create and manipulate remote mechanisms and
operations, progressively adding micro-sensors and micro actuators. In this way, it becomes a set of
engineering in which all its functions are used in a single product, turning it into a broader and more
utilitarian area for the development and comfort of human life.
George Devol, the creator of industrial robotics.
In 1948, the first robotic arm emerged, a tool that today dominates vehicle assembly lines.
He was interested in designing a machine that was easy to operate and applied for the first robotics
patents in 1954 (granted until 1961). The first company to produce a robot was Unimation (Universal
Automatic), founded by Devol and Joseph F. Engelberger in 1956, and was based on Devol's original
patents. Unimation robots were also called programmable transfer machines, since their main use at
first was to transfer objects from one point to another, less than three meters away. Mechatronics
today
AIM:
Automate machinery: this is how it is made agile, productive and reliable.
Creation of intelligent products that, above all, respond to the needs of human beings.
Harmonize mechanical and electronic components (until now mechanics and electronics did not use
the same terms, which made the manufacturing or repair processes of different equipment difficult).
The main industries that use mechatronics are:
Companies in the automation industry: companies that use computerized and electromechanical
systems or elements to control machinery or industrial processes.

What is Mechatronic Engineering?

Mechatronics Engineering is a career that combines knowledge of mechanics, electronics,
computing, and control systems. The objective of a Mechatronic Engineer is to improve automated
processes through the design, planning and development of products and services that are applied in
industries such as, for example, automotive and aeronautics.
It is a career in which you obtain the necessary tools to master Industry 4.0, since mechatronics and
industrial automation require experts in techniques for the design and construction of machines and
emerging technologies to systematize processes in industries.
During their training, a Mechatronic Engineer acquires the capabilities in the application of
knowledge, tools and skills to contribute to competitiveness in industrial production.
Importance
The importance of mechatronic engineering lies in the fact that it allows the solution conception, basic
engineering, detailed engineering, design, construction, integration, control, commissioning and
validation in low field protocol standards and tests.
Thanks to this important career, today we enjoy many comforts that facilitate different activities in our
lives and that contribute to the progress of society.

The seven branches that incorporate mechatronics are:

1. Robotics
Mechatronic engineers specialized in robotics study the interactions between mechanical and
electrical systems to design machines that can perform simple to the most sophisticated tasks
without human intervention, combining computing, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and
machine learning to transform electric motors. Simple into automated systems that offer greater
efficiency and reliability.
2. Fluid mechatronics
This branch studies the behavior of gases and liquids and the forces they generate to operate
aircraft engines, wind turbines, hydraulic brakes and heart valves.
3. Mechatronics of solids
In this branch, mechatronics engineers study the deformation and movement of solid materials to
exploit the forces they generate. The range of materials commonly used in this field are steel,
plastics, wood and biological materials.
4. Ecomecatronics
This branch focuses on the application of mechatronics technology to reduce the ecological
impact of machinery and optimize its efficiency, and limit the use of natural resources and promote
sustainable development.
5. Servomechatronics
This branch is part of control engineering that develops automated devices by detecting errors
with negative loop feedback mechanisms to modify mechanical position, speed and other
variables to ensure desired results.
6. Medical mechatronics
Medical mechatronics is an emerging technology based on principles from various domains,
including biosignal fusion, real-time clinical data analysis, and electromechanical system design to
create innovative applications such as network-based post-stroke rehabilitation. Artificial neurons,
or the repair of circulatory systems with advanced genetic algorithms.
7. Thermal mechatronic systems
Mechatronics engineers are responsible for designing modular systems with precise sensors in
which temperature plays an extremely important role in the overall performance of the system.
What are the curricula for mechatronics engineering?
1. Programming,
2. Electricity and Magnetism,
3. Electrical Circuit Analysis,
Statics and Dynamics,
5. Control Systems,
6. Computer Aided Industrial Drawing
7. Strength of Materials
8. Thermodynamics,
9. Automation and Robotics
