GOVERNMENT POLYTECHNIC NANDURBAR (YEAR 2023-24)

NON FERROUS METALS AND ALLOYS

DEFINE:-
Non-ferrous metals or alloys are defined as materials that are not iron-based like their ferrous counterparts.
Common non-ferrous metals include copper, aluminum and lead. Ferrous metals contain iron making most of
these metals have a magnetic property. Non-ferrous metals are found in the Earth as chemical compounds.

1. COPPER AND ITS ALLOYS

 COPPER ZINC ALLOYS
Brasses are copper zinc alloys. In general, they have good strength and corrosion resistance, although their structure and
properties are a function of zinc content. Alloys containing up to approximately 35% zinc are single phase alloys, consisting of
a solid solution of zinc and alpha copper.
 COPPER TIN ALLOY
Copper tin alloys or tin bronzes are known for their corrosion resistance. Tin bronzes are stronger and more ductile than red
and semi red brasses.

2. ALUMINIUM AND ITS ALLOYS

 Y-ALLOYS
Y alloy is a nickel-containing aluminium alloy. It was developed by the British National Physical Laboratory during World War
I, in an attempt to find an aluminium alloy that would retain its strength at high temperatures. Duralumin, an aluminium alloy
containing 4% copper was already known at this time.
 HINDALIUM
Hindalium is the alloy of aluminium, magnesium, manganese, chromium and silicon etc. Cooking in Hindalium or Indalium
kadai orally does not let the food be harmful, but recommend to transfer the food in Steal or Brass container after cooking.
Indolium kadai uruli for cooking is excellent for frying, stir fry and saute.

 DURALUMIN
The Dural Aluminium Alloy Bar is made from a high-strength alloy that provides excellent durability and resistance to wear
and tear, making it ideal for use in orthotics and prosthetics. It is also lightweight, which is important for patients who need
to wear these devices for extended periods.
