Lesson
Computer Peripheral
1 Devices
In your previous lesson, you tackled about the parts, and types of computer
system unit. For you to explore more on computer, there are other computer
devices that you connect to your computer via wires or wireless to provide services
like speaker which produce sound if you play music, the monitor to display images
as well as for you to watch movies, among others
What’s In
Before you proceed to the next lesson, let us review the previous lesson that
you have tackled.

What’s New
I have here an activity for you. Your task is to label the different computer
peripherals devices. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

2. Barcode Reader
A Barcode reader is a specialized input tool widely used
for inventory management in retail and other industrial
sectors. Lasers or LEDs can be used as light sources
by Barcode readers and can scan one or two-
dimensional Barcode. The device mostly use USB
connection while modern Barcode devices use Wi-Fi
connection.
3. Digitizers
They are one of the technologies used by visual artists
to render arts and images in the digital world. This
powerful device can do painting, sketching, cartooning,
animation, and other related activities. The device
receives input from the sensitive flat surface that
recognizes any activities done on it. If an artist presses
against the surface, the output will be shown directly
on the screen. Most of today’s digitizer device use a
USB or Wireless technology to connect to the Source: McGraw-Hill
computer. There are also updated digitizer that you Education
can draw directly on the surface of the device screen.
4. Digital Camera and Webcams
Digital cameras are handy and portable devices which
are usually used to capture images and record videos
of everything, while the webcam is a computer-
connected camera. The webcam can be connected via I
/ O port of computer system via USB or Wi-Fi and has
no self-contained mechanism for recording. The
purpose is to directly transfer the captured image or
video to the computer. Web cams with wired and
wireless NIC interfaces are prevalent for direct network
connection.
5. External Drive
An HDD drive with its own power is mounted outside
the PC system enclosure and connected to the PC
through the USB port while the USB flash drive is a
storage device also connected via the USB port.
6
7. Keyboards
It is one common primary input device of a PC. The
common use of this device is for you to input data like
character, numbers, and special characters. Most of
the modern keyboards uses USB and Wi-Fi connection.
Moreover, the device is plug and play-- no need for
software driver to install.
8. KVM Switches
A keyboard, video, mouse known as (KVM) switch is a
device which control multiple computers using only
single keyboard, mouse, and monitor. The device
designed for multiple servers installed in a rack mount Source:
which is easy to administer by the user. Modern KVM https://www.ugreen.co
switches usually use USB and HDMI connection while m.cn/products/2-in-1-
others are still using the combination of USB and VGA hdmi-usb-kvm-switch
connection.
9. Mouse
It is one common input device of a PC which is a hand-
fitting that use motion-detection by using optic to
decode its own physical two-dimensional movement
into the screen cursor. Most optical mouse use USB or
Wi-Fi connection.
10. Microphone
A microphone is an electronics devices that translates
sound vibrations into electronic signals which it sends
to a recording device like your computer or amplifier.
11. Printers
A printer is a computer output device that prints text
or images on paper. You can see this device usually in
an office.
12. Projector
A projector is an output device that may take pictures
generated by a laptop, desktop computer, smartphone
and other related devices to reproduce and enlarge
them by projection into a screen, wall, or another
surface.
13. Scanner
A scanner operates like a photocopier which converts
text and images into digital images instead of paper
reproduction.
14. Speakers
It is an output device of computers that convert
electrical signal into an audible signal. Users usually
integrate this device to their computer system set for
them to use in listening music.

15. Smart Card Readers
A smart card reader is a small device that can attach to
a laptop computer or desktop. Some are also attached
in the panel wall next to the door to secure it such as
in hotels. The device scans the chip embedded in the
card (like ID) to compare its data to the one saved in
the database. If the scanned data do not match, then Source: McGraw-Hill
the door will not open. Education
16. Touchscreens
A visual display unit that is sensitive to the bit of a
finger or a stylus. Nowadays it is employed in laptops,
ATM machines, retail location terminals, automobile
navigation and industrial controls. The bit of the
screen became wildly in style for smart phones and
tablets.
