Amplifier Card Including Performance Monitoring Capability for

Rolls-Royce Steering Gear Product Range
SV430-2/ SV570-2/ SV650-3/ SV850-3
Background Upgrade Installation

As you are aware from our Service Letter Ref. No. 37 RRDM
there is possibility of internal leakage on the SV range of
steering gears. As this can result in an increase in steering gear
response times, it is necessary to monitor the performance of
the steering gear. Rolls-Royce has therefore developed a
revised amplifier card.
The revised amplifier card will provide:
• The ability to continuously monitor the performance of
the steering gear
• The ability to detect electrical failure modes that could
potentially lead to loss of steering
If any emergent or actual failure mode is detected, the revised
amplifier card will cause an alarm to sound on the bridge. A
LED light on the card will inform you of the type of failure mode
detected.
Affected equipment
Steering Gear: Product Range SV430-2, SV570-2, SV650-3,
SV850-3
Rolls-Royce will contact you to make arrangements for delivery
of the revised amplifier card.
Upon receipt, the card must be installed without delay.
We estimate that the installation will take approximately 2-4
hours (per steering gear) for the vessel’s crew to complete,
depending on the steering gear configuration. This work does not
require Rolls-Royce Service Engineer support, as full set of
installation instructions will be provided in the upgrade kit. Please
ensure that the installation is done while the vessel is near a port
and without any need of steering.
IMPORTANT: Please note that the configuration of the
revised amplifier card is vessel specific. If you have multiple
vessels affected by this Service Letter, you must not
interchange amplifier cards between vessels.
When actions 1 to 5 described in this Service Letter are
completed, the requirement for testing as described in
Service Letter Ref. No. 37 RRDM, previously issued for
the same range of steering gears, is waived.
You must continue to complete actions mandated in
any other Service Letters applicable to your vessel.

The following page gives details of mandatory action to be taken. The continued operation of the identified steering gear units without the performance of the mandated
actions and required test procedures is at your own risk. Rolls-Royce reserves the right to rely upon the content of this Service Letter and any failure to perform these
actions in the event of any future incident arising as a direct or indirect result of the vessel owner, manager or crew not completing the mandatory actions. Rolls-Royce
reserves the right to issue a duty of care letter and to inform the appropriate classification society of the situation which may lead to a conditional class certificate being
issued in respect of the vessel. The measures described in this Service Letter and any parts and services provided are on the discretion of Rolls-Royce, and shall not
be deemed as an extension or change of any limitations on warranty or liability outside the explicit scope of this inspection/action.

4 To confirm and verify the successful installation of the revised amplifier After installing the Vessel Crew

document sent in the upgrade kit, to sg.pmscard@rolls-royce.com. without delay
