Biological Monitoring
What is Biological monitoring ?

• Biological monitoring is a method for assessing

human exposure to chemicals (or their effects or
their susceptibility) by measuring the chemicals,
their metabolites or reaction products in human
tissues or specimens, such as blood, urine, or hair

Biomonitoring
Metals Solvents:
Lead (Pb) Arsenic (As) S-Phenylmercapturic Acid
Mercury (Hg) Copper (Cu) Trans,trans-Muconic Acid
Cadmium (Cd) Tin (Sn) Methyl Hippuric Acid
Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Hippuric Acid
etc 2,5 Hexanadione
etc
Environmental Monitoring
Mengapa perlu dilakukan pemeriksaan/
pengukuran pajanan tempat kerja?
• Evaluating the degree of employee exposure to hazardous materials
on the job.
• Identification of the tasks or processes that could be sources of
peak exposures, evaluation of the impact of process changes and
control measures
• Environmental sampling can be used to clear an area for
reoccupancy, decide if a confined space is safe for entry, establish
background or usual concentrations, or warn of a peak release of a
hazardous product.
• Compliance with regulations.
What should be monitored?
• Hazards/contaminants identified in walkthrough survey or risk assessment
• Chemical agents
• Gases, vapors, solvents
• Aerosols: dust (particulates), mist, fumes
• Physical agents
• Noise
• Vibration
• Temperature (thermal stress)
• Ionizing & non-ionizing radiation
• Illumination
• Ergonomics
• Biological agents
• Microorganisms
What chemicals are hazardous?

• Substances can be considered hazardous not solely because of their
content (i.e. chemical ingredients) but because of the form or way in
which they are used at the workplace.
Monitoring
• Monitoring is a continuous program of observation, measurement,
and judgment.
• It requires an awareness of the presence of potential health hazards
as processes undergo change, and constant assessment of the
adequacy of the control measures in place.
• Monitoring is more than simply sampling the air to which an
employee is exposed or examining the medical status of that
employee.
• Included in the process are both personal and environmental
monitoring, performed during a given operation where hazardous
materials may be released, and follow-up biological and medical
monitoring of the employees involved in that process.
