Water Logging problem in Bamnertek, Uttara, Dhaka

1. What are the main factors contributing to Water Logging problem in the
Bamnertek area of Uttara Sector 10, Dhaka?

 Poor drainage system due to new infrastructures


 Water logging due to unplanned structure

2. what influenced urban development in that area?

 For low cost of land in that area compared to other regions in


uttara ,urbanization happened frequently in that area in 15 to 20 years

4. How have past flood events impacted the community and its infrastructure?

 In 1988 and 1998 major flood happened in Bangladesh.These events


affected dangerously in that area
 In every Monsoon, water logging is maximum, so vehicles cannot move
properly , polluted water enters through houses and people cannot find any
dry place to walk
 Ayesha Siddiqa, a Bamnartek resident who is currently pregnant, stated that
she recently fell from an auto-rickshaw and was severely injured while on
her way to see a doctor. Many of the residents of the area shared similar
ordeals.
 The localities become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, making residents
vulnerable to dengue fever.
 Though a large number of residents live in these areas, there are no
sufficient street lights along the roads. As a result, people are afraid to step
outside after dark.

5. To what extent do natural factors such as topography, drainage patterns, and


water bodies contribute to the Water Logging problem in Bamnertek,?"

 The land area of that region is depressed


 Filling up of the ‘Khidir khal’ in that area,so there’s no enough space to
dispose runoffs due to rain water
 The Khidir Khal of 8 km long originates from the Turag river and joins the
Turag river through Ranabola, Bamnartek, Fulbaria, Uttara No. 12 Sector
Khalpar, Dalipara, Baunia, Mirpur Alokdi of Harirampur Union.

6. What is the level of awareness and preparedness among the residents of


Bamnertek regarding flood risks?

 Low level of preparedness for low economical conditions of the citizens

7. What role do local governance play in mitigating Water Logging problem in


Bamnertek?

 At one time Khidir Canal was under the jurisdiction of Union Parishad, but
recently the canal has come under DNCC due to the addition of 18 new
wards of Dhaka North City Corporation. But the canal is owned by Dhaka
WASA. It is also their responsibility to take care of it. But even in the last
three years, they did not consider the necessity of cleaning the garbage of
this canal.
