What’s New

A conditional sentence is a type of sentence that states a condition and the

outcome of that condition occurring. Conditional sentences are made up of a dependent
clause and an independent clause joined to express said condition.

Before we proceed, let’s review the types of clause: Independent clause is a

group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought while
dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not
express a complete thought.

(S) (V)
Examples: She planted various types of cacti during the lockdown. (independent clause)
(S) (V)
When she planted cacti (dependent clause)

Both sentences have subjects and verbs BUT the latter does not express a complete
thought.

What’s In

Forms of Conditionals
Conditional sentences have two clauses: a condition (if...) and a result. It contains two
clauses: the dependent clause expressing the condition and the main clause expressing the
consequence.

1. First Conditional
a. used to express a possible condition and its result in the future. Used to refer to the
present or future where the situation is real. The ‘if’ part of the sentence contains a possible
action or situation, and the ‘will/won’t’ part of the sentence contains the result.

The form is If + present + will + verb.

dependent clause (condition) main clause (result)

Example: If you make the right decision, you will not regret later.
If she marries him, she will be a billionaire.
b. We use the first conditional when we are talking about possibilities immediately after the
present moment.
(Possibility) (Present condition)
Example: You’ll be late for work / if you don’t leave now.
c. We also use the first conditional when we are imagining and talking about possibilities a
long time in the future.
Example: Here, a child imagines life as an adult:
(Condition) (Possibility)
If I make a lot of money, I’ll live in a big house.
d. We can use may/might for the result, to say that the result is only possible, not certain.
(condition) (possible result)
Example: If I send this package today, it might reach you next month.
e. We can use should for the result, to say that the result is probable but not certain.

(condition) ( result)
Example: If I start to exercise today, I should lose weight at the end of the month.

f. We can use an imperative for the result, to give an instruction or advice.

(condition) (instruction/advice)
Example: Here’s my card – if you need any help, give me a ring.

I would answer all of your questions easily if I had Einstein’s brain.

true.

real so the action of eradicating the virus is impossible)

b. We can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because

What’s In

4. Zero Conditional- it is used to make statements about the real world, and often refers
to general truths, such as scientific facts. In these sentences, the time is now or
always and the situation is real and possible.

If + simple present+ simple present

Example:

If clause(condition) Main clause(result)

If you freeze water, it becomes a solid.

Plants die if they don't get enough water.

As in all conditional sentences, the arrangement of the clauses is not fixed. You may have
to rearrange the pronouns and adjust punctuation when you change the order of the
clauses, but the meaning is alike. In zero conditional sentences, you can change "if" with
"when", because both express general truths. The meaning will be unchanged.

Example:

If it rains, the grass gets wet. OR The grass gets wet if it rains.

When it rains, the grass gets wet. OR The grass gets wet when it rains.
