Members:
Ali, Norhanie
Jumadiao, Elthon
Montilla, Mykaella A.
Learning Objectives:
Ice at temperature 𝑡𝑖𝑖𝑐𝑒 <0°𝐶 and mass 𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑒 is added to a hot solution of temperature 𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑛 and
mass 𝑚𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑛. The ice is allowed to completely melt and establish thermal equilibrium with water.
•Measure the equilibrium temperature between two substances (ice and unknown
solution)
•Determine the specific heat of an unknown solution
•Using the specific heat of the unknown solution, determine the energy needed to change
the temperature of the solution to a known ∆𝑡.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS NEEDED
•Thermometer
•Calorimeter
•Beakers (2), 150-mL
•Triple-beam balance
•Hot plate
•Ice, 50 mL
•Unknown solution, 50 mL
