1. INTRODUCTION
The AKZX coding system has been adopted by Eskom as the codification standard applicable for the
codification of plant, system, equipment, component and structures at Duvha, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla and
Tutuka Power Stations
AKZX is based on the AKZ (analagen kenn zeichnung) and KKS (kraftwerk kennzeichen system) Plant
Classification Systems procedures. It is called AKZX because it is a combination of two (2) Plant coding
Systems. The first part of the code is an AKZ Coding System and the second Part is a KKS Coding
System.
It is necessary to have uniform classification system in all parts of the plant which permits individual
items and sections to be clearly designated for the operation of the station

2. SUPPORTING CLAUSES

2.1 SCOPE
This standard specifies the rules and guidelines that shall be followed in AKZX identification of plants,
systems, equipment, components and structures at Duvha, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla and Tutuka Power
Stations. It outlines the specifications for identification in different engineering disciplines (i.e.
mechanical, electrical, civil and control & instrumentation).

2.1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to establish a standardized AKZX coding rules for identification of
plant, systems, equipment and components in power plants.

2.1.2 Applicability
This document shall apply to all plant, systems, equipment, components and structures at Duvha, Kriel,
Lethabo, Matla and Tutuka power stations that will require plant coding and labelling. It includes the
existing plant as well as modifications and refurbishments.
All the coding rules in this document shall be applicable to all AKZX coded power stations unless
otherwise stated.

3. AKZX CODING SYSTEM

3.1 CODING REQUIREMENTS

In the design, construction and operation of any technical installation it is necessary to have a system of
classification which permits the individual items and sections of the plant to be clearly designated in all
drawings and literature and for operation of the station.
Best configuration management practices require the implementation of a codification system that meets
the following requirements:
 Codes created must be unique and the designation of an item may only appear once in the whole
plant.
 Should be easy to remember.
 Built up in a uniform manner for each unit, system or section of the power station.
 It should be possible to give similar items in different power stations the same designation. This is
achieved by the introduction of a business unit number when the codification information is integrated
between systems.
 It should be generally applicable.
 Should be flexible, since the functional area boundaries may vary from case to case, and it should be
possible to adjust to suit requirements.
 Once a code is assigned, it cannot be changed or re-used. Legacy codes should also not be deleted
as it is required for configuration auditing practices to have a full history of plant codification over the
plant asset lifecycle. ECM process caters for changes that need to be done on the plant and on
technical documentation, and including changing codes.

3.2 SCOPE OF AKZX CODING

The AKZX code is based upon the translated article "Classification system for plant and equipment in
thermal power stations" by Dr H Anders , Mr. P Freymeyer and Mr. H Hotes, in the Veereinigung
Deutscher Electrisitatswerke - VDEW publication Electrizitatasswirtschaft N0.6, 17 March 1969,pp 181-
192.
The AKZX codes consist of alpha letters (A) and numeric(s) (N). The code is divided into 4 (1-4)
Breakdown Levels (BDL) in the process related code. The individual BDL are differently formatted. They
consist of classifying and numbering code element. The alpha code elements C2, C4 and B1, B2 have a
classifying function. The code elements C1, C3, U and BN have a numbering function.

The system code consists of function classification elements C2 and C3.

The first classification element (C2) contains two alphabetic characters indicating plant groups and sub
groups.
It is a broad identification of the major plant involved:
 Letters A to M (excluding “I”) refer to electrical and instrumentation and control equipment
 Letters N to W (excluding Q and T) refer to mechanical plant
 Letter T refers to operating maintenance general
 Letter X refers to primary energy and waste management
 I, Y and Z refers to civil works.

The second alphanumeric letter provides a more precise identification at sub-system level.
The system code list is shown in Table 3 and sub system list is indicated on the key part [5]

The second classification element (C3) provides a more precise identification. It contains two numeric
characters to identify subgroups, parallel streams and section of the plant defined by C2. This portion of
the code is used to identify sub-groups and parallel streams.
NOTE: In the case of electrical boards ONLY, this section will contain THREE Numerical numbers.
C3 numbering does not have to be sequential.
C3 numbering is governed by the following principles
 Numbering may be consecutive or grouping
 Numbering need not be continuous
 Numbering conventions, once established, may not be altered, not even in the event of changes
made in the progress of planning. ECM process caters for changes that need to be done on the plant
and on technical documentation, and including changing codes.
 The direction of numbering coincides as a rule with that of flow
 C3 numbering is governed by priorities (e.g. run pipe and branch pipe) or by a defined direction of
view (e.g. from left to right, from bottom to top)

Equipment code numbering shall follow specific counting rules for particular equipment type groups. For
more general applications, a pure sequential allocation of numbers will take place. The exceptions to this
are Valves, Measuring Circuits and Electrical
When coding different types of valves, dampers including actuators etc., code and numbering for U shall

3.2.4 Breakdown Level 4: Component Code

The AKZ code does not have the facility to identify components at a lower level. For example, a drive
unit 'D001' comprises of a motor (electrical component), a gearbox, pump unit and couplings
(mechanical components). To identify these components, which is essential for proper maintenance, 3rd
level KKS codes were introduced as an addition to the conventional AKZ coding system to provide this
level of coding granularity that is required.

NOTE: Components that are deemed to be fully coded at AKZ level only do not need the introduction of
the BDL4 component level.
E.g. 01RL80S111 (Main feed water isolating valve) are already coded sufficiently as it does not consist
of any lower level components that need to be identified for maintenance purposes,
The component code subdivides equipment units into separate components, signals or signal
applications. The component code consists of component classification B1, B2 and numbering element
BN.
The following coding letters and designations of the main groups B1 are given in the component key in
the key part:
- Electrical component
K Mechanical unit components (production)
M Mechanical unit components (auxiliary)
Q Instrumentation and control component (non-electrical)
X Signal origin
Y Signal application
Z Gated signal

The associated designations for subgroup B2 are given in the applicable Key part (Component Key). B1

The classification element C2 classifies the subdivision of installation units e.g Cubicles, Consoles,
Cabinets and Panels. It shall be coded as per [5]
The classifying part of the point of installation code identifies hardware facilities such as switchgear,
electronic equipment cabinets and control consoles. The classification element C2 is identical for both
process-related and point of installation identification. Allocation of the second letter on the classification
element C2 is governed by the individual plant concept, i.e. by aspects such as auxiliary power system
configuration, hardwired control and instrumentation in conventional technology or combined cabinets or
programmable logic systems. Generally valid rules cannot be established.
Classification element C3 will follow the number of circuit numbering
