1. INTRODUCTION
The AKZX coding system has been adopted by Eskom as the codification standard applicable for the
codification of plant, system, equipment, component and structures at Duvha, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla and
Tutuka Power Stations
AKZX is based on the AKZ (analagen kenn zeichnung) and KKS (kraftwerk kennzeichen system) Plant
Classification Systems procedures. It is called AKZX because it is a combination of two (2) Plant coding
Systems. The first part of the code is an AKZ Coding System and the second Part is a KKS Coding
System.
It is necessary to have uniform classification system in all parts of the plant which permits individual
items and sections to be clearly designated for the operation of the station
2. SUPPORTING CLAUSES
2.1 SCOPE
This standard specifies the rules and guidelines that shall be followed in AKZX identification of plants,
systems, equipment, components and structures at Duvha, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla and Tutuka Power
Stations. It outlines the specifications for identification in different engineering disciplines (i.e.
mechanical, electrical, civil and control & instrumentation).
2.1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to establish a standardized AKZX coding rules for identification of
plant, systems, equipment and components in power plants.
2.1.2 Applicability
This document shall apply to all plant, systems, equipment, components and structures at Duvha, Kriel,
Lethabo, Matla and Tutuka power stations that will require plant coding and labelling. It includes the
existing plant as well as modifications and refurbishments.
All the coding rules in this document shall be applicable to all AKZX coded power stations unless
otherwise stated.

2.3 DEFINITIONS
Definition Description
AKZX System A method of physical and electronic plant equipment position
identification for Configuration Management purposes and to
facilitate Engineering Processes (Maintenance, Operating, Change
etc.)
AKZX Code The AKZX Code is developed in terms of generic and logical plant
breakdown structures i.e. Plant, System, Sub-system, Equipment and
Component.
AKZ The AKZ Code is developed in terms of generic and logical plant
breakdown structures i.e. Plant, System, Sub-system and Equipment.
AKZX Description The AKZX Description is logical and descriptive text reflecting the
constitution of the AKZX Code in terms of Plant, System, Sub-
system, Function and Component.
Configuration management Is a discipline applying technical and administrative direction
and surveillance to, defining the Cl, identifying the Cl, controlling
changes to Cl and recording and reporting change status
accounting
Engineering Change Any permanent or temporary change, deletion or addition to any
system, equipment, structure including permanent c h a n g e s to
oper at ing /protection/control set points, software and technical
documentation which will result in any deviation from the
established Design Base. This includes the replacement of
system, structure or components with equivalent components of a
different make or type.

In the design, construction and operation of any technical installation it is necessary to have a system of
classification which permits the individual items and sections of the plant to be clearly designated in all
drawings and literature and for operation of the station.
Best configuration management practices require the implementation of a codification system that meets
the following requirements:
Codes created must be unique and the designation of an item may only appear once in the whole
plant.
Should be easy to remember.
Built up in a uniform manner for each unit, system or section of the power station.
It should be possible to give similar items in different power stations the same designation. This is
achieved by the introduction of a business unit number when the codification information is integrated
between systems.
It should be generally applicable.
Should be flexible, since the functional area boundaries may vary from case to case, and it should be
possible to adjust to suit requirements.
Once a code is assigned, it cannot be changed or re-used. Legacy codes should also not be deleted
as it is required for configuration auditing practices to have a full history of plant codification over the
plant asset lifecycle. ECM process caters for changes that need to be done on the plant and on
technical documentation, and including changing codes.
The AKZX code is based upon the translated article "Classification system for plant and equipment in
thermal power stations" by Dr H Anders , Mr. P Freymeyer and Mr. H Hotes, in the Veereinigung
Deutscher Electrisitatswerke - VDEW publication Electrizitatasswirtschaft N0.6, 17 March 1969,pp 181-
192.
The AKZX codes consist of alpha letters (A) and numeric(s) (N). The code is divided into 4 (1-4)
Breakdown Levels (BDL) in the process related code. The individual BDL are differently formatted. They
consist of classifying and numbering code element. The alpha code elements C2, C4 and B1, B2 have a
classifying function. The code elements C1, C3, U and BN have a numbering function.

The symbol "pin with empty head" is used to identify the limits of functions and
sub-functions
Symbol "pin with full head" is used to identify the limits of piping sections. A
typical implementation is the change of the following pipe subsystem: BN.

The second classification element (C3) provides a more precise identification. It contains two numeric
characters to identify subgroups, parallel streams and section of the plant defined by C2. This portion of
the code is used to identify sub-groups and parallel streams.
NOTE: In the case of electrical boards ONLY, this section will contain THREE Numerical numbers.
C3 numbering does not have to be sequential.
C3 numbering is governed by the following principles
Numbering may be consecutive or grouping
Numbering need not be continuous
Numbering conventions, once established, may not be altered, not even in the event of changes
made in the progress of planning. ECM process caters for changes that need to be done on the plant
and on technical documentation, and including changing codes.
The direction of numbering coincides as a rule with that of flow
C3 numbering is governed by priorities (e.g. run pipe and branch pipe) or by a defined direction of
view (e.g. from left to right, from bottom to top)

The numbering element U contains three numeric characters which is a unique number allocated to the
same type of equipment within a plant sub-group (C3). It represents numbering of mechanical
equipment, electrical, control and instrumentation.
Equipment code numbering shall follow specific counting rules for particular equipment type groups. For
more general applications, a pure sequential allocation of numbers will take place. The exceptions to this
are Valves, Measuring Circuits and Electrical
When coding different types of valves, dampers including actuators etc., code and numbering for U shall

For all C&I cables the source will be the C&I point of signal origin (source) which is the field.
For all the C&I power cables the source will be the C&I power distribution panel.
C&I Network cable codification will indicate both source and destination with the same code sequence
on both ends.
Different code configurations are used to code relevant C&I cables based on source description.
Cable code to be used when source of cable is a field device. The cable code consists of the
following elements:
CABLE NUMBER
O1 O2 O3
NN AANNANNN NNNN

7. IDENTIFICATION OF LOCATION
The location designation identifies structures, floors rooms and fire areas in order to provide unique
addressing of physical location, section and items of equipment in power plants. Location identification
applies to all engineering discipline including civil, mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation
engineering.
The classification element C1 contains two numeric characters denoting the unit number or geographical
location.

The data character C2 shall classify the subdivisions of structure according to the function key specified
by the AKZX key part. The coding designation of the first letter on the data character from the function
key is as follows
I Structure
Y Civil Works
Z Civil Works
The second letter on the data character C2 shall be taken from applicable function key.
Room code shall identify physically separated and logically defined rooms/areas in structures and in
open areas
Code position A (C3) shall identify rooms and fire areas. The identification letters and designations for
room codes are:
R Room
S Fire areas
Note: NNN shall be used in numbering rooms and fire areas in each floor. Numbering shall start from
001 with increment in unit number
