Soundness Test

Durability of stone aggregates wrt chemicals

4.75mm-10mm = 300g = 4mm sieve check

10-20 = 1000g .. 10-12.25 = 33%, 12.25-20 = 67% = 8mm sieve check

20-40mm = 1500g..20-25 = 33%, 25-50 = 67% = 16mm sieve check

40-63g = 3000g.. 40-50 = 50%, 50-63 = 50% = 31.5mm sieve check

>63mm = each 20 mm = 3000g

Prepare one solution .. Na2SO4 or MgSO4 can be anhydrous (420, 400g respectively) or
crystalline(1300 or 1600g respectively)

420g Na2SO4 anhydrous in 1L water. It should be a slightly white coloured solution

Water 15mm above top of aggregate, 27 degree celcius, 18 hours, for 5 cycles or less

Drain for 15 minutes

Oven dry 105-110 degree celcius. Take out every 4 hour, and weight and put back. When change
becomes 1g or less stop, takes about 16-18 hours.

Back in Na2SO4

5 cycles

8mm sieve

Oven dry

Max 12% loss for Na2SO4 and 16% for MgSO4
