2. DANGERS and CARES:

a. Drivers COM 20 are modules BDM (EN 61800-3). These drivers shall be embedded in
more complex industrial equipments by qualified operators. They are designed for a
restricted distribution class. It is forbidden the employment by unprofessional users.
b. The drivers (IP20) shall be installed inside protective enclosures complied with specific
application standards.
c. It is forbidden the employment in the presence of gas or flammable vapours.
d. The machine shall be equipped by external security systems that shall not be based
on driver’s proper functioning. For example, the disable input shall not be used in
security functions.
e. Burn danger: in certain working conditions the heat sink temperature can reach 90°C,
therefore, before handling the driver, it is required to wait for some minutes afterwards
power-off.
f. Electric shock danger: wait at least for one minute before operating on the device, in
order to allow the electrolytic capacitor discharge. The connectors plug in and the dip-
switch current and mode set-up shall be done in equipment power-off state.

3. ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY:
The driver, the cables and the motor are electromagnetic interference sources (EMI). In compliance
with the directive CEE 89/336 and with the relative product standard (EN 61800-3) it is required to
follow the installation pattern (paragraph 7) that highlines:
• The driver shall be installed inside a shielded enclosure.
• A shielded cable shall connect the driver to the motor. The shield shall be grounded on the
driver case and on the motor (shortest path).
• It is required to place a line filter (FINMOTOR: FIN 40.005.F or equivalent) nearby the driver. It
is also possible another solution: only one filter at the power supply input. The wiring shall be
done avoiding coupling between power and signal cables.
• It is required a double insulation transformer.
• The driver grounding shall be as short as possibile.
Furthermore a complete equipment test is required.

Each input (Start, Dir, Speed) is optocoupled

and isolated from the others. Therefore they
can be drived by an output NPN or PNP. The

• To paragraph 4 you can look the location of dip switch " current set-up". Bit 4 serves in order to
set up the 40% or 60% automatic current reduction when thre motor is stopped (TAB 2). It is
better to hold it ON (OFF for vertical loads). The automatic reduction current serves in order to
reduce the medium temperature of the motor and of the driver. Bit 2,3,4 serves in order to set up
the nominal motor current (TAB.1). The maximum current does not have to be set up if not
necessary in order to move the load: useless overheating of the motor and the drive would be
produced and resonances could be provoked ( vibrations with loss of steps). Sufficient current for
the operation is advised to set up one, with safety margins for eventual hardening. Increasing the
speed, the motor's heat increases. Therefore the medium temperatures of the motor depends
on the current set up, on the operating cycle and on the cooling conditions.
• The heat sink of the drive (houses) is sufficient for the maximum current (10 A) with the maximum
ambient temperature of 45 °C and with a cycle "not too much onerous". It is advisable to verify
the motor-driver temperature in automatic cycle after approximately 30 min. An overtemperature
alarm is active if the temperature of the case exceeds 90 °C. In this case there is a burn risk; it is
therefore necessary to install the driver inside of an enclosure. If the case temperature exceeds
60 ° C, the fan cooler is needed . (Or choose a ventilated model: COM20V. ...)

6. DIAGNOSTICA

LED power ON Must be ON. If off, the voltage is insufficient.

LED FAULT Must be OFF It is on if there is a short circuit (between phases or
between phase and earth), or overheating. (There is short circuit if it
turns ON when the driver is cold.)
LED Freq At low Frequency LED flashes, at high frequency it is always on.
LED DIR The LED lights up when the DIR input level is low or disconnected.
LED Disable Not used in this application
