GENE KIM
FROM YOUR COLLEGE & MISSIONS PASTOR GKIM@EASTMONT.ORG
“Because my Momma told me so.” Remember as a kid how that statement was a sufficient explanation for
why something was the way it was? Whether it was something related to science, history, or religion, as
kids we believed a thing to be true simply because our parents told us so.

Now that didn’t last very long because as we grew up, we began questioning things. By the time we were
teenagers, we felt like we knew pretty much everything there was to know. But what would have
happened if we never moved passed the things we heard as a kid? What if we still believed that rain was
God’s tears and that thunder and lightning were angels bowling in heaven? It’s sweet in a way, but it can
also be detrimental, especially when it comes to matters of our faith.

Paul writes in Galatians 1:11 that the gospel he preaches was “not man’s gospel.” He continues that he
“did not receive it from any man, or was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ”
(v.12). In other words, he wasn’t just sharing with them something that somebody told him or that he
learned in a book, but he knew it for himself because he heard it straight from God.

Sometimes I worry about people in our churches because there’s a tendency to know things about God
without really knowing God. That’s a big difference. If all we’re interested in is learning without
experiencing, we’re missing the point. Church is less about information and more about transformation.
Don’t be the person who believes because you’re told about Jesus; believe because you really know Him.
