Cantilever Beam Design

Given:

● Clear span = 4.5 m

● Live load = 13 kN/m
● Material: M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel
● Monolithic with a reinforced concrete column 300 mm wide by 600 mm deep at the
junction of the column and beam

Design steps:

1. Calculate the factored load

The factored load is the sum of the dead load and the live load, multiplied by a load factor of
1.5.

Factored load = (Dead load + Live load) * 1.5

The dead load of the beam can be calculated using the following equation:

Dead load = Unit weight of concrete * Volume of beam

Assuming a unit weight of concrete of 25 kN/m³, the dead load of the beam is:

Dead load = 25 kN/m³ * 0.3 m * b

where b is the width of the beam.

The total factored load is then:

Factored load = (25 kN/m³ * 0.3 m * b + 13 kN/m) * 1.5

2. Calculate the design moment

The design moment is the maximum moment that the beam will experience under the factored
load. For a cantilever beam with a uniformly distributed load, the design moment is given by the
following equation:

Design moment = (Factored load * Span^2) / 8

Substituting the given values, we get:

Design moment = (33.75 kN/m * 4.5 m^2) / 8 = 60.4125 kNm

3. Calculate the required section modulus

The required section modulus is given by the following equation:

Required section modulus = Design moment / Allowable bending stress

The allowable bending stress for M20 concrete is 10.5 N/mm².

Substituting the given values, we get:

Required section modulus = 60.4125 kNm / 10.5 N/mm² = 5753.12 cm³

4. Select a beam section

The beam section must have a section modulus greater than or equal to the required section
modulus.

A suitable beam section for this application is a 300 mm wide by 600 mm deep beam. This
section has a section modulus of 7200 cm³, which is greater than the required section modulus
of 5753.12 cm³.

5. Design the reinforcement

The reinforcement in the beam must be designed to resist the design moment.
Assuming a concrete cover of 25 mm, the effective depth of the beam is 550 mm.

The area of steel required is given by the following equation:

Area of steel required = Design moment / (Lever arm of steel *

Allowable stress of steel)

The lever arm of steel is equal to the effective depth of the beam minus the concrete cover, or
525 mm.

The allowable stress of steel for Fe 415 steel is 415 N/mm².

Substituting the given values, we get:

Area of steel required = 60.4125 kNm / (525 mm * 415 N/mm²) = 276.9

mm²

This area of steel can be provided by four 12 mm diameter bars.

Conclusion

A suitable cantilever beam for the given application is a 300 mm wide by 600 mm deep beam,
reinforced with four 12 mm diameter bars.

Note: This is just a preliminary design. A more detailed design should be performed by a
qualified engineer, taking into account all of the relevant factors, such as the type of building, the
loads on the beam, and the local building codes.
