Supplemental Instructions: Shared Coordinates

There are (2) types of coordinates systems used in Revit. One is an internal or project coordinate system,
the other is a shared or survey coordinate system. The internal system is analogus to the 0,0,0 cartisian
coordinate system in CAD. The shared system is analogus to a survey bench mark that has a Northing
and Easting and well as a height above sea level associates with it.

All of the architectural models that are currently on the SharePoint website under the active files now
have a shared coordiante system associated with them. All other models on the project will need to
aquire the shared coordiante system from their respective architecture models. After you have inserted
the architectural model into your model and have aligned it vertically and horizontally please follow the
instruction below:

Step 1:

Go to the “Manage” tab and select “Coordinates” and then “Aquire Coordinates”
Step 2:

Hover over the linked architectural model and left click to select. Syncronize to central.
Step 3:

Test the posistion. TEMPORARILY change the Orientation to “True North.” The building should rotate to
the buildings true position on the site. Be sure to change back.
Step 4:

Test the elevation. TEMPORARILY change the Elevation Base from “Project Base Point” to “Survey
Point”. The building should rotate to the buildings true position on the site. Be sure to change back.
Life after you have aquired the shared Coordinates

Once you have aquired the shared coordiante system from the architectural model, you can NEVER
move the linked archtiectrual model or any other linked model that is part of the shared coordiante
system. The only place the architectrual models should be moved is in the master Revit site model and
that should only be done by . If the archtiectural models move relative to the site, they will
let the entire team know.

So if you notice that the archtectural model has shifted after you have aquired the coordiantes, how do
you get your building to align? You must move or re-position your model to align with the linked
architectural model. Using levels or grids as a reference, go to the “Manage” tab, select the “Position”
pull down and use the “Relocate Project” to move your model vertically or laterally. If the building has
rotated, you need to use the “Rotate Project” command.
