wastewater treatment, also called sewage treatment, the removal of

impurities from wastewater, or sewage, before it reaches aquifers or natural

bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans
Any distinction between clean water and dirty water depends on the type and
concentration of pollutants found in the water as well as on its intended usage
because pure water cannot be found in nature (i.e., outside of chemical
laboratories). In general, water is contaminated when it has too many
contaminants for it to be suitable for activities like drinking, swimming, or
fishing. Even though environmental factors have an impact on water quality,
the term "pollution" typically indicates that human action is the cause of the
contamination. Thus, wastewater treatment is a key component of water
pollution control. Water pollution is generally produced by the drainage of
contaminated wastewater into surface water or groundwater.

Types of sewage
There are three types of wastewater, or sewage: domestic sewage, industrial sewage,
and storm sewage. Domestic sewage carries used water from houses and apartments; it
is also called sanitary sewage. Industrial sewages are used water from manufacturing or
chemical processes. Storm sewage, or storm water, is runoff from precipitation that is
collected in a system of pipes or open channels.
