Senior Lecturer in Film and Media


Starting salary £46,974 per annum
The Faculty of Business and Creative Industries at the University of South Wales has a long
established and successful group of film and media-related courses. The Faculty is home to Film
and TV School Wales, the largest HE provider of screen industries education in Wales. This post
represents an opportunity for the Faculty to build further its expertise in the specific area of film
and screen content production, and to better engage with the rapidly shifting educational
contexts of students and training needs of the screen industries in Wales and across the UK.

Based at our Atrium campus, Cardiff, this role will utilize your range of production skills and
knowledge of film and media. You will be working within a team of experienced staff to deliver a
high quality film-based education that combines both theory and practice. We are actively
seeking staff with industry and teaching experience in directing and contemporary production
practices, and an ability to lead the MA Film (Directing) Pathway and to teach across BA Film.

Reporting to the Head of Subject, Film & TV, this Senior Lecturer role requires a proactive
individual with recent industry-focused expertise and contacts. Applicants should be skilled in
leadership and collaborative working, and understand, and be committed to, improving student
engagement and experience.

Job purpose

As a Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at the University of South Wales, you will be expected
to:
• Contribute to achieving the University’s vision, underpinned by offering exceptional
learning experiences, using a scholarly approach, applied research and innovative delivery
and assessment models, and so provide an excellent student experience.
• Create interest and enthusiasm in students, inspire them to learn and be an exemplary role
model.
• Lead the MA Film (Directing) Pathway and teach and lead a range of modules relating to
the current and future delivery of Film and Media at USW.
• Contribute effectively to teaching and research in the subject area and to ensuring that
students who study Film at USW enjoy the best possible experience.
• Play a key role in devising curriculum, connecting with prospective industry partners and
completing all necessary Quality Assurances
• Support and enhance the reputation of the subject area.
• Undertake any additional responsibilities as reasonably requested by Faculty management
to continue the University’s commitment to excellence and professionalism.

Key responsibilities

Student Experience
1. Promote and implement initiatives, working practices and positive working
relationships that enhance the student experience.
2. Recognising the critical nature of the National Student Survey (and other league
tables), to demonstrate leadership and ownership of steps taken to improve these
activities, and to champion the work undertaken at individual and course level.

3. Contribute to the wider student experience, e.g. participation in recruitment events,
involvement in employability initiatives.

Learning and Teaching


4. Develop and deliver high-quality material and activity that meet the learning needs of
students and defined learning objectives aligned with the USW Curriculum Design
Principles embracing active learning and inclusion by design.
5. Demonstrate good practice in teaching, learning and assessment through the
development and use of a wide range of learning resources and appropriate innovative
pedagogic practice and to champion evidence based innovation in course teams.
6. Ensure that teaching is informed by contemporary and current research in the relevant
field and that students are engaged in debate, critical discourse and rational thinking.
7. Reflect critically on own teaching, learning and assessment practice, identify and
implement improvements, inspiring others to do so.
8. Identify appropriate and effective assessment instruments and criteria, and engage
actively with the quality monitoring and enhancement processes.
9. Develop ideas for generating income and promoting the subject, to include the use of
internal/external networks to contribute to the profile of the subject and the wider
student experience.
10. Contribute to the planning, design and development of programmes and short courses
and the curriculum contained within those programmes.

Research and Scholarship

11. Incorporate subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship as part of an integrated
approach to academic practice.
12. Undertake scholarly activity and relevant professional development to ensure currency
of knowledge to enhance the learning experience for students and identify ways of
disseminating and applying the scholarship to demonstrate academic and professional
currency.
13. Engage in continuing professional development in relation to your academic and
professional practice.

Academic Citizenship and Leadership


14. Reflect critically on your practice and the development of your own teaching and
learning skills and to support others in their academic and professional development.
15. Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement, putting
forward ideas and proposals for change.
16. Undertake academic leadership, supporting others in the fulfilment of their
responsibilities, such as supervision of student projects, postgraduate students,
personal academic coaching.
17. Work effectively as a team member and where appropriate mentor, coordinate or
supervise colleagues.
18. Contribute to the strategic direction of the subject/learning and teaching strategies and
the viability of the course/provision.

19. Contribute to committees and working groups and act as an exemplary ambassador for
Schools, Faculties and the University, as appropriate.
20. Undertake course leadership as required as outlined in the module/course leader
descriptors and other University guidance.

Person Specification

To be able to undertake this role effectively you will need the key attributes and skills
outlined below. When completing your application ensure you demonstrate how you
meet these criteria.

1 A Masters degree in an appropriate subject as a minimum, or PhD ideally.


Or
If you are from a professional practice background and do not have a Masters degree,
you will need to have a good honours degree and appropriate professional practice
and/or membership, with an expectation of attaining a level 7 qualification within a
reasonable timeframe.*

2 A recognised HE teaching qualification or recognition by the HEA as a Fellow as a


minimum. If you do not have either you will need to undertake the internal
PGCLTHE/HEA scheme as appropriate.*

3 Active membership of a relevant professional body.

4 A commitment to the University’s core values and mission.*

5 An in depth level of knowledge of your subject area and ability to inspire students
through teaching and provision of academic support, including academic coaching.*

6 Being proactive, identifying where improvements can be made to the academic


provision, and acting on those.*

7 An enthusiasm and commitment to engage a range of students through different


pedagogic practice and learning resources, such as digital technologies, problem-based
learning, dialogic teaching and other methods based on the latest sound evidence of
cutting edge practice. *

8 Experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management in the HE


environment.

9 Evidence of contemporary practice in your relevant subject area and maintaining


currency.*

Additionally you will need to:


Be willing to undertake activities requiring academic staff expertise in the evening and at
weekends when necessary.

Be willing to travel abroad to undertake academic and related activities.
