Braids or Ties for Earflaps
There are two options to finish off an earflap hat, ties or braids. Both will give you a
cute finished hat, try making both on different hats to see which one you like
better.

Braids: Start by joining the contrasting color at the back of the hat and sc all the
way around, join and FO. Next cut your yarn to make the braids. You will need 8
strands of each color, cut about 3 times as long as you want the braids to be.
Take 4 strands of each color and use a large crochet hook to pull them through the
bottom edge of the earflap. Pull half of the length of yarn through and tie. You
should now have 8 strands of each color. Braid and tie a knot a the end. Make the
second braid the same way, be careful to make it the same length as the first.
Trim ends.

Ties: Join yarn at the back of the hat .

-Ch 1 then, Sc in each stitch around to the bottom tip of the earflap. ch 42.
-hdc into the second ch from the hook then hdc in each ch back up to the earflap.
-Sc in the same stitch where you left off and then sc around to the second earflap.
-Repeat the same chain and hdc to create the second tie.
-Sc back around to where you joined and sl st into the first sc. FO
*You can decrease the length of your ties by not chaining all the way to 42 but, I
like longer length so I can actually tie them in a bow. You may prefer a shorter
length on your hat. You can also SC on the way back up to make them thinner.

You should now have: 1 Hat body, 1 Antenna, 2 Ears and 3 Eyes. Stuff eyes with
fiberfill and whip stitch onto the hat just above the color change. Sew the antenna
on above the middle eye and the ears onto either side of the hat. For a cleaner
look, only sew through the back layer of the ears.

Enjoy your cool new hat! I am always an e-mail away if you have any questions:
