5.2. Calibrating
When levelling the carrier lengthwise and sideways into horizontal position, place a spirit level on the
boom swing sensor box.
The carrier lengthwise sensor can now be calibrated by typing
1
The carrier sideways sensor is calibrated separately for each boom. Select boom by typing I, II, or
III, and calibrate the sideways sensor by typing
3
Calibrate the sideways sensor for each boom.
If the sideways position of the booms as measured from the top of the sensor box differs more than
0.1° move the carrier into horizontal position separately for each boom before calibrating.
Draw a line at the boom position on the ground surface. The line should be as long as the boom, and
parallel with the carrier. Refer to Fig. 2.
• Draw two long straight lines with the aid of, for instance, a string that is pulled straight along the
sides of the tyres at hub height.
• Measure two points on both lines at distances x and y from the front wheel hubs.
• Measure the distances l and m, and mark their centre points on the ground surface (divide the
measurements by two). Draw a straight line between the two points. This line should be reasonably
parallel with the carrier.

Move the boom parallel with the line. Use two plummet lines to check when the boom is parallel with
the line. Calibrate the boom by typing
4
Run roll-over to the most usual drilling position (90° degrees left for boom I, straight down (180° ) for
boom II, and 90 ° degrees right for boom III).
Move the feed (without moving the boom) parallel with the line that is parallel with the carrier. Check
parallelism with two plummet lines. Calibrate by typing
5
Move the feed into horizontal position using a spirit level. Note that the same roll-over positions should
be used as for aligning of feeds, except for boom II that must be straight up (0°). Calibrate by
typing
2
Repeat procedures in 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 with the other booms as necessary.
To exit calibrating mode, press , whereby the system returns to basic mode (display of direction
angles).
From the depth displaying state (indicator lights 4 and 8 on) you can enter the direction displaying
state by pressing or ( only versions DD and DDS, DDSS)

respectively, and the indicator light in the upper left corner of the key will illuminate to indicate the
selected boom.
Look-out angle (=drilling direction) can be shown in degrees or meters. When meters (distance) are
used, look-out angle is calculated according to given hole depth.
Unit of look-out angle can be changed by pressing
m
When indicator light 2 is on, direction angles are shown in degrees, with one decimal (0.1 degree’s
accuracy).
When indicator light 3 is on, direction angles are shown in meters, with two decimals (0.01 meter’s
accuracy).
SET 0
NOTE! The direction of horizontal angle can be changed for each boom separately.
SET 0
NOTE! The direction of vertical angle is changed for each boom simultaneously.
Navigating means that a reference direction is given, and drilling angles are shown in relation to that
direction.
The jumbo is navigated by moving a boom (often boom 1) into the desired direction ( = reference
direction), and then the following keys are pressed:
or
SET REF SET REF
Drilling angles are shown in relation to either the jumbo’s carrier (indicator light 5 off) or the given
reference (indicator light 5 on).
Reference can be changed by pressing

Calibration is necessary only when using the TMS system for the very first time or when it is necessary
to re-calibrate transducers for some reason.

Return automatic is connected into the logic. It works after the preset drilling depth is achieved. There
is no separate button for this. The automatics will always be on during drilling. If you want the drifter
to return from the limit switch at front the setting of the drilling depth must be more than the length of
the feed rail.
If the drilling depth is set up 0 the rock drill won’t start.

TMS DDS:
If the display unit is not powered i.e none of the indicator lights are on, then
1. measure power (24 VDC) inside rig’s electric main box with a multimeter.
2. open the TMS control box (4 screws). Measure power (24 VDC) from terminal block by multimeter
(look figure 3).
All the indicator lights can be tested by turning power off and on again. When switching on all the
indicator lights should remain on for about 4 seconds.
If the display unit is unpowered, check the cable and the connectors. If OK, then check the jumpers
on the motherhood (see electrical diagrams). Check if +15V / -15V voltage comes from the display
unit to the terminals of the central processing unit by measuring the voltage across the terminals 61
and 64. If the voltage is 30V and the display does not still work, the unit has to be changed.

indicates the state of a transducer ( 0 = OFF, 1 = ON)
the meaning of the digits are
Boom 1 (upper display):
• 2 first digits on the upper display: Drilling depth pulses forwards and back, (CF-feed double-shape
pulse). Test by moving the drifter.
Lower display:
• 3 digits on lower display: Rock drill rear position sensors for booms 1, 2, and 3. Test by running the
rock drills to and from rear position.
If an input does not function correctly, check electric connections and the condition of the sensors.
Drilling depth sensors must be checked by measuring voltages at contacts 4 and 7 of pulse sensor
adapter at TMS- P box. (CF -feed must be checked by measuring voltages at contact 45,46,47,48,49
and 50 of pulse sensor adapter at DPU box). The signal must be approx. 22 V when the sensor is
activated, and 0 V when the sensor is not activated.
SET
Press until the upper display shows the figure corresponding to the sensor. Refer to Appendix
A.
When the correct sensor display is chosen, the sensor can be tested by running the corresponding
movement. When tilt angle is changed, the figure on the lower display changes so that one degree
corresponds to 180. The figure varies between -32768 and 32768.
sine - channels:
If the measured resistances are far from these values, then corresponding inclinometer or resolvers
has to be replaced. The resistance values might vary slightly, as shown on the above list, depending
on the various manufactures of the interchangeable resolvers.

If drilling depth counter does not work, although depth measuring is calibrated (chapter 12), an

Fig 6. Ideal pulse-shape of the pair of the inductive switches
TF and THF feeder:
1. The pulses must be measured at contacts 4 and 7 (sensors 1 and 2 respectively) of sensor adapter

2. If pulse shape is not according to Fig. 6 with rapid movement, the connections from the pulse
sensor adapter to the DPU must be checked and the adapter must be replaced if faulty.
CF feed:
1. The pulses must be checked by measuring voltages at contact 45,46,47,48,49 and 50 of pulse
sensor adapter at DPU box.
2. If pulse shape is not according to Fig. 6, the sensors must be checked and faulty sensors replaced.
The pulse shape adjusted according to Fig. 6.

pulse sensor pair is mounting at a feed mechanism sprocket wheel.)

0,9mm 1,0 mm
Pulse sensors are screwed in position so that the clearance is approx. 0.9 -1mm, then the locking
nut is tightened and the clearance is checked. The depth sensors’ pulse shape is checked at rapid
movement. The final clearance is adjusted so that the pulse shape is according to Fig. 6.
When a pulse sensor is installed, the flow sensor must be
disconnected from the hydraulic circuit.
If the pulse sensor is mounted too deep between the teeth, the
flow sensor will be destroyed when pressure is connected to it.
