2. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT TMS

2.1. TMS versions

Hole depth is measured by two methods.

• THF = the hole depth is measured by the flow sensors.
• CF = the hole depth is measured by the flow sensors at the feed mechanism sprocket wheel.

TMS-DATA DISPLAYING UNIT IS DELIVERED IN FOUR VERSIONS:

TMS D JUMBO
• displays the direction angles of drilling (vertical and horizontal)

TMS DD JUMBO
• in addition to the direction angles, hole depth is displayed too.

TMS DDS JUMBO

• in addition to the direction angles and hole depth information penetration rate of drilling is displayed
too.

TMS DDSS JUMBO

• like DDS but with return automatics.

2.2. Power up

TMS system is always powered (24 VDC) if the rig itself is powered.
During power up all the indicator lights are on for about 4 seconds.

5. CALIBRATION OF THE DIRECTION TRANSDUCERS

Calibration of direction sensors is required in the following

cases only:

1. When using the TMS system for the first time

2. When DPU is replaced.
3. When CPU board of DPU is replaced.
4. When memory circuit (permanent RAM) is replaced on CPU board.
5. When a direction sensor is replaced.

5.1. Entering calibration mode

Press the following keys to enter calibration mode:

SET 1 2 3 4

xt C 0-5 is displayed on the upper display

5.2. Calibrating

Before calibrating, make sure that

• the bolting cylinders of each boom are turned in
• the limiter of feed tilt sensor is in correct position. This is done by checking that the limiting screw
in end plate of the sensor units mounted to the feed cradle is pointing straight down when roll-over
is turned to the maximum position to the left or right.
• the Jumbo is on a level surface on which auxiliary lines can be drawn.
• the frame link of an articulating Jumbo is straight. To verify straightness, measure the distance of
the frame parts at suitable flat points on both sides of the link symmetrically. When the measured
distance is the same on both sides, the frame link is straight.
• the wheels of a Jumbo with wheel steering are straight.

5.2.1. Levelling of carrier

When levelling the carrier lengthwise and sideways into horizontal position, place a spirit level on the
boom swing sensor box.
The carrier lengthwise sensor can now be calibrated by typing
1
The carrier sideways sensor is calibrated separately for each boom. Select boom by typing I, II, or
III, and calibrate the sideways sensor by typing
3
Calibrate the sideways sensor for each boom.
If the sideways position of the booms as measured from the top of the sensor box differs more than
0.1° move the carrier into horizontal position separately for each boom before calibrating.

5.2.2. Aligning of boom

Draw a line at the boom position on the ground surface. The line should be as long as the boom, and
parallel with the carrier. Refer to Fig. 2.
• Draw two long straight lines with the aid of, for instance, a string that is pulled straight along the
sides of the tyres at hub height.
• Measure two points on both lines at distances x and y from the front wheel hubs.
• Measure the distances l and m, and mark their centre points on the ground surface (divide the
measurements by two). Draw a straight line between the two points. This line should be reasonably
parallel with the carrier.

Move the boom parallel with the line. Use two plummet lines to check when the boom is parallel with
the line. Calibrate the boom by typing
4

Run roll-over to the most usual drilling position (90° degrees left for boom I, straight down (180° ) for
boom II, and 90 ° degrees right for boom III).
Move the feed (without moving the boom) parallel with the line that is parallel with the carrier. Check
parallelism with two plummet lines. Calibrate by typing
5

5.2.3. Levelling of the feed

Move the feed into horizontal position using a spirit level. Note that the same roll-over positions should
be used as for aligning of feeds, except for boom II that must be straight up (0°). Calibrate by
typing
2

Repeat procedures in 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 with the other booms as necessary.

5.2.4. Exit from calibrating mode

To exit calibrating mode, press , whereby the system returns to basic mode (display of direction

angles).

21.2. Testing the display unit

All the indicator lights can be tested by turning power off and on again. When switching on all the
indicator lights should remain on for about 4 seconds.
If the display unit is unpowered, check the cable and the connectors. If OK, then check the jumpers
on the motherhood (see electrical diagrams). Check if +15V / -15V voltage comes from the display
unit to the terminals of the central processing unit by measuring the voltage across the terminals 61
and 64. If the voltage is 30V and the display does not still work, the unit has to be changed.

21.3. Testing transducers

Digital inputs of the system can be shown on display by pressing:

SET

after which there are 6 digits on the upper display, and one digit on the lower display. Each digit
indicates the state of a transducer ( 0 = OFF, 1 = ON)
the meaning of the digits are
Boom 1 (upper display):
• 2 first digits on the upper display: Drilling depth pulses forwards and back, (CF-feed double-shape
pulse). Test by moving the drifter.

Boom 3 (upper display):

• 2 last digits on the upper display: Drilling depth pulses forwards and back, (CF-feed double-shape
pulse). Test by moving the drifter.

Lower display:
• 3 digits on lower display: Rock drill rear position sensors for booms 1, 2, and 3. Test by running the
rock drills to and from rear position.

If an input does not function correctly, check electric connections and the condition of the sensors.
Drilling depth sensors must be checked by measuring voltages at contacts 4 and 7 of pulse sensor
adapter at TMS- P box. (CF -feed must be checked by measuring voltages at contact 45,46,47,48,49
and 50 of pulse sensor adapter at DPU box). The signal must be approx. 22 V when the sensor is
activated, and 0 V when the sensor is not activated.

21.4. Testing resolvers (inclinometers)

21.4.1. Testing from keyboard

You can test the inclinometer of inclination by pressing

SET

Press until the upper display shows the figure corresponding to the sensor. Refer to Appendix

A.
When the correct sensor display is chosen, the sensor can be tested by running the corresponding
movement. When tilt angle is changed, the figure on the lower display changes so that one degree
corresponds to 180. The figure varies between -32768 and 32768.

21.4.2. Testing by measuring

Each of the resolvers (inclinometers) can be tested in the following way:

a) Open the cover of the control box ( 2 screws ). Remove the fuse. Remove the flat cable connector
from the terminal block.
b) Measure resistance between two of the following pins on terminal with multimeter. Resistance
values should be between (look figures 2 and 5)
cosine-channels:

1-2 225 - 650 Ω carrier swing

3-4 225 - 650 Ω carrier tilt
5-6 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 1)
7-8 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 1)
9 - 10 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 1)
11 - 12 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 2)
13 - 14 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 2)
59 - 60 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 2)
37 - 38 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 3)
39 - 40 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 3)
41 - 42 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 3)

sine - channels:

15 - 16 225 - 650 Ω carrier swing

17 - 18 225 - 650 Ω carrier tilt
19 - 20 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 1)
21 - 22 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 1)
23 - 24 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 1)
25 - 26 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 2)
27 - 28 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 2)
57 - 58 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 2)
31 - 32 225 - 650 Ω boom swing (boom 3)
33 - 34 225 - 650 Ω feed swing (boom 3)
35 - 36 225 - 650 Ω feed tilt (boom 3)

If the measured resistances are far from these values, then corresponding inclinometer or resolvers
has to be replaced. The resistance values might vary slightly, as shown on the above list, depending
on the various manufactures of the interchangeable resolvers.
See fig. 5 for the resolvers operation.

Fig 5. Operating principle of the resolvers

It is also possible to test resolvers when power is on in the following way:
Measure the AC-voltage from all the connected sine- and cosine channels. When resolver (or
inclinometer) is rotated then AC- voltage should vary between about 0 VAC - 3.8 VAC. The voltage
in the connected 400 Hz feed should be about 3.8 VAC.
This is the best way to check that inclinometer is not stuck i.e
NOTE! the AC-voltage changes when the inclinometer is turned
around.

(Versions DD and DDS only). If the display of the drilling

directions does not change when inclinometer (or resolver) is
rotated, then check that the green indicator light ( in the R/D-
card ) flashes about 2 times a second i.e CPU-card reads angle-
values. If this light does not flash even if the drilling direction
NOTE!
displaying state is on and the resolver (or the inclinometer) is
moved then switch power off and on again. If this light still
doesn’t flash, you have to replace the R/D- or CPU-card or both.
With 3-boom jumbos, the indicator lights of both R/D boards
must be flashing if boom 3 is selected.

In D versions of one and two-boom jumbos the indicator light is

NOTE!
not flashing.

21.5. Testing drilling depth sensor installation

If drilling depth counter does not work, although depth measuring is calibrated (chapter 12), an
oscilloscope or multimeter must be used to check the pulse form of the pulse sensors.
The pulse shape that the sensors should give is shown in Fig. 6.

at TMS P box.
2. If pulse shape is not according to Fig. 6 with rapid movement, the connections from the pulse
sensor adapter to the DPU must be checked and the adapter must be replaced if faulty.

CF feed:
1. The pulses must be checked by measuring voltages at contact 45,46,47,48,49 and 50 of pulse

Pulse sensors are screwed in position so that the clearance is approx. 0.9 -1mm, then the locking
nut is tightened and the clearance is checked. The depth sensors’ pulse shape is checked at rapid
movement. The final clearance is adjusted so that the pulse shape is according to Fig. 6.
When a pulse sensor is installed, the flow sensor must be
disconnected from the hydraulic circuit.

The clearance is checked with a feeler blade through the flow

opening of the flow sensor.

If the pulse sensor is mounted too deep between the teeth, the
flow sensor will be destroyed when pressure is connected to it.

CF -feed sensors mounting screw until it touches the wheel

tooth. After that, unscrew it about one turn (clearance is
maximum 1 mm). Then locking the nut.
