Introduction to the subject

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a dual-focused

educational approach in which the additional language is used for the learning
and teaching of both content and language. That is, in the teaching and learning
process, there is a focus not only on content, and not only on language. Each is
interwoven, even if the emphasis is greater on one or the other at a given time.
CLIL is not a new form of language education. It is not a new form of subject
education. It is an innovative fusion of both.

Introduction to Unit 1
• What types of bilingualism are explained in the video?

• What did you understand about each type of

bilingualism?

• Do you fit into any of these categories?

• According to the video, why do children have an

easier time learning a foreign language? Because the
plasticity of their developing brains lets them use both hemispheres of
the brain in language acquisition.

• How was bilingualism viewed before the 1960s? Before

the 60s, bilingualism was considered a handicap and slowed a child’s
development by forcing them to spend too much energy
distinguishing between languages, a view largely based on flawed
studies.

• According to the video, what are some advantages of

being bilingual? It makes your brain more healthy, complex, and
actively engaged. It also strengthens the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
- which helps with problem-solving and switching between tasks.

Introduction to Unit 1

“Bilingual education is the only way to educate children in the twenty-first century.” Ofelia García, 2009.

There are multiple benefits of being multilingual, not only as regards better job opportunities but also
cognitive processes. We can find multiple studies (likeMia Nacamulli’s video) that have shown that being
bilingual or multilingual is good for your brain and your brain’s plasticity, even delaying the onset of
dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.

Language, culture, geography, and race come together, adding other factors such as customs, ideas, or
religions. Multilingualism means the acceptance of diversity and the CLIL teacher can take advantage of
the current accessibility of the information to present material that teaches inclusiveness.
