What is It

For you to understand further on the need to study Wellness Massage,

let’s take a look first on its definition, its difference from Medical Massage as
well as the career opportunities it may bring to you and to the society.
When we say Wellness, it means the quality or state of being healthy in
body and mind especially as the result of deliberate effort (Poulsen 2010 &
Merriam Webster Dictionary). While Massage is the manipulation of tissues
(as by rubbing, kneading, or tapping) with the hand or an instrument for
relaxation or therapeutic practice of manipulating the muscles and limbs to
ease tension and reduce pains (Merriam Webster Dictionary &
medicinenet.com) and has its roots in Greek (means “to knead”), in Arabic

4
(mass or mass’h means “to press gently”) and French (masser means “to
massage”).
Therefore, Wellness Massage is a holistic approach that deals not only
by pampering or by treating any physical injuries or medical problems but
also focused on mental, spiritual and emotional aspect of the client. (Poulsen,
2010).
But how can we differentiate Wellness massage from the one offered by
physical therapist and other medical healthcare? Well, according to Swanson
(2020), there are a lot of differences between Wellness Massage and Medical
Massage. In Medical Massage, the care is delivered to a patient under the
direction of a prescribing health care provider while in Wellness Massage, the
consumer service is delivered to a client who pays for the service themselves.
The table below shows the difference based on the given criteria.
MEDICAL MASSAGE WELLNESS MASSAGE
Commercial Context Health Care System Personal Service
Industry
Customer Relationship Patient Client
Dominant Paradigm Scientific, problem- Intuitive, Nurturing
solving
Reason for Treatment Medical necessity Client Request
Focus Functional Outcomes Client Satisfaction
Termination Care Maximum medical When Client’s needs
improvement (usually) are met or change

In terms of career opportunities, according to the Department of Labor

and Employment, therapist who has completed formal training programs and
have passed the licensure exam are likely to have a very good job opportunity.
Nowadays, the interest of people in alternative medicine and holistic
healing gives opportunities for those skilled in massage therapy.
The following are the possible career opportunities under Wellness Massage:
1. Employed Massage Therapist – after having all the knowledge and skills
in Wellness Massage and completing all the necessary requirements,
one can work as a Massage therapist in spa and other establishments
catering to health and wellness.
2. Self-Employed Massage Therapist – a highly experienced massage
therapist with a large client base may have higher earnings since they
can command higher fees from their clients
3. Supervisory or Managerial Position – a Massage therapist working in spa
establishment can be promoted after he/she demonstrated the skill and
competency requirements of the position

5
4. Entrepreneur – a massage therapist with entrepreneurial skills can also
put up his/her own massage business and has the chance to earn
bigger income.
A massage therapist treats clients by using touch to manipulate the soft
tissues of the body. With their touch, therapists relieve pain, help rehabilitate
injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the
general wellness of clients.

Massage therapists typically do the following:

• Talk with clients about symptoms, medical history, and desired
results
• Evaluate clients to locate painful or tense areas of the body
• Manipulate muscles or other soft tissues of the body
• Provide clients with guidance on stretching, strengthening, overall
relaxation, and how to improve their posture
• Document client’s condition and progress
