PREFACE
This is the maiden edition of this publication “Oyo
State at a glance”. This book is produced to serve as a
guide for information on Oyo State. It is very useful for
foreigners who are anxious to know the potentials of both
materials and human endowed the State. Also, some data
would be found useful for students in secondary schools
and higher institutions of learning including Researchers
for thesis writing, projects and programs.
The information contained in this all encompassed
publication are sourced from various agencies of
government, research institutes as well as internet.
It is noteworthy to appreciate the agencies of
Government that assisted in the collation of data that
form major instrument of this publication. It is anticipated
that Ministries and extra-Ministerial Departments not
featured in this edition will endeavor to make information
available for subsequent editions.

BRIEF ON OYO STATE 1979) midwived the transition to civil rule which ushered in the

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY Late Chief Bola was the first Executive Governor, 1979-1983.

and 11 feet square with two entrances and a spiral staircase
designed by Taffy Jones, the provincial engineer who also designed
Mapo Hall. Natives of Ibadan nicknamed the tower ‘Layipo’, after
the ladder-like spiral stairway to the top of the tower.

people believe that the lake is so powerful that whatever prayer is
made with its water will yield supernatural results. It is also said that
there are sixteen (16) gods on the Oke-Ado Mountain. These gods
are embodied in specific natural landmarks on the mountain. Each
of these landmarks constitutes tourist attraction on the mountain,
lined up along the path which leads up the mountain.
The first of all the landmarks is the Ìshàgé Rock, which is a large

each of which contains a number of poems called Ese Ifa. A typical
Ese Ifa is a narrative about a person or animal with a problem and
the steps to resolve that problem. An Ese Ifa explains, the origins of
Gelede as beginning with Yemoja, "The Mother of all the orisa and
all living things." Yemoja could not have children and consulted an
Ifa oracle, who advised her to offer sacrifices and to dance with
wooden images on her head and metal anklets on her feet. After
performing this ritual, she became pregnant. Her first child was a
boy, nicknamed "Efe" (the humorist); the Efe mask emphasizes song
