PREFACE
This is the maiden edition of this publication “Oyo
State at a glance”. This book is produced to serve as a
guide for information on Oyo State. It is very useful for
foreigners who are anxious to know the potentials of both
materials and human endowed the State. Also, some data
would be found useful for students in secondary schools
and higher institutions of learning including Researchers
for thesis writing, projects and programs.
The information contained in this all encompassed
publication are sourced from various agencies of
government, research institutes as well as internet.
It is noteworthy to appreciate the agencies of
Government that assisted in the collation of data that
form major instrument of this publication. It is anticipated
that Ministries and extra-Ministerial Departments not
featured in this edition will endeavor to make information
available for subsequent editions.

BRIEF ON OYO STATE
HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY
Oyo State, which bears the sobriquet “the Pace-Setter
State”, came into existence consequent upon States creation
exercise embarked upon since Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
Going down memory lane, Western Region was one of three
Regions created by Macpherson Constitution of 1954 which
introduced a high level of autonomy for the regions. Western region
which was led by the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the first
Head of Government and later Premier became self-governing in
1957 as a prelude to political independence of the country in 1960.
In 1963, the Mid-Western Region consisting of the present
Edo and Delta States was excised from the region. Also in the 1967
State creation exercise, Western Region was renamed Western
State. Furthermore, during the 1967 States creation exercise, both
Ondo and Ogun States were carved from the Western State and
what remained of the State was named OYO STATE.
In another nationwide State creation in 1991, Osun State was
carved out of the old Oyo state. Ibadan, reputed to be the largest
indigenous city in Africa, South of Sahara, has been the capital and
Centre of Administration since then. Oyo State, popularly referred to
as the “Pace Setter” is one of the constituent 36 States of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Brigadier, now Major-General David Medaiyese Jemibewon
(rtd) was the first Military Governor of the State (1976-1978). His
successor, Colonel, now Major Paul C. Tarfa, rtd (July, 1978- Sept.,

1979) midwived the transition to civil rule which ushered in the
Second Republic on October 1, 1979.
Late Chief Bola was the first Executive Governor, 1979-1983.
He was succeeded by Chief Victor Omololu Olunloyo, who was the
second Executive Governor between October 1, 1983 and December
31, 1983. His tenure was truncated by the military take-over on
December 31, 1983.
On 4th January 1984, Colonel (now Major-General Oladayo
Popoola, rtd) came in as the Military Governor of the State. In
September 1985, he passed the baton to Colonel, now Brigadier
General Adetunji Idowu Olurin (rtd). It was the turn of late Colonel
(later Brig. General) Adedeji Sasaenia Oresanya, who was sworn-in
on 27th July, 1988.
On 3rd September, 1990, late Colonel, later Major-General
AbdulKarim Adisa (Rtd) was posted to the State as Military
Governor. It was during his tenure, precisely Tuesday, 27th August,
1991, that another nationwide State creation exercise was
performed during which Osun State with the appellation “State of
Living Spring” was carved out of Oyo State.
Late Chief Kolapo Olawuyi Ishola was sworn-in as the third
Executive Governor of the State on January 2, 1992 at the inception
of democratic rule in the Third Republic. He was there until
November 17, 1993 when General Sanni Abacha came on board as
the Military Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
At the return of the military in the governance of the
country, Navy Captain, later Rear Admiral Adetoye Sode (rtd) was
posted to Oyo State as Military Administrator on 9 th December,
1993. Late Colonel Chinyere Ike Nwosu (Rtd) was the Military
Administrator of the State between 1994 and 1996, while Col,

Ahmed Usman (rtd) became Military Administrator of the State The vegetation pattern of the State is that of rain forest in the South

 OGBOMOSO
The Ogbomoso dwell in the town of that nemean and surrounding
towns and villages. The people have their home on the strategic
route linking the northern parts of Nigeria to the south. In times
past, there were fearless warriors. They have many things in
common with the Oyos in particular and other sub-cultural groups in
Yorubaland. Today, the people are established in all areas of
modern business and public service. They are renowned traders,
and can be located in any part of the country conducting their
businesses. They are established all over Northern Nigeria and the
West African sub-region.
 IBARAPAS
The Ibarapas are scattered over seven major towns and surrounding
villages. The towns are: Eruwa, Tapa, Ayete, Igbo-Ora, Lanlate,
Igangan and Idere. The Ibarapas have a distinct dialect that
separates them from their nearest neighbours. The people have
similarities with Oyos, they are mainly farmers. Yam and cassava
flour (elubo) are major farm products in the area. They also engage
in plantation farming-cultivating cocoa and palm produce.

 OKE-OGUNS
The Oke-Oguns occupy the guinea savannah area of Oyo State.
Many sources ascribe same origin to the Oke-ogun people and the
Oyos. The people are scattered over several towns and villages,
namely Iseyin, Saki, Okeho, Igbeti, Igboho and others. The people
are hardworking and hospitable. The people of Oke-ogun are mainly
farmers. The area is tagged the “Food baskets” of Oyo State.
Weaving and pottery are cottage industries well development
among the people. The people are noted for their business acumen.
LOCATION
Oyo State is located between latitude 7 3 and 9 12 North of
the equator and longitudes 2 47 and 4 23’ East of the Meridian. This
location confers on the State the equatorial climatic conditions. The
State covers a total of 27,249square kilometers of land mass on
altitude 500m south and 1,219m north. It is bounded in the South by
Ogun State (Gateway State), in the North by Kwara State (State of
Harmony). In the west; it is bounded partly by Ogun State and by the
Republic of Benin, while in the East; it is bounded by State of Osun
(State of the living spring) in the East.

BOWER’S TOWER
Relics and monuments of historical facts that surfaced
during the creation of Ibadan are the prestigious Bower’s Tower in
Oke Are, Agodi Garden, Trans Amusement Park, First Television in
Africa now NTA Ibadan, Museums in Alesinloye, Cocoa House at
Dugbe, Mapo Hall at Oja’ba, Premier Hotel and many others that
once made Ibadan a tourist’s delight.
Bower’s Tower is located on the summit of Oke-Are, the
highest hill in Ibadan, from which one enjoys a commanding view of
the city. Oke-Are (“The Army Chief’s Hill”) is the site central to Igbo-
Agala (Agala Forest) in Sapati Area.
The monument was erected in 1836 as a memorial to
Captain Robert Lister Bower, the first British resident in Ibadan and
the Travelling Commissioner for the interior of Yoruba land (as the
stiffly officious British termed his office), Southwestern Nigeria
between 1893 and 1897.

According to S. Ademola Ajayi, Bower’s Tower is 60 feet high
and 11 feet square with two entrances and a spiral staircase
designed by Taffy Jones, the provincial engineer who also designed
Mapo Hall. Natives of Ibadan nicknamed the tower ‘Layipo’, after
the ladder-like spiral stairway to the top of the tower.
From the top of the Tower, the ancient city lays before you,
spread out in her splendor; but today, getting to the peak of the
Tower will not make one see more than 1/3 of the great city of
warriors.
Bowers Tower, according to some of the residents around
that place was a source of economic fortune to the people of the
area. The traffic into the heritage site blossomed and the economic
activity of its environment was a strong economic foundation for the
growing generation.
AGODI GARDENS, IBADAN
This is a lovely park right in the midst of Ibadan. Agodi
Gardens spread over 13 acres of land. The delightful spot shares the
same locality with the premier hotel, Cultural Centre, University
College Teaching Hospital, State Government Secretariat, and Bodija
Housing Estate.
It was a place to be in Ibadan in the 70s and 80s to catch fun
and enjoy a family outing. Second only to the popular University of
Ibadan Zoological Garden, Agodi Gardens, Ibadan is a city
recreational centre that any family or fun-seeking tourist would
want to patronize.

Tucked in the heart of the Oyo State capital, the garden is
located at the foot of Mokola Hill, backing the State Government
Secretariat, Agodi and the western part of the expansive Agodi
Government Reserved Area (GRA) which houses both the seat of the
State Government, Governor’s Lodge and a prestigious Housing
Estate.
While all these border Agodi Gardens on the eastern part,
the recreational centre borders a lake, hilltop Premier Hotel and
Cultural Centre on the west. The first teaching hospital in Nigeria,
the University College Hospital (UCH) borders the centre on the
southern part to give it an elitist and sophisticated environment.
Sprawling on a 35-hectre landed facility, the garden which
was established as a biological and relaxation centre to provide
recreational as well as educational services for inhabitants and
visitors in 1967, as a foremost tourist centre.
ADO-AWAYE SUSPENDED LAKE
Ado-Awaye Suspended Lake: The Heartbeat of Oke-Ogun

High in the sky soars the tranquil Iyake Lake, also known as
Ado-Awaye Lake, reposed graciously at the peak of Oke-Ado
Mountain in Oyo State, South-West Nigeria. These mountains
spread from Ado-Awaye town into the surrounding plains, standing
imposingly above the verdant rainforests and they hold numerous
natural, cultural and historical attractions which are of great
spiritual significance to the Ado-Awaye people.
Ado-Awaye town itself is a small town with its own unique
but interesting history. In ancient time, Ado and Awaye settlements
existed separately. The ancestors of the Adó people were forced to
migrate from Awori Land to settle at the top of Oke-Ado Mountain
because of the Dahomey war. The ancestors of the Ado people
found favour in the eyes of the gods of the mountain and were kept
safe till the war subsided. When the Ado people later descended the
mountain to settle at its foothill, the nearby Àwáyè people also
decided to settle with them, and hence the name Adó-Àwáyè by
which the town is called till this day.
While the Ado people lived on the mountain, they worshiped
the mountain and revered the various unique natural formations
they found on the mountain. It was said that barren women among
the people at the time were able to give birth due to their devotion
to the worship of the mountain. The tranquil Iyake Lake is one of the
most revered attractions on the mountain. The ancestors of the Ado
people believe that the lake is so powerful that whatever prayer is
made with its water will yield supernatural results. It is also said that
there are sixteen (16) gods on the Oke-Ado Mountain. These gods
are embodied in specific natural landmarks on the mountain. Each
of these landmarks constitutes tourist attraction on the mountain,
lined up along the path which leads up the mountain.
The first of all the landmarks is the Ìshàgé Rock, which is a large

elongate boulder of rock, balanced and standing upright on one of
its small edges. The fact that this boulder has not fallen off the steep
mountain side on which it rests remains a mystery to the Ado-
Awaye people and tourists visiting the mountain. Ishage Rock is
regarded as one of the most powerful among the gods on the
mountain. It is said that it grants the wishes of people who prays at
its foot. It was also said that whenever there is severe drought in the
land, the chief priest of the mountain will visit the mountain and
wrap a white cloth around the ‘waist’ of Ishage rock; rain will fall
heavily upon the land that night and the Ishage Rock will drop off
the white cloth.
ROYAL FOREST “IGBO OBA” IGBOHO
Igboho was the second settlement of Alaafin of Oyo Empire
after its first destruction by the Fulani jihadist and was then known
as Oyo Igboho. It is situated on a plain but with hill locks all around.
It was then the temporary Headquarters of Oyo Empire. It was a city
famous for its magnificent city walls created and built for defensive
purpose.
However, Alaafin Ofinran who led the people to Igboho did
on route Igboho whie his successor Alaafin Egungunoju or Egunoju
finally led the people to Igboho in 1510. Four Alaafins were buried at
a place called Royal Forest (Igbo-Oba) in Igboho. It is sacred place
where hunting, cutting and any other things are forbidden.
The four Alaafins (Royal Fathers) buried in the Royal Forest
(Igbo-Oba) are Alaafin, Egungun Oju or Egunoju, Orompoto and
Ajiboye Obamoro (Ghost Catcher that led the people back to Old
Oyo (Oyo-ile) before final destruction in 1837.

OLD OYO NATIONAL PARK
Upper Ogun Game and Old Oyo were separated reserves
until 1963 when they were merged and re-named Upper Ogun
Game Reserve. It is one of the national parks of Nigeria, located
across Northern Oyo State and Southern Kwara State, Nigeria. The
park has total land mass of 2,512 km2 and is located in South West
park of Nigeria, specifically Northern Oyo State at latitude 8° 15’ and
9° 00’N and longitude 3° 35’ and 4° 42’ E. The location has inevitably
placed the park at a vantage position of abundance land area as well
as diverse wildlife and cultural/historical settings. Eleven Local
Government Areas out of which ten (10) fall within Oyo State and
one (1) in Kwara State surround it. The Administrative Head Office is
located in Oyo, Isokun area along Oyo-Iseyin Road, where necessary
information and booking could be made. The landscaping and
organized space within the large yard has made the facility very
endearing to the public. It is rich in plant and animal resources
including buffaloes, bushbuck and a variety of birds. The park is
easily accessible from South-Western and North-Western Nigeria.
The nearest cities and towns adjoining Old Oyo National Park
include Saki, Iseyin, Igboho, Sepeteri, Tede and Igbeti which have

their own commercial and cultural attractions for tourists. The park
takes its name from Oyo-lle (Old Oyo), the ancient Political Capital of
Oyo Empire of the Yoruba people, and contains the ruins of this city.
Oyo Ile was destroyed in the late 18th century by Ilorin and
Hausa/Fulani warriors at the culmination of the rebellion of Afonja,
commander of Oyo Empire's provincial army for which he allied
himself with Hausa/Fulani Muslim jihadists.
The national park originated in two earlier native
administrative forest reserves, Upper Ogun established in 1936 and
Oyo-lle established in 1941. These were converted to game reserves
in 1952, then combined and upgraded to the present status of a
National Park.
AGBELE ROCK FORMATION
This occurrence took place at Oke-Ogun Igbeti, Olorunshogo
Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Historically, there is this believe in the ancient time that nemesis
follows every actions of a human being, which in the case of this
woman who metamophorsed from a natural structure to a hill, one
in human form. Everyone in Oke-Ogun, Igbeti, Olorunshogo Local
Government Areas of Northern part of Oyo State believes the
history of this rock called "Agbele" depicts a 19th century powerful
and popular woman in the town. With a baby on her back, she went
to a rocky side of the town to steal pieces of sliced yam being dried
by sunlight. In those days, there is instant nemesis for every wrong
action taken. Therefore this woman metamorphosed into a rock
(just like Lots wife turning into salt in the Holy Bible).
A critical look at the human-like structure; the stones above
signify the calabash she put the piece of yam stolen on her head,
then the back represent the baby she was backing, the stone in
between represent the head while beneath being the body.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH OYO
PEOPLE
A giant male land tortoise believed to have lived in the palace of
the king of Ogbomoso for 344 years (died on Oct. 2019). The
primeval town of Ogbomoso, the second largest city in Oyo State,
has an ancient resident – a giant male land tortoise, which was
acclaimed to have lived in the palace of the Soun (the king) of
Ogbomosoland for 344 years until its death on 2nd October, 2019.
In Iine with its age, it is called Alagba, which means ”the
elderly one” in Yoruba. And, in Ogbomoso, where the legendary
tortoise lumbers about in the palatial grounds of the king, it is
almost a sacrilege to refer to Alagba as a mere tortoise. It can carry
full grown adult on its back but this has been discourage by the
orders of the incumbent Soun HM Oba Jimoh Oladunni Ajagungbade

IREFIN PALACE, IBADAN

Here is an ancient palace, said to be over 200 years old, it
was built with mud and timber (wood), and yet still standing strong
on the soils of Ibadan City, southwest Nigeria. This palace is located
in the Tropical Rainforest Region of Nigeria, enduring over two
centuries of countless rainfall and sunshine, and has not collapsed.
This palace is definitely a unique cultural, scientific and historical
object we must do all we can to preserve.
The Irefin palace belongs to one of the Royal families of
Ibadan.The Irefin clans were warriors in the days of old who settled
in the Ibadan area known then as a resting settlement for travelers.
The palace was the abode of a powerful chief in Ibadan enclave,
called “Ba’ale Irefin”, who ruled from 1912 to1914. Preserved at the
ancient palace are ancient diaries showing old records of events that
took place at the Irefin Palace in the olden days. Irefin Palace
contains about One hundred and Eighty-Five (185) rooms and the
building is still standing up till today. Among the numerous rooms in
the palace are the clan’s ‘spiritual powerhouse’ and the judgment
room where misunderstandings within the clan are resolved or
punishment meted out to the iniquitous. It is worthy of note to
mention here that a part of the palace was used in the popular old
Nollywood movie Saworoide.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH OYO PEOPLE
Culturally, the Oyos are noted with the best hospitality in the
universe. Apart from the cuisines, the means of entertainment
including the talking drum, sekere and other musical instruments.
A peep into entertainment industry of the Oyos include the
Dundun, Gelede, Sekere Egungun etc which are used culturally
during traditional festivals and at times staged to welcome visitors.

DUNDUN TALKING DRUMS
Dundun drums are said to have originated from among the ibaruba
ethnic group in a town called Saworo (just 18km from Saki) when
the group was under the rule of old Oyo Empire.
There are five drums in the set, namely: Gudugudu, Iya-Ilu, Omole
isaju, Omole Ikeyin and Kerikeri or Agbada.
About five to six persons play the set at once with one or two
persons in the reserve. There are other drums of dundun family
such as Gangan or Adamo, Apala, Dadakuada or Pankeke.

Most Yoruba myths of origin can be found in the divination
narratives knows at Odu Ifa. There are approximately 256 Odu Ifa,
each of which contains a number of poems called Ese Ifa. A typical
Ese Ifa is a narrative about a person or animal with a problem and
the steps to resolve that problem. An Ese Ifa explains, the origins of
Gelede as beginning with Yemoja, "The Mother of all the orisa and
all living things." Yemoja could not have children and consulted an
Ifa oracle, who advised her to offer sacrifices and to dance with
wooden images on her head and metal anklets on her feet. After
performing this ritual, she became pregnant. Her first child was a
boy, nicknamed "Efe" (the humorist); the Efe mask emphasizes song
and jests because of the personality of its name sake. Yemoja's
second child was a girl, nicknamed "Gelede" because she was obese
like her mother. Also like her mother, Gelede loved dancing.
After getting married neither Gelede or Efe's partner could
have children. The Ifa oracle suggested they try the same ritual that
had worked for their mother. No sooner than Efe and Gelede
performed these rituals- dancing with wooden images on their
heads and metal anklets on their feet- they started having children.
These rituals developed into the Gelede masked dance and were
perpetuated by the descendants of Efe and Gelede.
This narrative is one of many stories that explains the origin of
Gelede. An outdated theory states that the beginning of Gelede
might be associated with the change from a matriarchal to a
patriarchal society.

EGUNGUN MASQURADES
Egungun, in the broadest sense of the word, refers to all types of
Yoruba masquerades or masked, costumed figures. When used in its
more specific, common sense, "Egungun" refers to the Yoruba
masquerades connected with ancestor reverence, or to the
ancestors themselves as a collective force. The singular form, for an
individual ancestor, is Egun.
The classification of Egun or Egungun types, which might
appear to be a fairly straightforward task, is in fact an extremely
complex problem involving the comprehension of indigenous
taxonomies. The difficulties include: the problem of distinguishing
between personal Egun names and generic terms for types; the
problem of determining "sets" where one masquerader may be
regarded as within several type categories simultaneously; the
practice of "layering," in which a masquerader wears one costume
type over another and changes these during performance; and the
variety of criteria used to classify Egungun as well as the range of
variations within type categories. Such factors demonstrate the

complexity attending the analysis of indigenous taxonomies and the
classification of masquerade types. These same difficulties arise in
the definition and use of the term Egungun itself.
Amongst the Yoruba, the annual ceremonies in honor of the
dead serve as a means of assuring their ancestors a place among the
living. They believe the ancestors have the responsibility to compel
the living to uphold the ethical standards of the past generations of
their clan, town or family. The Egungun are celebrated in festivals,
known as Odun Egungun, and in family ritual through the
masquerade custom.
In family situations, a family elder known either formally or
informally as "Alagba" presides over ancestral rites. He may or may
not be initiated into the local Egungun society. In matters that deal
with whole communities, Egungun priests and initiates who are
trained in ancestral communication, ancestral elevation and
funerary rites are assigned to invoke and bring out the ancestors.
They wear elaborate costumes in masquerade. Through drumming
and dance, the Egungun robed performers are believed to become
possessed by the spirits of the ancestors, as manifested as a single
entity. The Egungun spiritually clean the community through the
dramatic acting and miming of the robed priests. They demonstrate
both ethical and a moral behavior that have occurred since their last
visit. In this way, they expose the strengths and weaknesses of the
community to encourage behavior more befitting of their
descendants. When this performance is completed, the performers
as Egungun give messages, warnings and blessings to the assembled
spectators.
Important Egungun include the Oloolu and Alapansanpa,
both of Ibadanland. Elewe of the Ìgbómìnà Yoruba clan, which is

common in the towns of Òkè-Ìlá Òràngún, Ìlá Òràngún, and
Arandun, is also of particular prominence.
In Brazil, the main cult of the Egungun is found on the island
of Itaparica, in the State of Bahia. Houses of worship dedicated to
the Egungun also exist in other states.
BLACKSMITH
Blacksmithing is a profession and is the art of forging items
out of metals, minerals, and other trade goods. Blacksmiths utilize
bars of metal unearthed and smelted by the mining profession along
with various trade and magical goods to produce their wares.
Blacksmiths work by heating pieces of wrought iron or steel
until the metal becomes soft enough for shaping with hand tools,
such as a hammer, anvil and chisel. Heating generally takes place in
a forge fueled by propane, natural gas, coal, charcoal, coke or oil.
Some modern blacksmiths may also employ an oxyacetylene
or similar blowtorch for more localized heating. Induction heating
methods are gaining popularity among modern blacksmiths.

Color is important for indicating the temperature and
workability of the metal. As iron heats to higher temperatures, it
first glows red, then orange, yellow, and finally white. The ideal heat
for most forging is the bright yellow-orange color that indicates
forging heat. Because they must be able to see the glowing color of
the metal, some blacksmiths work in dim, low-light conditions, but
most work in well-light conditions. The key is to have consistent
lighting, but not too bright. Direct sunlight obscures the colors.
The techniques of smithing can be roughly divided into
forging (sometimes called "sculpting"), welding, heat-treating, and
finishing.
TIE AND DYE
Tie-dye is a modern term invented in the mid-1960s in the
United States for a set of ancient resist-dyeing techniques, and for
the products of these processes. The process of tie-dye typically
consists of folding, twisting, pleating, or crumpling fabric or a
garment and binding with string or rubber bands, followed by
application of dye(s). The manipulations of the fabric prior to

application of dye are called resists, as they partially or completely
prevent the applied dye from coloring the fabric. More sophisticated
tie-dyes involve additional steps, including an initial application of
dye prior to the resist, multiple sequential dye and resist steps, and
the use of other types of resists (stitching, stencils) and discharge
unlike regular resist-dyeing techniques, tie-dye is characterized by
the use of bright, saturated primary colors and bold patterns. These
patterns, including the spiral, mandala, and peace sign, and the use
of multiple bold colors, have become cliched since the peak
popularity of tie-dye in the 1960s and 1970s. The vast majority of
currently produced tie-dyes use these designs, and many are mass-
produced for wholesale distribution. However, a new interest in
more 'sophisticated' tie-dye is emerging in the fashion industry,
characterized by simple motifs, monochromatic color schemes, and
a focus on fashionable garments and fabrics other than cotton.A few
artists continue to pursue tie-dye as an art form rather than a
commodity.

The present system of weaving in Oyo State is only a modern
revival of the craf that was once widespread in the country. Our
grand-parents have been fashioning garments from wool, fix dye
since the medieval times
The wears specialize in the production of beautiful and
distinctive cloths from yarns which are often hand-spun and hand-
dyed. Hand looms are used in a number of places in Oyo State till
today, particularly in Iseyin which is generally referred to as the
“Manchester of Oyo State”. Ogbomoso is also famous for the
production of the poplar hand-woven cloth called “SANYAN”. Cloth
is woven from wild silk and from locally grown cotton. A mixture of
cotton threads and raphia is also woven into cloth, but is not used
for clothing. Cotton is ginned on a block using an iron roller to
squeeze out the seeds it is fluffed on a bow string, spun with simple
spindle, and rewound into skeins ready for dyeing.
WOOD CARVING
In Yorubaland wood carver are men. There are two most
important tools which are the adze, with which sculptural forms are
fashioned and the knife which is used in fininshing the surface and
with the carving, incised paterns. Both sculpture and geometrical
designs are considered as art (Ona), and those who “carve part”
(gbenegbena) in making figurines are distinguish from those who
simply “carve wood” (gbegigbegi) into mortars, pestle and utilitarian

owls. The formers are also known as “those who make art”
(onisona), along with the embroiderers and leather workers. Of all
the visual arts, wood carving accounts for the greatest variety of
decorated and sculptural forms. Carved tools are used during
initiation ceremonies of deities.
Ifa diviner are rectangular, circular or semi-circular wooden
trays whose raised borders are carved, usually in low relief. Carved
wooden poles are found in the palaces of Alaafin of Oyo, Aseyin of
Iseyin and other prominent Obas in Oyo State.
