The ionization enthalpy is expressed in units of kJ
mol". Energy is always required to
remove electrons from an atom and
hence ionization enthalpies are always
positive.

Polarity of bonds

The existence of a hundred percent ionic or covalent bond represents an ideal situation.

In rrality no bond or a compound is cither completely covalent or ionic. When covalent

bond is formed between two similar atonms, the shared pair of electrons is equally
attracted by the two atoms. As a result, electron pair is situated exactly between the two
identical nuclei. The bond so formed is called non-polar covalent bond. Contrary to this
in case of heteronuclear molecular, the shared electron pair between the two atoms gets

displaced more towards more electronegative element. The resultant covalent bond is a
polar covalent bond. As a result of polarization, the molecule possesses the dipole

moment. Mathematically, it is expressed as follows:

Dipole moment (1) =Charge (q) xdistance of separation (d)
