Gabriel is not at the ceremony. He has been granted an additional year of
nurturing because of a plea presented by Jonas’s father to the committee. He has
been labeled “Uncertain” instead of “Inadequate.” He will be allowed to spend his
nights with Jonas’s family unit, but each family member had to sign a pledge that
they would not become attached to him.

“Elsewhere” is the name of the place where those who are released go.

Caleb is a replacement child for the first Caleb who fell into the river and died at
four years old. Loss is extremely rare because of how safe the community is. When
the first Caleb died, the entire community performed the Ceremony of Loss. Now,
for the replacement, the community performs the Murmur-of-Replacement
Ceremony.
7.) Who lives next door to Jonas’s family, and what does his family fear this
neighbor will do after the ceremony?
Fritz, a very awkward boy, lives next door to Jonas’s family. He is receiving his
bicycle for the first time, and the family fears that it will often be dropped on the
front walk instead of wheeled into its port.

Tens receive a distinguishing haircut, and Elevens receive new clothing.

You can apply for Elsewhere if you don’t fit in within your community. Jonas and

Elsewhere are never seen again.

ensure that they are matched perfectly. Their dispositions, energy levels,
