Review for Test – Chapter 4

1. For the hollow cylinder shown, assume that R and r are increasing at a rate of 2 m/sec, and h is decreasing at a
rate of 3 m/sec. At what rate is the volume changing at the instant when R = 7 m, r = 4 m, and h = 5 m?

2. A ball is dropped from a point 10 ft away from a light at the top of a 48-ft pole as shown. When the ball has
dropped 16 ft, its (downward) velocity is 32 ft/sec. At what rate is its shadow moving along the ground at that
instant?

3. Use Newton’s Method to approximate all three solutions of x 3−4 x+1=0. A first guess is given for each
solution. Find each solution to 7 decimal places.

x1 = -2 x1 = 0 x1 = 2

4. Find the absolute maximum and minimum of f on the indicated interval (if they exist) and state where these

extreme values occur. f(x) = x 3−x 4 ; −1 ,

5. Find all relative extrema and points of inflection for f(x) = 2 .

6. Find all critical points for f(x) and use the second derivative test (if possible) to classify them as maxima or
minima.

2 1
f(x) = x + x2

7. A church window consisting of a rectangle topped by a semicircle is to have perimeter p. Find the radius of the
semicircle if the area of the window is to be a maximum. (r will be in terms of p!)

8. Use linearization to estimate the following values:

a) (3.02)4 b) √ 65

9. Use a differential (dy) to approximate the actual change in y (Δy) when x changes as indicated.

y = √ 3 x−2 ; from x = 2 to x = 2.03

10. The side of a square is measured to be 10 ft, with a possible error of ±0.1 ft. Use differentials to estimate the
error in the calculated area of the square.
11. Let s = t3 – 6t2. Make a table showing the position, velocity, speed, and acceleration at times t = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
At each of these times, specify the direction of motion (if any) and whether the particle is speeding up, slowing
down, or neither.

12. If s(t) = 1 + 6t - t2 , find v(t) and a(t). Use them to describe the motion of the particle. (e.g. where does it start?,
in what direction does it begin to move?, when/where does it change direction?)
