Types of circulatory systems in
multicellurlar organisms

Open circulatory system Closed circulatory system

haemolymph flows directly Blood flows in continuous
into the body cavity closed blood vessels
(haemocoel) and bathes the Heart pumps the blood to
cells all body cells for exchange
haemolymph - blood like of gases and substances
nutritious liquid found in Blood then flows back into
most intervertebrates the heart
(insects and molluscs)
Circulatory system
Open circulatory system Closed circulatory system

Single Double

Incomplete Complete
c.s of insects - open circulatory system
an insect has a tube-shaped heart with fine openings along the sides called ostia
heart contracts to pump haemolymph into haemocoel
exchange of substances occurs between the haemolymph and body cells via diffusion
heart relaxes = haemolymph flows from the haemocoel -> heart via ostia
ostium has valve - prevent haemolymph from flowing out of the heart
c.s of fish - single circulatory system
blood flows into the heart once in one complete circulation
heart pumps bloof via blood vesssels -> gills -> body tissues -> heart
1 atrium and 1 ventricle
deoxygenated blood flows into the atrium of the heart and is pumped out of the
heart from the ventricle to the gills where exchange of gases occurs
from gills: oxygenated blood flows to all body tissues that needs for respiration
body tissues: deoxygenated blood flows back to heart to repeat the cycle
c.s of amphibians - incomplete double c.s
an amphibian has a heart with 2 atria (right and left atria) and 1 ventricle
(undivided)
double circulatory system : blood flows through the heart twice in 1 complete
circulation
incomplete system: oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are mixed in the
ventricle
c.s of humans - complete double c.s
2 atria (left and right atria) & 2 ventricles (right and left ventricles)
double circulatory : blood flows through the heart 2x in 1 complete
circulation

Pulmonary circulation Systemic circulation

deoxygenated blood: oxygenated blood: left
right ventricle -> lungs ventricle -> body tissues
exchange of gases @ exchange of gases occurs
alveoli @ capillaries of body
oxygenated blood: lungs tissues
-> left atrium deoxygenated blood
flows from the body
tissues -> right atrium
