Prepositions

Prepositions are the words or the group of words,

often placed before a noun or a pronoun to express
its relation with the other part of the sentence.
From (से)
किसी जगह से (From some place):
मैं न्यूयॉर्क से आ रहा हूँ।
Main New york se aa raha hoon.
I am coming from New York.
वे जिम से कसरत करने के बाद आये।
Wey gym se kasrat karne ke baad aaye.
They came after doing exercise from the gym.
वह अमेरिका से आये हैं।
Wah america se aaye hain.
They arrived from the United States.
तुम किस स्कू ल से आये हो?
Tum kis skool se aaye ho?
Which school have you come from?
वह बिहार से है।
Wah bihar se hai.
He is from Bihar.
किसी समय से (Point of time)
मैं अगले सप्ताह से अपना काम करुँ गा।
Main agle saptah se kaam karunga.
I will start my work from the next week.
रोहित बारह बजे से पढाई करेगा।
Rohit barah baje se padhai karega.
Rohit will start studying from 12 o’clock.
फु टबॉल की प्रैक्टिस अगले सप्ताह से शुरू होगी।
Football ki practice agle saptah se shuru hogi.
The football practice will start from the next week.
जिस क्षण से वह स्कू ल में आया है उस समय से उसने नाक में दम कर रखा है।
Jis kshan se wah school me aaya hai us samay se usne naak me dam kar rakha hai.
He has been a constant nuisance from the moment he joined the school.
यह गलती अब से दोबारा नहीं होनी चाहिए।
Yeh galti ab se dobara nahi honi chahiye.
This mistake should not be repeated from now onwards.

मैंने राहुल से दुर्घटना के बारे में सुना।
Maine Rahul se durghatna ke baare mein suna.
I got to know about the accident from Rahul.
मैंने ये जरूरी जानकारी गूगल से ली।
Maine ye zaroori jankari google se li.
I got the required details from Google.
यह वह दुकान है जहाँ से मैं दूध लेता हूँ।
Yeh wah dukaan hai jahan se main doodh leta hoon.
That is the shop from which I generally buy milk.
पनीर दूध से बनता है।
Paneer doodh se banta hai.

गंगा नदी हिमालय से निकलती हैं।
Ganga nadi Himalaya se nikalti hain.

Off (से)
Leaving a surface to get separated from it (किसी सतह से
अलग होना)
रोहन ने लैपटॉप को अपने डेस्क से उठाया।
Rohan ne laptop apne desk se uthaya.
Rohan picked his laptop off his desk.
काम वाली टेबल से धूल हटा रही है।
Kaam wali table se dhool hata rahi hai.
Maid is wiping the dust off the table.
रणवीर पैराग्लाइडिंग करने के लिए हवाईजहाज से कू दा।
Ranveer paragliding karne ke liye hawaijahaj se kooda.
Ranveer jumped off the plane for paragliding.
डाइनिंग टेबल से प्लेट हटा दो।
Dining table se plate hata do.
Move the plate off the dining table.
मेट्रो से कभी जल्दबाज़ी में मत उतरा करो।
Metro se kabhi jaldbazi mein mat utra karo.
Never get off the metro in a hurry.

Since (से)
From a point of time (किसी निश्चित समय से)
मैं दोपहर से लिख रहा हूँ।
Main dopahar se likh raha hoon.
I have been writing since afternoon.
वह शनिवार से इस पर काम कर रहा है।
Wah shanivaar se is par kaam kar raha hai.
He has been working on it since Saturday.
वह बुद्धिमान है इसके लक्षण उसने बचपन से ही दिखाना शुरू कर दिए थे।
Wah buddhimaan hai iske lakshan usne bachpan se hi dikhana shuru kar diye the.
He showed signs of being a prodigy since she was a child.
उसके ग्रेजुएशन करने के बाद से ही मंदी शुरू हो गयी।
Uske graduation karne ke saath hi mandi shuru ho gayi.
There has been a recession since he completed graduation.
देश ने आज़ादी के बाद से बहुत ही शानदार विकास की है।
Desh ne azaadi ke baad se bahut hi shaandar vikaas kiya hai.
The country has seen great development since independence.

For (से)
From a period/duration of time (किसी समय की अवधि से)
भविष्य तीन घंटे से खेल रहा है।
Bhavishya teen ghante se khel raha hai.
Bhavishya has been playing for 3 hours.
वह कई दिनों से यह कर रहा है।
Wah kai dinon se yeh kar raha hai.
He has been doing this for days.
वह लम्बे समय से एक रिश्ते में है।
Wah lambe samay se ek rishte me hai.
He has been in a relationship for a long.

के लिए (For some purpose)
उसने ये अपने बेटे के लिए किया।
Usne ye apne bete ke liye kiya.
He did it for his son.
वो मेरे पास सुझाव के लिए आयी।
Wo mere pas sujhav ke liye aayi.
She came to me for a suggestion.
सैनिक देश के लिए अपनी जान न्योछावर कर देते हैं।
Sainik desh ke liye apni jaan nyochavar kar dete hain.
Soldiers sacrifice their lives for the nation.
एक माँ अपने बच्चों के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ देने की कोशिश करती है।
Ek maa apne bacche ke liye sarvshresth dene ki koshish karti hai.
A mother tries to do her best for her children.
सरकार को ग़रीबों के लिए कु छ करना चाहिए।
Sarkaar ko gareebon ke liye kuch karna chahiye.
The government should do something for the poor.
किसी चीज़ के बदले कु छ और (For exchange)
उदित ने Rs 4000 में साइकिल खरीदी।
Udit ne Rs 4000 mein saikil khareedi.
Udit purchased a cycle for Rs 4000.
उसने 105 रूपए में एक किताब खरीदी।
Usne 105 rupay me ek kitaab khareedi.
She bought a book for Rs. 105.
आई पी एल के सबसे महंगे खिलाड़ी को बैंगलोर ने 16 करोड़ में ख़रीदा था।
IPL ke sabse mehange khilaadi ko bangalore ne 16 karod me khareeda tha.
The costliest player in IPL was bought by Bangalore for 16 crores.
उसने अपने पुराने कपड़ों के बदले में सिलाई की मशीन ले ली।
Usne apne purane kapdon ke badle me silai ki machine le li.
He exchanged his old clothes for a sewing machine.
मैंने सब्ज़ी फल की दुकान से ताज़े फल बहुत ही काम दाम में ले लिए।
Maine sabzi-fal ki dukaan se taaze fal bahut hi kam daam me le liye.
I purchased fresh fruits from the grocery store for just a few bucks.

In (में, के अन्दर)
(में) – समय के साथ (With time)
मेसी जून में पैदा हुआ था।
Messi june mein paida hua tha.
Messi was born in June.
मैं 2020 में घर आऊं गा।
Main 2020 mein ghar aaunga.
I will come home in 2020.
उसने मार्च 2014 में नौकरी छोड दी थी।
Usne march 2014 mein naukri chhor di thi.
She left the job in march 2014.
राके श ऑफिस के लिए आधे घंटे में निकलेगा।
Rakesh aufis ke liye aadhe ghante me niklega.
Rakesh will leave for office in half an hour.
मैं आज शाम को अपना जन्मदिन अपने दोस्तों के साथ मनाऊं गी।
Main aaj shaam ko apna janmdin apne doston ke saath manaungi.
I will celebrate my birthday with my friends in the evening.
(में) – With large places (Country, city, town etc) – बडी जगह के साथ (किसी
देश में, किसी शहर में आदि)
वह लंदन में रहता है।
Wah London me rehta hai.
He lives in London.
महान वैज्ञानिक अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन का जन्म जर्मनी में हुआ था।
Mahan vaigyanik Albert Einstein ka janm Germany mein hua tha.
The great scientist Albert Einstein was born in Germany.
भारत एक महाद्वीप में स्थित है जिसका नाम एशिया है।
Bharat ek mahadweep me sthit hai jiska naam asia hai.
India is situated in the continent named Asia.
मैं यूरोप में इंजीनियरिंग की पढाई करूँ गा।
Main Europe mein engineering ki padhai karunga.
I will study engineering in Europe.
वह एक पांच सितारा होटल में पार्टी की व्यवस्था करवा रहा है।
Wah ek paanch sitara hotel mein party ki vyavastha karva raha hai.
He is hosting a party in a five star hotel.
(में) – In some object किसी वस्तु के अन्दर / में
मुझे तुम्हारे लैपटॉप में कोई गेम नहीं मिला।
Mujhe tumhare laptop mein koi game nahi mila.
I found no games in your laptop.
उसे किताब में एक वाक्य मिला है।
Unhe kitab mein ek vakya mila hai.
He has found a sentence in the book.
गेंद अब तुम्हारे पाले में है।
Gend ab tumhare pale mein hai.
The ball is in your court.
इस व्यंजन में नमक मत डालो।
Is vyanjan mein namak mat dalo.
Don’t mix salt in this dish.

Into (गतिशील होकर अन्दर घुसना) – To enter with a

motion
दूध को गिलास में डालो।
Doodh ko gilas me daalo.
Pour the milk into the glass.
वो कमरे में जा रहा है।
Woh kamre mein ja raha hai.
He is going into the room.
किसी भी विषय की गहराई में जाना चाहिए।
Kisi bhi vishya ki gehrai mein jaana chahiye.
Try to go into the depth of a topic.
उसने नदी में डु बकी लगाई।
Usne nadi mein dubki lagai.
She dived into the river.
इस समस्या का हल निकालिये।
Is samasya ka hal nikaliye.

Before
1. पहले(time)
यह विमान मुंबई अपने निर्धारित समय से पहले पहुँच जायेगा।
Yeh wiman mumbai apne nirdharit samay se pehle pahunch jayega.
This flight will reach Mumbai before its scheduled time.
मयंक के जाने से पहले विस्मय आ जायेगा।
Mayank ke jaane se pehle vismay aa jayega.
Vismay will come before Mayank leaves.
तुम्हें जाना चाहिए इससे पहले की तुम्हारी ट्रैन छू ट जाए।
Tumhe jaana chahiye isse pehle tumhari train chhoot jaye.
You should leave before you miss your train.
तुम ऑफिस में 30 मिनट पहले ही आ गए।
Tum aufis mein thirty minute pehle hi aa gaye.
You arrived in the office 30 minutes before time.
तुम्हारा चचेेरे भाई का जन्म तुम्हारे इस दुनिया में आने से पहले हुआ था।
Tumhare chachere bhai ka janm tumhare is duniya mein aane se pehle hua tha.
Your cousin was born before you came into this world.
2. सामने (position)
अब मैं आपके सामने बोल रहा हूँ।
Ab main aapke saamne bol raha hoon.
Now, I am speaking before you.
गरिमा अपनी माँ के सामने बैठी थी।
Garima apni maa ke samne baithi thi.
Garima was sitting before her mother.
भीड़ के सामने घबराना मत।
Bheed ke saamne ghabrana mat.
Don’t get nervous before the audience.
मैं आपके सामने अपना काम पेश करूँ गा।
Main aapke saamne apna kaam pesh karunga.
I am going to present my work before you.
उसकी हिम्मत नहीं कि वह यह मेरे सामने बोल दे।
Uski himmat nahi ki wah yeh mere saamne bol de.
She dare not speak this before me.

After
1) बाद में (time)
सर आपसे मीटिंग खत्म होने के बाद ही बात करेंगे।
Sir aapse meeting khatm hone ke baad hi baat karenge.
Sir will talk to you only after the meeting gets over.
विराट अपने दोस्तों के बाद पहुँचा।
Virat apne doston ke baad pahuncha.
Virat reached after his friends.
इसके बाद मुझे कोई परेशानी मत बताना।
Iske baad mujhe koi pareshani mat batana.
Don’t tell me the problem after this.
मैं पार्क से आने के बाद अपना होम वर्क पूरा करुँ गा।
Main park se aane ke baad apna home work pura karunga.
I’ll complete my homework after I come back from the park.
वो यह ब्रेक के बाद खायेगी।
Woh yeh break ke baad khayegi.
She will eat it after the break.
2) किसी के पीछे पड़ना (To chase someone or To persuade someone)
शौर्य एक प्रोजेक्ट में मद्दद के लिए अपने अध्यापक के पीछे पड़ा था।
Shaurya ek project mein madad ke liye adhyapak ke piche pada tha.
Shaurya was after her professor for getting some help regarding a project.
मेरे पापा ने तीन बार मना कर दिया है, पर मैं अभी भी उनके पीछे पड़ा हुआ हूँ।
Mere papa ne teen baar mna kar diya hai, par mainabhi bhi unke piche pada hua
hoon.
My father has denied me permission thrice, but I’m still after him.
जब उस लड़के ने पत्थर मारा तो कु त्ते उसके पीछे पड़ गए।
Jab us ladke ne pathar maara to kutte uske piche pad gaye.
The dogs were after the boy when he threw stone at them.
पुलिस चोर के पीछे पड़ी थी।
Police chor ke piche padi thi.
The police were after the thief.

By
द्वारा (In passive voice)
अपराधियों को पुलिस द्वारा रोका गया।
Apradhiyon ko police dwara roka gaya.
Criminals were stopped by the police.
उपहार उसकी बहन द्वारा भेजा गया था।
Uphar uski behen dwara bheja gaya tha.
The gift had been sent by his sister.
यह कविता शेक्सपियर द्वारा लिखी गयी थी।
Yeh kavita shakespeare dwara likhi gayi thi.
The poem had been written by Shakespeare.
घर की सफाई नौकर द्वारा की जा चुकी है।
Ghar ki safai naukar dwara ki ja chuki hai.
The house has been cleaned by the servant.
यह तस्वीर एक अनजान व्यक्ति ने ली।
Yeh tasveer ek anjaan vyakti ne li.
The picture was taken by a stranger
से – (किसी वाहन से सफर करना – To travel by some vehicle)
मैंने हवाईजहाज से यात्रा की।
Maine hawaijahaj se yatra ki.
I travelled by Aeroplane.
वो शाम की फ्लाइट से आ रहे हैं।
Wo shaam ki flite se aa rahe hain.
They are coming by evening flight.
गरीब को हवाईजहाज से सफर करने की सौभाग्य नहीं है।
Gareeb ko hawaijahaj se safar kane ka saubhagya nahi hai.
The poor don’t have the privilege to travel by aeroplane.
उसकी बेटी बस से स्कू ल जाती है।
Uski beti bus se skool jaati hai.
His daughter goes to school by bus.
मैं लोकल ट्रेन से आऊं गा।
Main local train se aaunga.
I’ll come by the local train.
तक – (किसी समय तक) (With time)
मैं 7 बजे तक निकल जाउं गी।
Main 7 baje tak nikal jaungi.
I will leave by 7 o’clock.
हम शाम तक ये काम खत्म कर देंगे।
Ham shaam tak ye kaam khatm kar denge.
We will complete this task by the evening.
मैं बारह बजे तक आने की कोशिश करूँ गा।
Main barah baje tak aane ki koshish karunga.
I’ll try to reach by 12 pm.
वह कल तक चेन्नई पहुँच जाएगी।
Wah kal tak chennai jayegi.
She will reach Chennai by tomorrow.
सुबह तक काम ख़त्म करो।
Subah tak kaam khatm karo.
Finish the work by early morning.
बगल में
“बगल में” के लिए by के अलावा beside, next to, adjacent भी प्रयोग करते
हैं जो आप आगे पढेगे।
मैं उसके बगल में खड़ा था।
Main uske bagal me khada tha.
I was standing by her.
वह मेरे बगल में खड़ी थी।
Wah mere bagal me khadi thi.
She was standing by me.
रोहन बच्चे के बगल में खड़ा था।
Rohan bacche ke bagal mein khada tha.

Maine gend ko balle se maara.
I hit the ball with a bat.
उसने काले कलम से लेख लिखा।
Usne kaale kalam se lekh likha.
He wrote the article with a black pen.
सेना ने आतंकवादियों को मशीन गन से मारा।
Sena ne aatankvadiyon ko machine gun se maara.
The army killed terrorists with a machine gun.
वह काँटे चम्मच से मैग्गी खा रहा था।
Wah kaante chammach se maggi kha raha tha.
He was eating Maggi with a fork.
उसने अपनी आवाज़ से सबका दिल जीत लिया।
Usne apni aawaz se sabka dil jeet liya.
She won hearts with her voice.
साथ – (किसी चीज़/व्यक्ति के साथ {accompany someone or something})
वह इस मामले में नंदिनी के साथ है।
Wah is maamle mein nandini ke saath hai.
He is with Nandini in this matter.
हम आपके साथ रहेंगे।
Hum aapke saath rahenge.
We will be/stay with you.
मेरी माँ अपने ऑफिस लैपटॉप ले के गयी।
Meri maa apne aufis laptop leke gaye.
My mother went to her office with a laptop.
मैं अपना पूरा जीवन तुम्हारे साथ बिताना चाहती हूँ।
Main apna pura jeevan tumhare saath bitana chaahti hoon.
I want to spend my entire life with you.
वह मेरे साथ बहस कर रही है।
Wah mere saath bahas kar rahi hai.
She is arguing with me.

At
किसी निश्चित समय पर (On a definite point of time)
वो 5 बजे पैदा हुआ था।
Wo 5 baje paida hua tha.
He was born at 5.
वह स्कू ल 7 बजे आएगी।
Wah skool 7 baje aayegi.
She will come to school at 7 AM.
दुकान पर ठीक 9 बजे पहुँच जाना।
Dukan par theek 9 baje pahunch jaana.
Reach the Shop at sharp 9 am.
कोशिश करना की मुझसे 5 बजे मिलो।
Koshish karna ki mujh se 5 baje milo.
Try to meet me at 5 pm.
(में/पर) छोटी जगह के साथ (with small places)
वह एक कै फ़े में मिले।
Wah ek kaife mein mile.
They met at a cafe.
वह मेरा मेट्रो में इंतज़ार कर रही थी।
Wah mera metro ke pas intezaar kar rahi thi.
She was waiting for me at the metro.
विनोद एक कारखाने में काम करता है।
Vinod ek karkhane mein kaam karta hai.
Vinod works at/in a factory. {We can also use “in” here because a factory is an
enclosed cover structure}
आज रात मेरे घर पे खाने का प्रोग्राम बनाते हैं।
Aaj raat mere ghar pe khane ka program banate hain.
Let’s plan a dinner tonight at my place.
मैं तुम्हारा स्वागत करने के लिए हवाईअड्डे पे रहूँगा।
Main tumhare swagat karne ke liye hawaiadde pe rahunga.
I’ll be welcoming you at the airport.
रात और दोपहर के साथ (With night/noon)
मैं रात में वहाँ था।
Main raat me wahan tha.
I was there at night.
मैं रात को खाना बनाऊं गा।
Main raat ko khana banaunga.
I’ll cook dinner at night.
मुझे दोपहर बारह बजे मिलो।
Mujhe dopahar barah baje milo.
Meet me at 12 noon.
वह के वल रात में ही पढ़ता है।
Wah raat me padhta hai.
He studies only at nights.
मूल्य बताने में (To tell the cost of something)
यह सब्ज़ी चालीस रूपए किलो में बिक रही है।
Yeh sabzi chaalis rupay kilo mein bik rahi hai.
This vegetable is selling at Rs. 40 per kg.
मैं आलू 30 रु किलो खरीद रहा हूँ ।
Main aloo 30 rupay kilo khareed raha hoon.
He is buying potatoes at Rs 30 per kg.
पेट्रोल इतने ज़्यादा दाम पर बिक रहा है।
Petrol itne zyada daam par bik raha hai.
The petrol is being sold at such a high rate.
विक्रे ता इस ज़मीन को खरीदने लायक दाम पे बेचेगा।
Vikreta is zameen ko khareedne layak daam pe bechega.
The vendor will sell this land at an affordable rate.
मैं इस सामान को सस्ते में लेके आऊं गा।
Main is samaan ko saste mein leke aaunga.
I’ll get this product at a cheap rate.

Through
से (किसी चीज़ के आर पार देखना {to see through some object}
चूहा छे द से चुपके से निकल रहा है।
Chooha ched se chupke se nikal rha hai.
The mouse is sneaking through the hole.
मैं खिड़की से देख सकता हूँ क्योंकि ये पारदर्शी है।
Main khidki se dekh skta hun kyunki vo pardarshi hai.
I can see through the window as it is transparent.
मैं इस पाइप में से तेरे को देख सकता हूँ।
Main iss pipe me se dekh skta hun.
I can see you through this pipe.
मैं खिड़की से झाँक रहा हूँ।
Main khidki se jhaank rha hun.
I am peeping through the window.
इस झरझरी दीवार से पानी जा रहा है।
Iss jhajhre deewar se paani ja rha hai.
The water is passing through this porous wall.
किसी ऐसी चीज से गुजरना जो ऊपर, नीचे या/और किनारों से बन्द हो (To move through a
structure, closed on top, bottom, and/or at the sides)
मैं एक गली से गुज़र रहा था।
Main ek gali se guzar raha tha.
I was passing through a streat.
हम भूमि-गत रास्ते से गये।
Hum bhoomigat raaste se gaye.
We went through the subway.
कार टनल से गुज़र रही है।
Car tunnel se guzar rhi hai.
The Car is passing through a tunnel.
हवाईजहाज पहाड़ों के बीच से गुज़र रहा था।
Hawaijahaj pahadon ke beech se guzar raha tha.
The airplane was going through the mountains.
Exception:
मैं मुश्किल वक़्त से गुज़रा हूँ।
Main mushkil waqt se guzara hoon.
I have gone through tough times.

Across
के पार (किसी चीज़ के पार {across something})
नदी के उस पार एक गाँव है।
Nadi ke uss paar ek gaanv hai.
There is a river across the village.
रोड के उस पार मेरी दुकान है।
Road ke uss paar meri dukan hai.
There is my shop across the road.
इस बाधा को पार करना बहुत कठिन है।
Iss badha ko paar karna bahut kathin hai.
It’s so difficult to go across this hurdle.
खेत के पार एक शहर बसा है।
Khet ke paar ek shahar bsa hai.
A city is established across this field.
पहाड़ के उस पार नदी बहती है।
Pahad ke uss paar nadi behti hai.
A river flows across the hills.

Beyond
के पार (जो दिख न रहा हो) – (very far, which is not visible)
इस घर के उस पार एक गुफा है।
Iss ghar ke uss paar ek gufa hai.
There is a house beyond this cave.
उस दीवार के उस पार क्या है?
Uss diwar ke uss paar kya hai?
What is there beyond that wall?
आसमान के उस पार क्या है?
Aasman ke uss paar kya hai?
What is beyond the sky?
क्या तुम कभी उन पहाड़ियों के उस पार गए हो?
Kya tum kabhi unn pahadiyon ke us par gaye ho?

इस जगह के उस पार कु छ दिखाई नहीं देगा।
Iss jagah ke uss paar kuch dikhayi nahi dega.
There is nothing visible beyond this point.
ऐसी चीज़ के पार जिसे छू या देख नहीं सकते (beyond something that is
abstract; neither can be touched nor seen)
यह विज्ञान से परे है। {यानि विज्ञान के पास भी इसका जवाब नहीं है}
Yeh vigyaan se pare hai. {Yaani vigyaan ke paas bhi iska jawab nahi hai.}
This is something beyond science.
ख़ुशी के पार कु छ नहीं है या ख़ुशी के बराबर कु छ नहीं है।
Khushi ke paar kuch nhi hai ya khushi ke barabar kuch nhi hai.
There is nothing beyond happiness.
यह मेरी पहुँच में नहीं है।
Yeh meri pahunch me nahi hai.
This is beyond my reach.
यह मेरी कल्पना से परे है।
Yeh meri kalpana se pare hai.
This is beyond my imagination.
माँ से रिश्ता बाकी सब चीज़ों से बढकर होता है।
Maa se rishta baki sb chizon se badhkar hota hai.
The relationship with the mother is beyond all other things.

विया/वाया (के रास्ते, से, के माध्यम से)
