Community Centre Named
PULTENEYTOWN Peoples Project is pleased to announce that the new Community has been named and looks set to open earlier than expected. The Centre, being built on Huddart Street, Wick, will be called Pulteneytown Centre and should now be open to the whole community in January 2012. Each room in the Centre will be named after local streets, giving the building a truly Wick feeling. Recently Pulteneytown Centre has been making rapid progress with local contractors painting and decorating the interiors. Carpets have been installed in the rooms and carefully selected colour schemes are being applied to give each part of the building a unique, pleasing appearance. PPP staff are in the final stages of selecting furniture for the different projects and areas which will ensure comfortable seating and practical work stations for the arts and crafts classes, computer groups, classrooms, office spaces and youth facilities. On the exterior of the building work is currently underway putting some final pipes and drainage at the front of the Centre. This area will also become the car park which will be created towards the end of the construction period. With Pulteneytown Centre so close to completion PPP has started advertising job vacancies. Currently jobs advertised include head chef/cook for the restaurant and two youth worker positions where the successful candidates will help in fun learning activities such as assisting with adventure trips, running activity groups, and also helping out with younger children during day care and after school care. Future jobs to be advertised within the coming weeks include crche workers for Pulteneytown Centres childcare facilities. You can find all PPPs job vacancies on the website: http://www.pulteneytownpeoplesproject.org.uk/SituationsVacant.html. When Pulteneytown Centre opens in January 2012 there will be lots of...

...activities all members of the public can access from the first day. There will be all-day childcare where children can play with toys, games and enjoy themselves in the soft play area, supervised by fully trained and qualified staff, while parents enjoy the other features of the Centre. These other features include the stylish cafe/restaurant which will be open to everyone to purchase coffee, tea and delicious snacks and meals. From the cafe parents will be able to see how much fun their children are having via a window into the soft play. There will also be computer classes where skills such as word processing, sending emails, PowerPoint presentations and databases will all be taught, as well as a dedicated arts and crafts room where Caithness talented artists and eager beginners can perfect their art forms. PPP will also be running a training kitchen which will give budding chefs the opportunity to work on their dishes and try selling their food in the restaurant downstairs. Young adults will also be able to socialise and catch up with friends in the cafe/restaurant before heading to the band practice room or youth drop -in where they can play pool, games consoles or relax in comfy seats. With designing assistance from PPPs Youth Working Group the youth facilities will be exactly what local young adults want. Furthermore, PPP has already started taking bookings for the different function rooms, office spaces and large main hall. The main hall, with its 120 fold away bleacher seating, will be perfect for large conferences or sporting events, while there is a function room which will be ideal for business meetings or community groups. Office spaces are available to rent by local businesses who feel the need for their own office from where to manage their company. Those renting the offices will be able to use the printer/ photocopier room as well as Pulteneytown Centres other amenities such as the cafe/restaurant and meeting/function rooms. To enquire about booking the rooms, hall or offices please phone the PPP office on 01955 606950.

Football Trip
THE score may have been a one-all draw, but Caley Thistle made it a memorable Saturday for the children of MAASK. As part of a promotion to get more children interested in the game, Inverness Caledonian Thistle awarded PPP with 13 free tickets to their latest match against Hearts, and the children from MAASK were delighted at the chance to see some of the Scottish Premier Leagues finest players. Many of the children had never been to a professional football game before and were looking forward not only to seeing a great match but also a trip to Inverness. Leaving early on Saturday, September 10 the MAASK children and PPP staff members travelled by minibus first to Whin Park, near Inverness, to stretch their legs and have fun playing on the swing park, climbing frames and enjoy an ice cream. Continuing on their journey, the excited group arrived at Caley Thistles ground, Caledonian Stadium, and settled down to watch the match. A goalkeeper error gave Super Caley an early lead in the second half, but the home side couldnt hold on to win three points and a Hearts equaliser ensured no team went home empty handed. The children all said they had a wonderful day and hope they can go again soon to watch another game.

Youth Working Group

BACK from their first outing, the newly formed PPP Youth Working Group managed to visit two excellent community projects, walked up a gorge, scaled some waterfalls and discussed amazing ideas on youth projects. The members of the Committee; Kirsty MacNab, Beth Macaulay, Chloe Macaulay, Liam McAdie, Roddy Bain, Liam Banks, Sophie Sutherland and Caitlin Sutherland, along with PPP staff members Lynn Bain and Leona MacNab, went on Friday September 2 to visit PPPs Community Centre being built on Huddart Street where they had a guided tour and generated some ideas on what the finished Centre would have and require. Setting off the next day the Working Group travelled by mini-bus south through Caithness and Sutherland, arriving at the Elgin Youth Cafe where they took close notice of how they ran their successful youth discos. The Group were also impressed by the facilities made available on wet days, giving young people somewhere to go during bad weather. Moving on, there was a brief stop-off at a music festival in Nairn, but, the music not being to everyones taste meant they didnt stay long! Next was the Nairn Community Centre where the friendly staff supplied tea, biscuits and information on how they run their building. After such a long day the Working Group was glad to reach their final destination Badaguish Activity Centre. Staying in a lodge they enjoyed Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner and discussed all they had discovered throughout the day. The following morning everyone donned wetsuits and braved the cold to take part in gorge walking. Scaling heights, swimming in pools and climbing waterfalls, everyone had lots of fun but were glad to have a warm shower afterwards! It wasnt until late on Sunday night that everyone arrived back in Wick. The Youth Working Groups trip was a huge success and the members have been busy generating new ideas for PPPs Community Centre. Some of these ideas include installing CCTV, late opening times on Fridays and Saturdays to give young teenagers something to do, purchasing cinema equipment, creating a PPP mascot and even making a mirror room! The Group has been looking at what rules should be in place to ensure everything runs smoothly such as starting membership programmes and ways to prevent bullying and fighting. With the help of the Youth Working Group PPPs Community Centre looks set to be the ideal place for Wicks young people.

MAASK October Club

THE last MAASK holiday club of the year is going to be very special with trips, parties, fun and games. Starting on October 10 until October 14 the holiday club is for children of primary school age. Taking place in South School the club is always extremely popular due to the fantastic range of activities the children take part in. This October the children have planned trips to the Pulteney Distillery where they will get to take the tour; a visit to the excellent Balmore Animal Centre; Ormlie Park for fun and games; pool and badminton tournaments; as well as a spooky Halloween party where the children can dress up in scary costumes and take part in some themed competitions and games. When not out seeing special parts of Caithness the holiday club will have lots of board games, toys, sports and competitions for the children to enjoy. From 9-5pm each day, the holiday club costs 9 for a full day or 6 for a half day which includes a pick-up and drop-off service. With the opening of the new Community Centre the Easter, Summer and October holiday clubs will be hosted in the bespoke, ultra modern childcare section where the children will have access to a wide range of toys, games and activities as well as the soft play area and outdoor play space. With so much more for the children to do the future holiday clubs are sure to be the best ones yet.
