ABSTRACT

Organic farming is one of the fastest growing sectors of

agricultural production. Considering the potential
environment benefits of organic production and its
compatibility with integrated approaches to rural
development, organic farming is considered as a
development vehicle of developing countries like India in
particular. In organic farming it supports the healthy soil, no
GMOs is used, bio fertilizers were created and no chemicals
are used in it. So it results in organic food products which
promotes healthy and sustainable lifestyle In humans.
I started organic farming at the
month of April last. I collected seeds from the near by krishi
bhavan. Grow bags were used for farming. The location
choose for farming prevailed a weather condition of 25-29”
C temperature. The seeds selected for farming were
Spinach, Chilly, bitter gourd, Lady’s finger and long bean.
The soil were mixed through Basel application and at last
top dressed with fertilizers were done after sowing. Bio
fertilizers were homemade. Watering was done about two
times a day as it required a moist soil. At the month of May
the heavy rainfall resulted in the slow growth of plants due
to the reduction in soil fertility. After taking utmost care and
time plants harvested on last week of July. It was a special
experience which lead to learn more about the environment.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Organic farming is a production system which avoids

or largely excludes the use of synthetically
compounded compound fertilizers, pesticides,
growth regulator, genetically modified organism and
livestock food additives. To the maximum extend
possible organic farming system rely upon crop
rotations, use of crop residues, animal manure, green
manure, legumes, off farm organic wastes, bio
fertilizers, mechanical cultivation mineral bearing
rocks and aspects of biological controls to maintain
soil productivity and tilth to supply plant nutrients
and to control insects, weeds and other pets. Organic
methods can increase farm productivity, repair
decades of environmental damage and knit small
farm families into more sustainable distribution
networks leading to improved food security. If they
organize themselves in production, certification and
marketing organic farming is one way to promote
either self Suffiency or food security. Use of massive
Inputs of chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides
poisons the land and heavily. The after effects of this
e server environmental consequences including the
loss of topsoil, decrease in soil fertility. Surface and
ground water contamination and loss of genetic
diversity.
CHAPTER 2 MATERIALS &METHODS
Organic farming works in harmony with nature
rather than against it. This involves using
techniques to achieve good crop yields without
harming the natural environment or the people who
lived and worked on it. The materials and methods
that I used for my cultivation are as follows;

Materials used:
For my project I purchased seeds, grow bags and
and some organic fertilizers.
1. Grow bags
2. 5 varieties of seeds
3. A small shovel
4. Dried coconut husk
5. Ground nut cake and need cake

Seed varieties:
1. Bitter gourd
2. Long beans
3. Chilly
4. Spinach 5. Lady’s finger

All these seeds were cultivated in the month of

April. Soil and fertilizers were added according to
the growth of the plants. Because of the
unexpected change in the weather and due to
heavy rainfall some of the plants were destroyed
but (bitter gourd , long beans, Chilly, Spinach and
lady’s finger) were saved.

Unexpected weather conditions

Even though the project was started in April and all
these seeds were planted in that month and
unexpected heavy rain came and washed off all
the hardwork. Some totally destroyed but some of
the plants were saved. This heavy rainfall
continued for few days. Plants which were in the
growbags were kept under the roof so it was
protected from rainfall.
Thus saved the plants from unexpected rainfall.
How fertilizers are used

Fertilizers like dried cow dung powder, need cake

powder, coconut husk(soaked in water) are mixed
thoroughly in soil with some water and filled in
each grow bags. As mentioned before according
to the growth of plants these fertilizers are added
accordingly. As plants started to germinate
wooden ashes were used and soil were mixed
along with that. All these methods helped my
plants to grew well.

Water management
I watered all the plants once in a day using spray
bottle so that excess water doesn’t destroy the
plant. Always paid attention to make soil moist
and during rainfall I didn’t watered plants because
there will be enough water content in the soil.
First day of harvesting
By the end of July we did our first harvesting.
Chilly
Spinach and long beans was first to bloom and
harvest . On subsequent months we were able to
harvest almost all plants and was able to share my
hardwork and happiness with family members.
CHAPTER 3 OBSERVATION AND
DATA COLLECTION

Starting from the sowing of seeds all the plants were

given due importance and observation. After sowing
within 4-5 days all the seeds started to sprout. From
that day onwards all the seeds were healthy and was
also growing very well. When the long bean started
to grow a support was given, so that the climbers
can grow very well. When the soil gets dry due to hot
weather, I tried to keep the soil moist by watering two
times a day.

DETAILED OBSERVATION

Day 4 (from the day of sowing): Chilly, long beans

and spinach started to sprout.
Day 7:sprouted seeds have small leaves now. It was
really good to see and also made me happy.
Day 13: since the seeds are growing well some of
the seeds were plucked and planted to ground from
the grow bags.
Day 29: All the plants has grown well now, for further
growth organic manure was used.
Day 34: climbers are coming well on long bean so
they were tied up to the sticks for support so that
they can grow well.
Day 63: took our first harvest.
Day 69: got harvest Chilly and spinach.
Day 81:All the plants are grown well. Got harvest for
almost all plants except bitter gourd.

CHAPTER 5 CONCLUSION

As being part of this project I on to many of the simple

factors in farming where as a student can give
contribution. And also I understood that how a
student can produce themselves , all the things they
needed by giving importance and working hard
