Abstract
This special issue presents new trends in computer architecture and in parallel and distributed systems. It is based on the best
papers of the 24th International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing, which was held in New
York, NY, USA on October 24-26, 2012 in the Columbia University. The authors were invited to provide extended versions of
the papers presented in the conference, taking into account suggestions by the double-blinded peer review process and comments
gathered during the conference.

1. Presentation and Background

This special issue presents leading edge developments in high performance applications, as well as the latest
trends in computer architecture and parallel and distributed technologies. It is based on extended, revised papers
from the 24th International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing (SBAC-PAD).
The authors were invited to provide extended versions of the papers presented in the conference, taking into account
suggestions by the double-blinded peer review process and comments gathered during the conference.
Contributions have been provided by Ramos and Bianchini, Jann et al., Meneses et al. and by Milanez et al.. The
covered topics include the following:

• improving performance of cooperative caches using popularity information

• automated and transparent OS crashes diagnosis and recovery in virtual environments
• an analytical model to understand and represent energy consumption of rollback-recovery mechanisms
• a new thread synchronizaton heuristic and memory coalescing for SPMD workloads

The 24th edition of the SBAC-PAD series has presented an overview of new developments, applications, and trends
in parallel and distributed computing technologies. Within this scope, the 24th edition invited authors to submet
manuscripts on these topics of interest: Application-specific systems; Benchmarking, performance measurements,
