The BWM Convention

6
BWM CONVENTION AT A
GLANCE

September, 2017: The IMO Ballast Water Management Convention

entered into force
→ All ships must treat their ballast water so the ocean's biodiversity is preserved and micro-
organisms as well as pathogens are removed or rendered harmless before the ballast water is
released into a new location.

= A certified Ballast Water Treatment System before Sept 2024

For existing ships (over 400 GT), retrofit is to be conducted at next IOPP Certificate renewal
(and prior to 08 Sept. 2024).

7
UV TECHNOLOGY FOR BWTS

Filter + UV treatment is the second most common technologies for Ballast Water Treatment Systems

UV systems are deemed relevant for any flowrate below 2000 m3/h +/-

Key advantages VS other technologies: lower CAPEX, cost effective installation, easy to operate, small
footprint and sustainable solution.

Market studies show about one third of the eligible vessels are not retrofitted yet, with a noticeable
prominence of medium/small size vessels.

Reliability and Performance
In Facts

20
RELIABILITY

System fully manufactured and assembled in an ISO 9001 certified BIO-UV Group factory.

Few examples of components origin :

Components Main supplier Maker HQed in :

UV Lamps and UV Sensors ETA Plus Germany
Filter Filtrex / Hydac Italy / Germany
Couplings Victaulic USA
Piping Qualitub France
Flowmeter Krohne Germany
Pumps Calpeda Italy
Screens Siemens Germany

Titanium-made reactors are assembled and welded by BIO-UV Group in France.

21
PERFORMANCE

High UV dose in order to cope at best with waters charged with particles or chemical residuals.

Illustrated by :

• Short holding times

IMO waters : 0 hrs all waters
US waters : 0 hrs fresh water / 17 hrs brakish / 24 hrs
(0 hrs all waters with Hydac filters)

• IMO Type Approval tests results

Show capability to handle waters down to 42% UV-Transmittance

22
Operation, Maintenance &
Spare Parts

23
BIO-SEA SYSTEM
OPERATIONS

• Operation from Main Control Panel + Remote control panels in options

• All parameters (such as alarm levels) set at commissioning.

• Minimum integration : on/off position contacts with ballast pumps and by-pass valve.
Further, integration to AMS in option.

24
BIO-SEA SYSTEM
OPERATIONS

Maintenance
General

• Scheduled Maintenance under one year is visual / tightening checks mainly.

Yearly mechanical checks : filter and UV reactor

• Sensors calibration is checked during the recommended annual audit

25
BIO-SEA SYSTEM
OPERATIONS

Quartz Sleeve Cleaning

Quartz sleeve can be cleaned without dismounting the UV reactor thanks to the provided manual CIP
(cleaning in place) devise.

26
BIO-SEA SYSTEM
OPERATIONS

Maintenance

• Expected lamps lifespan is 5000 hrs of operation.

• Manual indicates preventive renewal at 3000 hrs, but replacement is needed as per UV lamp wear
(performance loss not solved by cleaning or quartz sleeve renewal)

• It is recommended to keep one UV lamp (and one quartz sleeve) onboard as safety spare.

• UV reactor dismounting procedure is part of the one-day recommended crew training, done at
commissioning.
