Job Profile
Under direction of the Highway Maintenance Lead/Lead Worker and/or Field Technician, monthly and hourly highway maintainers perform a variety of seasonal tasks involved in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features; participate in signing and pavement marking operations. These employees must possess a valid commercial drivers license, Class A with endorsements of N (Tankers) or X (Tankers with hazardous materials) and non-restrictive air brakes in order to operate vehicles including maintenance trucks, pavement marking equipment, tractors, mowing machines, snow plows, salt spreaders and equipment including compressors, jack hammers and generators. They wash, grease and conduct minor repairs and preventative activities of these vehicles and equipment. Monthly and hourly highway maintainers perform labor relating to maintenance of roadways and repair of bridges; repair, replace and patch concrete, bituminous and other roadway surfaces; load/ unload trucks; spread salt, sand, gravel and asphalt; fill in shoulder ruts; clean and repair bridges, perform bridge deck patching and minor structural repairs; fill, fire and operate asphalt kettles; fill pavement cracks and joints; direct and control traffic during road maintenance operations. During snow and ice conditions, employees operate snow plows and spread salt and sand; plow and remove snow; promptly respond to emergency weather situations to inspect roadways and remove hazardous materials/obstacles. They also perform labor relating to the maintenance of roadside and right-of-way; cut grass, weeds and brush; repair and clean culverts, drains, storm sewers, ditches and other drainage facilities; clean, repair and erect signs; dig post holes, set or pull posts; repair guardrails and fence; chip, seal and clean bridges; clean and paint bridge bearings; paint curbs; plant, trim and fertilize trees and shrubbery.
These employees perform routine housekeeping duties at headquarters; clean, maintain stockpiles of materials and perform other tasks associated with the general care of headquarters; conduct normal security measures at the maintenance site headquarters; remove and dispose of trash, dead animals and other debris along highways; maintain on-the-job records.
