We also use past continuous form for an ongoing action in the past

Complete the text with the Past Simple or Past Continuous of the verbs in

It was raining (rain) very hard when the bus left (leave) the school. When we got
(get) home, my Aunt Carol and Uncle Arthur were waiting (wait) for us. They
told (tell) us to run into their basement. When Iooked (look) up the road, I saw

towards the shelter. But it was too late. The tornado was passing (pass) over us
