DGR AWARENESS :

What are Dangerous Goods ?

By formal definition, Dangerous Goods are "articles or substances which are capable of
posing a significant risk to health, safety or to property when transported by air and which
are classified according to the Regulations".

The key word here is "when transported by air". This is because the characteristics of air
transport (vibration, pressure and temperature changes) can have such an effect on
articles, substances and packaging so as to pose a risk to the aircraft and its passengers
and crew, that may not be apparent on the ground.

If there is a risk why do we allow Dangerous Goods to be transported at all ?

There is a commercial demand for many products classified as Dangerous Goods, such as
paints and batteries and especially time sensitive ones like radio-isotopes for medical
treatment, and goods that must be kept refrigerated for a considerable time. Sometimes
Air Transport is the only way to reach remote places in a short time.

Some Dangerous goods are even required on an Aircraft for its airworthiness. For example,
aircraft fuel, batteries, fire extinguishers and life rafts. Duty free goods such as perfumes
and alcoholic beverages are needed for cabin service during flight.

Note : Be very careful while handling any shipment that is labeled with a Dangerous Goods
Marking.

Any type of incident/accident involving dangerous goods must be reported, irrespective of

whether dangerous goods are loaded in cargo, mail or baggage.

Handling of Dangerous Goods

The person responsible for loading ULDs/ Dangerous goods shall inspect for parcel leakage/damage. If
leakage/damage is noticed, such goods shall not be loaded on to the Aircraft and if already loaded, such
shipment shall be removed from the aircraft.

While unloading of ULDs/ Dangerous Goods, if leakages/damages to the package are noticed, such
discrepancies shall be brought to the attention of Cargo/Engineering Personnel and customer airline.

For aircraft that is already contaminated by a shipment of damaged or leaking dangerous good, Air India
Engineering Department / customer airline will be informed to take appropriate action.
