OSHA
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970
Certain purchasers of our products may be subject to the requirements and standards
of the William‑Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which prescribes
standards for use of appurtenances of our manufacture, such as handrails, platforms,
stairways, fixed ladders, ladder cages, and guard rails. (Occupational Safety and Health
Standards Section 1910.21 through 1910.32). Before installing these devices, familiarize
yourself with the above Federal Standards.
At the time of manufacture, these optional items conform to applicable standards.
Global Industries Inc. assumes no liability with respect to proper construction,

TOWER CONSTRUCTION SAFETY ISSUES

Foundation and anchoring are of critical importance to Brownie Towers. If you require
guidelines for constructing foundations in accordance with the soil conditions and local
construction codes in your area, contact a consulting engineer. Brownie Systems will
supply tower loading calculations to your engineer to aid in designing the foundation.
When using a crane, stack no more than one or two pre-assembled tower sections at a
time.
When adding additional equipment not previously accounted for, considerable wind load
may be added to the tower. Be sure that your Brownie Tower is designed and staged for
stairs, all equipment, and any future additions. If you are uncertain, contact the factory
 before installing the tower.
Contact the factory with any Tower, Tower Stairway, Tower Ladder, and Tower Platform
construction or assembly problems.

WARNING! This page includes special instructions for ALL Galvanized-

Hot-dipped Towers. These instructions must be strictly adhered to at all Tower
Top Terminations for these towers.

11
WARNING! ALL Galvanized - Hot dipped Towers require that Tower Top
Plates be installed at the top terminating ends of each tower column. The
installation of these plates will prevent water from entering and pooling in
tower columns. If any water was allowed to pool inside of the tower columns,
the water could freeze and cause the tower column to split which could result
in structural failure of the tower.

4 4 Foundation Considerations
FOUNDATION NOTES
The foundation and anchoring are critical on all Tower structures. Variables such as soil
conditions, compactness and layering of the soil, water table, concrete quality, spacing
and quality of rebar and other factors must be taken into account when designing and
costing your foundation. You will also need to take local building codes into account.
12 Brownie Systems does not design foundations, nor is Brownie Systems or Global
Industries, Inc. responsible for foundations or the anchoring of a tower to the foundation.
An engineer should be consulted to design your foundation to meet requirements
dictated by the soil conditions and building codes in your area. Brownie Systems
will provide your design engineer with additional information relating to the structural
characteristics of the tower. This information will include:
• The dead load of the tower
• The compression per column / uplift per column
• The torque at foundation (over turn moment)
• The horizontal shear on the whole tower
The center-to-center measurements of the Standard Brownie Towers are on page 14
of this manual. The recommended minimum tower foundation attachment requirements
are on the next page.
Phone: 1-800-228-4285
Fax: 1-308-382-6954

Important Note: Develop a layout plan of the tower, tower accessories

and auxiliary equipment and then build the tower foundation in proper accordance
with the layout plan.

Important Note: When designing a foundation for your Brownie Tower, you
should plan for additions to your tower such as stairs before you pour the foundation.
If Tower stairs are to be installed a concrete pad should be poured in the proper
corner at the same time as the foundation is poured. See page 15.

12 Leg & Scale Towers 4000023 9-07

4 Foundation Considerations

Minimum Foundation Connection

The following are minimum recommendations and are primarily a guide for
bidding purposes only.
Fabricating Foundation Plates: Each tower column of the base stage should rest on
a foundation plate with four holes drilled 2” in from the two edges of each corner of the
plate to accommodate anchoring rods. Towers with base stages 0, 1, 2, and 3 require a
minimum of a 12” x 12” x 1 1/2” A-36 steel foundation plate. Towers with base stages 4,
5, and 6 require a minimum of a 18” x 18” x 2” A-36 steel foundation plate. Holes drilled
in these plates should be drilled 3” in from the edges of each corner and these holes 13
should be 1/6” larger than the cold rolled anchor rods that will later be inserted into them.
The bottom of the foundation plate must fully contact the concrete foundation.

WARNING! Towers with base stages 4, 5, and 6 require at least a

18” x 18” x 2” A-36 steel foundation plate.

WARNING! Design your foundation in accordance with local codes

and with respect to local soil conditions. Contact a consulting engineer for
specific guidelines.

Anchoring Rod Strength: Using four rods per plate, A307 minimum.
All rods should be 6’ long with 9” on one end turned into a “J” hook over a 3” radius.
Follow the suggestions on the page 15 to tie the rods into the foundation.

DISTINGUISH STAGES BEFORE ASSEMBLY
Brownie Leg and Scale Towers are strength staged towers using up to eight different
stages. The stages are numbered with dots or weld bumps located between the bracing
ears at both ends of the 4” O.D. vertical columns. The lightest stage 0 has no dots; stage
1 has one dot; stage 2 has two dots; etc. (see the figure on this page). The strongest
16 or heaviest sections for your tower are the staged sections with the greatest number of
dots. The heaviest rated sections make up the lower sections of the tower. The rest of
the sections are assembled in numerical sequence in between.

WARNING! Be sure to follow the specific instructions throughout this

manual which correspond with the staging of your tower!

Note: On 2’ x 4’, 2’ x 6’, 2’ x 8’, 2’ x 10’ and 2’ x 12’ towers, the 2’ side comes as a
single welded unit with no horizontal or diagonal braces to bolt onto that side. Weld
bumps next to bracing ears on the columns identify the stage (see pages 16 - 17).

PREASSEMBLY OF TOWER STAGES

Each tower section should be pre-assembled on relatively level ground according to the
diagrams in figure a on the next page and bolted together finger tight only. The heaviest
stages of your tower sections will be based sections of the tower. Assemble the heaviest
sections first. If access bracing is to be installed at the base of the tower see pages
18 23 - 33 for stages 0 through 3 and pages 39 - 40 for stages 4 through 6.
Bolting Standard Bracing. Assemble the bracing as shown on the next page. One
diagonal brace should be bolted to the inside of the bracing ears and one diagonal
should be bolted to the outside of the bracing ears. Note the off-centered end as shown
on page 20. On any particular bracing ear, the horizontal brace should be bolted to
the side of the bracing ear opposite of the diagonal brace. Do not bolt the diagonal and
horizontal brace to the same side of the bracing ear (see the figure on the next page).
All tower diagonal (X) braces are bolted together through the center holes where the
braces cross (figure a, detail B on the next page). Use a 7/16” x 5” grade 2 bolt. During
pre‑assembly, finger tighten only.
Stage 3 Sections: Columns are marked with (3) weld bumps. These sections require
the use of 2 3/8” O.D. diagonal and horizontal braces. The 2 3/8” O.D. diagonal
braces have reinforcing plates welded on each end: 4’ - 12’ Towers ONLY (figure a).
The provided 7/8” x 3” grade 5 (or greater) bolts, lock washers and nuts must be used
to bolt the braces together with the column ears.
Stage 2 Sections: Columns are marked with (2) weld bumps. These sections require
the use of 2 3/8” O.D. horizontal and diagonal braces with plain ends (no plates
added). The provided 7/8” x 2 1/2” grade 5 (or greater) bolts, lock washers, and nuts
must be used to bolt braces the together with the column ears.
Stage 1 Sections: Columns are marked with (1) weld bump. These sections require
the use of 2” O.D. horizontal and diagonal braces. The provided 3/4” x 2 1/2” grade
5 (or greater) bolts, lock washers, and nuts must be used to bolt the braces together
with the column ears.
Stage 0 Sections: Columns have no weld bumps. These are the lightest sections of
the tower and will always be the upper sections of the tower. They use 2” diagonal
and horizontal tubes. The provided 3/4” x 2 1/2” grade 5 bolts (or greater) must be
used to bolt the braces together with the column ears.

NOTE: STAGE 3 DIAGONALS (4’ - 12’ ONLY)

14’ & 16’ stage 3 diagonals reinforcing angle
will not have a reinforcement
plate welded on to the
brace ends.

Base Stage to Foundation Connection

Assuming that you have assembled all of the tower sections at the same time, you are
now ready to set the base section of the tower onto the foundation plates. Remember,
the heaviest staged section will be the base of the tower.

1 Center the tower base stage on the foundation plates.

2 If necessary, shim between the column plates and the foundation plates to plum and
21
level the tower.

3 Tighten all the bracing connections at tower ears and diagonal intersections. Torque
values are provided in the table on page 10 of this manual.

4 Weld the tower column base plates to the foundation plates, using a 1/2” thick throat,
fillet weld. The base plates of tower stages 0 through 3 are 1/2” thick. The weld is
required all the way around the base plates. Crown the fillet to achieve at least a 1/2”
thick weld. Fill all bolts holes in the base plates with weld to prevent water seepage.
Use 70xx or 80xx welding wire or welding rod for all welds. (Refer to page 38 for
stages 4 - 6).

WARNING! Foundation weldment is critical. Make sure that your welding

personnel are certified. Do not grind off welds to make them smooth.

Before building your Brownie Tower, be sure that it is properly staged for the load it
was designed to support. Also make certain that you have ordered the proper braces
to assure structural integrity. If you have any problems during construction or if you
have decided to add additional wind loading to the tower since the unit was ordered,
contact the factory immediately!

GLOBAL INDUSTRIES, INC. 6 Tower Section Assembly

Stacking Stages onto the Base Stage

After you have welded the base section of the tower to the foundation plates, you may
start stacking the tower. Using a crane, stack one or two pre-assembled tower sections
onto the anchored base section. Remember that the heavier or higher numbered
sections go at the bottom of the tower, while the lower numbered sections go higher up.
Bolt each staged section together at the corner column base plates using 5/8” x 2 1/2”
grade 5 (minimum) bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Torque all horizontal, diagonal and
corner column bolts according to the specifications found in the table on page 10.
22

WARNING! Internal Cross Bracing:

All Brownie support towers must be internally braced. Towers that have
no equipment installed inside of them should come equipped with internal
cross-bracing purchased from the factory. If you do not receive these
braces, please call the factory immediately. Never build a tower that is not
internally braced. Instructions for factory internal cross bracing can be
found on page 34 of this manual.

When installing a grain leg, assemble the elevator leg along with the tower, one or
two sections at a time. Using a crane, lower the sections into the anchored-and-bolted
tower sections after all bolts in the tower sections have been torqued to specs. The four
corners of the grain leg(s) MUST be tied to the corresponding corner columns of the
tower at least every 20 feet of rise. See Internal Cross Bracing for Elevator Legs on
page 36. This stabilizes both the elevator leg and the tower as well as squaring them
up. A minimum 2” angle iron or 3” channel iron is recommended to tie the leg to the
tower. Drill and bolt the iron stabilizers to the tower column splice plates using the grade
5 bolts provided or another grade 5 bolt of appropriate length. If bolting onto the splice
plate is not feasible, you may weld the stabilizers to the corner columns, but they must
be within 7” of the splice plates. Weld the other end of these stabilizer braces to an angle
iron collar around the leg or legs. If two legs are placed in the tower, tie them together
with a collar and brace the outside corners to the corresponding corner tower column. If
a grain leg is not built in conjunction with the tower, internal cross bracing must be added
to the inside of the tower at least every 20 feet for lateral stabilization. If the tower is to
support a scale, it must be cross-braced every 10 feet.
Adding a Stairway: If a tower stairway is to be installed on the tower, it should be
installed while the tower is being stacked. See the additional instructions enclosed for
installation of the improved stairway system.
Continue to construct the tower and elevator legs (if applicable) one or two sections at
a time, until the tower legs are completed. If you are installing a galvanized tower, you
must attach capping plates to each column splice located at the very top of the tower.
These are found with the column top plates hardware kit and attach using column splice
bolts, lock washers and nuts. Performing this step is required to prevent serious damage
caused by freezing water.

Regular Access Bracing
Access bracing is installed in a tower whenever a conveyor is installed through the
tower, or when the diagonal bracing may interfere with the proper placement of
spouting or other equipment. Access bracing is also used at the base of the tower
for access to clean out doors on the elevator legs, for conveyor access, or for control
room access.

ASSEMBLE ACCESS BRACING, AS SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION 7a

23
1 Fasten both ends of the horizontal access brace (the brace with Stages
the bracing ear plate in the center) to the opposite sides of the bracing ears on
tower columns. Use the correct size bolts, nuts, and lock washers (See the next 0-3
page for Stages 0 - 3 sizes).

2 Fasten one end of both diagonal braces to the bracing ear at the
center of the horizontal brace. Use a 3/4” x 3 1/2” grade 8 bolt, nut and lock washer
for Stages 0 and 1. Stage 2 and 3 require a 7/8” x 3 1/2” grade 8 bolt, nut and lock
washer. Be sure to fasten the diagonal access braces to opposing sides of the
bracing ear.

3 Fasten the other end of both diagonal braces and the bottom
standard horizontal brace to the bracing ears on the tower columns with the bolts,
lock washers, and nuts as follows. Use 3/4” x 3” grade 8 bolts, nuts and lock washers
on stages 0 - 1. Use 7/8” x 3” grade 8 bolts, nuts, and lock washers. Be sure to fasten
the diagonal access braces to opposing sides of the bracing ear.

4 Torque all bolts according to the specifications found in the table on page 10.
5 Check bolt grade. Due to redesign and the use of Grade 8 bolts, Access
braces no longer need welding. Please make sure you aren’t using lighter grade
bolts that are for use elsewhere on the tower. Welding is still required for “Z”, “K”,
“Diamond” Braces, as well as the 8x8 stages 5&6 access brace found on page 40.

6 For access bracing on base sections only: The bottom horizontal

brace on the base section of the tower may now be removed after construction if the
entire foundation is adequately tied together and well reinforced with reinforcing rods.
Replace and torque all bolts according to the specifications in the table on page 10.

WARNING! Brownie towers that have already been constructed can

also be retrofitted with access bracing. When ordering access bracing, please
specify what stages you are going to install the access bracing in. If you are
installing access bracing in an existing tower, you must do so on a calm day
and take proper precautions to keep the wind forces from shifting the tower.
Exchange braces one side at a time only!

Square Tower Double Access Bracing

Double access bracing is installed instead of single access bracing when more room is
required for ease of installation of spouting, cleaners, etc.

ACCESS BRACING INSTALLATION, SEE THE PREVIOUS 2 PAGES.

1 Fasten both ends of the top and bottom horizontal braces to the
bracing ears on the tower columns using the correct bolts, lock washers, and nuts.
Position each brace on the opposite side of the bracing ears (see page 20). See page
19 figure b. It indicates the correct hardware for these connection.
32
2 Fasten one end of both diagonal braces to the bracing ear at the center
of the top horizontal brace. These connection bolt together using a 3/4” x 3 1/2” grade
Stages 8 hex bolt, nut, and lock washer. Notice that the braces are fastened on opposite
0-3 sides of the bracing ear.

3 Fasten the other end of the diagonal braces to the tower column ears
using the correct bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Use 3/4” x 3” grade 8 bolts, lock
washers, and nuts for stages 0 and 1, use 7/8” x 3” grade 8 bolts, lock washers, and
nuts for stages 2 and 3.

4 Fasten the bottom two diagonal braces to the bracing ears on the lower
section of the columns using the correct bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Notice on the
diagram on the following page that the right bottom diagonal fastens to the outside of
the ear and the left diagonal fastens to the inside.

5 Fasten the other ends of the lower diagonal braces to the center
bracing ear on the lower horizontal brace using a 3/4” x 3 1/2” grade 8 hex bolt, lock
washer, and nut for Stages 0 & 1. Stages 2 & 3 require a 7/8” x 3 1/2” grade 8 hex bolt
lock washer, and nut. Braces fasten onto the opposite sides of the bracing ear.

6 Torque all bolts according to the table on page 10.

7 Check bolt grade. Due to the redesign and the use of grade 8 bolts, access
braces no longer need welding. Please make sure you aren’t using lighter grade bolts
used elsewhere in the tower. Welding is still required for “Z”, “K”, “Diamond” braces,
as well as the 8 x 8 stages 5 & 6 access bracing (found on page 40).

8 Make a 1/4” deep x 45° chamfered edge around the entire circumference
of the detail C base plates, where the columns bolt together (see figure a, detail c, on
the next page). Repeat the process on the other column.

9 Crown weld both Detail C tower column base plates around the
entire plate. Repeat the process on the other column.

WARNING! Double access requires special tower staging. Standard

staging may not be used. When ordering, specify double access braces and
the installation height.

Factory Internal Lateral Cross Bracing

Internal cross bracing must be installed in 20 foot increments before assembling
the next sections of the tower (every 10 feet for towers supporting a scale). This will
square up the tower and allow for easier assembly of the additional stages. Factory
standard internal cross braces are supplied for towers without grain legs or other
equipment installed inside. See page 36 for instructions explaining how to field
fabricate internal cross braces for towers with grain legs inside.
34 For internal cross bracing installation see figure a on the next page and the
instructions for proper installation given below.

INTERNAL CROSS BRACING INSTALLATION

1 Install the connector plates to the top of the column base plates at the section
column connections where cross bracing is required.

2 Install the first cross brace. Bolt the cross brace to the bottom of the connector
plates with grade 5 bolts, lock washers, and nuts. (Refer to page 38 at the bottom
of the page for stage 4 through 6 tower section bolt requirements.)
3 Install the next cross brace. Bolt the cross brace to the bottom of the connector
plates with grade 5 bolts, lock washers, and nuts. (Refer to page 38 at the bottom
of the page for bolt sizes on stage 4 through 6 tower sections.)

4 Connect braces together at the intersection point, with the appropriate grade 2
hex bolt, lock washer, and nut.

Grain Leg Tower Internal Cross Bracing

It is recommended that you assemble the elevator leg along with the tower. Assemble (2)
or (4) sections of elevator leg and, using a crane, lower the sections into the anchored
tower sections after all the bolts have been torqued to the specifications given in the
table on page 10.
Bracing the Grain Legs: The (4) corners of the grain leg must be tied to the
corresponding corner columns of the tower at least every 20 feet of rise to stabilize and
36 square the tower as well as the leg.

WARNING! Double access bracing requires special tower staging.

Standard staging may not be used. When ordering, specify double access
braces and the installation height.

Fabricating the braces: A minimum of 2” x 2” x 1/4” angle iron or 3” channel is

recommended.
Fastening the braces: The installer may drill and bolt these braces to the tower splices
using grade 5 bolts. Refer to page 38 for bolt sizes for stages 4 through 6 tower
sections. Alternatively, the braces may be welded to the tower columns near the splice
plates. Weld these braces to an angle iron or channel iron reinforcing collar around the
leg(s) which ties both trunks together.
Towers that have a grain leg centered in the tower: can be laterally cross braced in
a manner similar to that shown in figure a on the following page. Use at least a 2” x 2” x
1/4” angle iron or 3” channel iron and rigidly brace your legs into each of the four tower
columns. The elevator leg must be stabilized so that it does not rotate or swivel.
On Installations with (2) or more elevator legs in the tower, the installer must tie the
elevator legs together with a collar and rigidly brace that collar to the tower column splice
joints at 20 foot intervals as shown in figure b on the following page.
When installing elevator leg(s) not centered in the tower, the installer must laterally
tie the elevator legs together with a collar and brace at least every twenty feet using at
least six lateral horizontal braces as shown in figures b and c on the following page.

WARNING! If you have any problems with construction or if additional

wind loading will be added to the tower, contact the factory immediately!

38 and horizontal braces (2 1/2” pipe), using 1 x 3 1/2” grade 8 hex bolts, lock washers,
and nuts. The mid horizontal (2 3/8” O.D. tube) requires 7/8” x 2” grade 5 (minimum)
Stages
hex bolts, lock washers, and nuts. At the bracing intersections (figure a on the following
page, detail B), bolt braces together with 5/8” x 7” grade 2 (minimum) hex bolts, nuts and
4-6 lock washers. NOTE, the mid horizontal is positioned between the diagonal braces.

Setting Base Stages 4 - 6 on the Foundation

After the tower base section (the heaviest section) is assembled, you are ready to set
it onto the foundation plates. Follow the instructions on page 21, torquing the bolts
according to the table found on page 10.
Welding Requirements for stages 4, 5, and 6 are a 3/4” fillet weld all around the base
plate. Crown the weld. Fill all bolt holes with weld.

WARNING! The 4, 5, and 6 tower plates are made of T-1 material. Therefore
a low hydrogen welding rod must be used. This rod can be either E 70 xx or E
80 xx with the bead size as stated above. The first pass of weld should have short
weld beads alternated from side to side to eliminate warping.

Stacking onto a 4 - 6 Base Section

After the tower base section (the heaviest section) has been welded onto the foundation
plates, you are ready to stack the next pre-assembled sections into place. Follow the
general guidelines outlined on page 22. Bolt each staged section together, at the corner
column base plates and connector plates, using 1” x 4” grade 8 hex bolts, nuts and lock
washers. Torque all bolts to the specifications given in the table on page 10.

Note: Transition from Stage 4 to Stage 3 (or lower) requires a Stage 3 “Adapter”
section. Position columns in the adapter section with the three-dot end on top, and
the four-dot end on the bottom as shown in figure a on page 17.

Installing access bracing should be done while the tower is being constructed.

INSTALLING ACCESS BRACING

1 Use the standard hardware and three 1” x 3 1/2” grade 8 bolts, nuts and lock washers
for additional connections, assemble access bracing as shown in figure b on
the previous page. Do not bolt two bracing members to the same side of a bracing
ear. Instead, bolt one brace to the inside of the ear and one brace to the outside of
the ear.
40
2 Stack and/or install tower sections with access bracing as you would a standard
tower section (see page 38.)

3
Stages
After a tower section with access bracing is in place in the tower, torque all bracing
4-6 bolts according to the specifications in the table found on page 10.

4 Check the bolt grade. Due to redesign and the use of grade 8 bolts, access braces
no longer need welding. Please make sure you aren’t using lighter grade bolts that
are for use elsewhere in the tower. Welding is still required for “Z”, “K”, and “Diamond”
Braces, as well as the 8 x 8 Stages 5 & 6 Access Brace, which is to be done as
follows: Weld the ends of all braces where they contact the bracing ears using a
3/8” fillet weld. See figure b on page the previous page. Do not remove bolts, lock
washers, and nuts after welding.

WARNING! If access bracing is installed in the bottom section of the

tower, the bottom horizontal brace may be removed after the other braces are
welded into place. The bottom horizontal brace must not be removed from the
access bracing located in any other tower section!
