GENERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
This Brownie Systems Construction and Owners Manual is written to assist and
instruct those who are responsible for Tower, Tower Stairway, Tower Ladder,
Tower Platform, or Tower Accessory assembly, and for anyone using these
products once these products are assembled. Global Industries Inc. assumes no
liability with respect to proper assembly, installation, and inspection, or use of its
products established under applicable laws, all of which is the sole responsibility
of the purchaser and those doing the assembly work.
Appurtenances and the accessories manufactured by us for use with our products
conform only to applicable Federal or Safety Standards in effect at such time.
WARNING! Make sure that all persons within the work area on ladders,
lifts, crane lifts, scaffolds, or the like are secure and not in danger of falling!
Also make sure that the work surfaces are clean and free of clutter.
OSHA
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970
Certain purchasers of our products may be subject to the requirements and standards
of the William‑Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which prescribes
standards for use of appurtenances of our manufacture, such as handrails, platforms,
stairways, fixed ladders, ladder cages, and guard rails. (Occupational Safety and Health
Standards Section 1910.21 through 1910.32). Before installing these devices, familiarize
yourself with the above Federal Standards.
At the time of manufacture, these optional items conform to applicable standards.
Global Industries Inc. assumes no liability with respect to proper construction,
inspection, assembly, or use of its products under applicable laws, all of which is the sole
responsibility of the purchaser and those doing the assembly work.
A. When climbing or walking on towers, stairs, ladders, platforms, spanning structures,
catwalks, or trusses, take care not to fall from these structures. Common sense dictates
that such appurtenances should not be used when conditions such as rain or wind preclude
their safe use. Brownie Systems strongly recommends that optional climbing equipment be
purchased to meet the current specifications set forth by OSHA or ANSI whether the individual
operator is required by law to do so or not. A properly secured safety belt should be used at all
times when performing operations work or maintenance on Brownie Tower, Tower Stairway,
Tower Ladder, Tower Platform, or Tower Accessories.
B. Field modification of Tower, Tower Stairway, Tower Ladder, Tower Platform, or Tower
Accessories or any auxiliary components or equipment without the authorization of the
manufacturer may present unknown dangers to the operator and must be avoided.
WARNING! When setting the base stage of a tower onto the foundation
plates, weldment is critical. Make sure that welding personnel are certified.

WARNING! ALL Galvanized - Hot dipped Towers require that Tower Top
Plates be installed at the top terminating ends of each tower column. The
installation of these plates will prevent water from entering and pooling in
tower columns. If any water was allowed to pool inside of the tower columns,
the water could freeze and cause the tower column to split which could result
in structural failure of the tower.

4 4 Foundation Considerations
FOUNDATION NOTES
The foundation and anchoring are critical on all Tower structures. Variables such as soil
conditions, compactness and layering of the soil, water table, concrete quality, spacing
and quality of rebar and other factors must be taken into account when designing and
costing your foundation. You will also need to take local building codes into account.
12 Brownie Systems does not design foundations, nor is Brownie Systems or Global
Industries, Inc. responsible for foundations or the anchoring of a tower to the foundation.
An engineer should be consulted to design your foundation to meet requirements
dictated by the soil conditions and building codes in your area. Brownie Systems
will provide your design engineer with additional information relating to the structural
characteristics of the tower. This information will include:
• The dead load of the tower
• The compression per column / uplift per column
• The torque at foundation (over turn moment)
• The horizontal shear on the whole tower
The center-to-center measurements of the Standard Brownie Towers are on page 14
of this manual. The recommended minimum tower foundation attachment requirements
are on the next page.
Phone: 1-800-228-4285
Fax: 1-308-382-6954
Important Note: When designing a foundation for your Brownie Tower, you
should plan for additions to your tower such as stairs before you pour the foundation.
If Tower stairs are to be installed a concrete pad should be poured in the proper
corner at the same time as the foundation is poured. See page 15.
Anchoring Rod Strength: Using four rods per plate, A307 minimum.
All rods should be 6’ long with 9” on one end turned into a “J” hook over a 3” radius.
Follow the suggestions on the page 15 to tie the rods into the foundation.

5 5 Required Pre-Assembly
DISTINGUISH STAGES BEFORE ASSEMBLY
Brownie Leg and Scale Towers are strength staged towers using up to eight different
stages. The stages are numbered with dots or weld bumps located between the bracing
ears at both ends of the 4” O.D. vertical columns. The lightest stage 0 has no dots; stage
1 has one dot; stage 2 has two dots; etc. (see the figure on this page). The strongest
16 or heaviest sections for your tower are the staged sections with the greatest number of
dots. The heaviest rated sections make up the lower sections of the tower. The rest of
the sections are assembled in numerical sequence in between.

Note: On 2’ x 4’, 2’ x 6’, 2’ x 8’, 2’ x 10’ and 2’ x 12’ towers, the 2’ side comes as a
single welded unit with no horizontal or diagonal braces to bolt onto that side. Weld
bumps next to bracing ears on the columns identify the stage (see pages 16 - 17).
Note: Towers used inside grain piles are sometimes constructed differently from
other towers. In certain cases, a 4’ x 4’ grain pile tower may be installed using stage
1.5 sections which consist of a stage 1 column, stage 2 bracing, and 3/4” holes at
bracing connections.

Attachment of the bracing to the tower columns must follow the instructions below:
The diagonal brace ends attach to the same side of the column ears, the horizontal brace ends attach
to the opposite sides of the column ears. Attach the bracing so that the column ear is “sandwiched”
between the horizontal diagonal brace. NEVER bolt the bracing on the same side of a column ear. See
the supporting illustration above. Note the orientation of the bracing (section A - A). Position the brace so
that the flattened side of the brace is next to the column ear (the contact side).
4000023 8-02
2 If necessary, shim between the column plates and the foundation plates to plum and
21
level the tower.
3 Tighten all the bracing connections at tower ears and diagonal intersections. Torque
values are provided in the table on page 10 of this manual.
4 Weld the tower column base plates to the foundation plates, using a 1/2” thick throat,
fillet weld. The base plates of tower stages 0 through 3 are 1/2” thick. The weld is
required all the way around the base plates. Crown the fillet to achieve at least a 1/2”
thick weld. Fill all bolts holes in the base plates with weld to prevent water seepage.
Use 70xx or 80xx welding wire or welding rod for all welds. (Refer to page 38 for
stages 4 - 6).
Before building your Brownie Tower, be sure that it is properly staged for the load it
was designed to support. Also make certain that you have ordered the proper braces
to assure structural integrity. If you have any problems during construction or if you
have decided to add additional wind loading to the tower since the unit was ordered,
contact the factory immediately!
Phone: 1-800-228-4285
Fax: 1-308-382-6954
When installing a grain leg, assemble the elevator leg along with the tower, one or
two sections at a time. Using a crane, lower the sections into the anchored-and-bolted
tower sections after all bolts in the tower sections have been torqued to specs. The four
corners of the grain leg(s) MUST be tied to the corresponding corner columns of the
tower at least every 20 feet of rise. See Internal Cross Bracing for Elevator Legs on
page 36. This stabilizes both the elevator leg and the tower as well as squaring them
up. A minimum 2” angle iron or 3” channel iron is recommended to tie the leg to the
tower. Drill and bolt the iron stabilizers to the tower column splice plates using the grade
5 bolts provided or another grade 5 bolt of appropriate length. If bolting onto the splice
plate is not feasible, you may weld the stabilizers to the corner columns, but they must
be within 7” of the splice plates. Weld the other end of these stabilizer braces to an angle
iron collar around the leg or legs. If two legs are placed in the tower, tie them together
with a collar and brace the outside corners to the corresponding corner tower column. If
a grain leg is not built in conjunction with the tower, internal cross bracing must be added
to the inside of the tower at least every 20 feet for lateral stabilization. If the tower is to
support a scale, it must be cross-braced every 10 feet.
Adding a Stairway: If a tower stairway is to be installed on the tower, it should be
installed while the tower is being stacked. See the additional instructions enclosed for
installation of the improved stairway system.
Continue to construct the tower and elevator legs (if applicable) one or two sections at
a time, until the tower legs are completed. If you are installing a galvanized tower, you
must attach capping plates to each column splice located at the very top of the tower.
These are found with the column top plates hardware kit and attach using column splice
bolts, lock washers and nuts. Performing this step is required to prevent serious damage
caused by freezing water.
2 Fasten one end of both diagonal braces to the bracing ear at the
center of the horizontal brace. Use a 3/4” x 3 1/2” grade 8 bolt, nut and lock washer
for Stages 0 and 1. Stage 2 and 3 require a 7/8” x 3 1/2” grade 8 bolt, nut and lock
washer. Be sure to fasten the diagonal access braces to opposing sides of the
bracing ear.
3 Fasten the other end of both diagonal braces and the bottom
standard horizontal brace to the bracing ears on the tower columns with the bolts,
lock washers, and nuts as follows. Use 3/4” x 3” grade 8 bolts, nuts and lock washers
on stages 0 - 1. Use 7/8” x 3” grade 8 bolts, nuts, and lock washers. Be sure to fasten
the diagonal access braces to opposing sides of the bracing ear.
4 Torque all bolts according to the specifications found in the table on page 10.
5 Check bolt grade. Due to redesign and the use of Grade 8 bolts, Access
braces no longer need welding. Please make sure you aren’t using lighter grade
bolts that are for use elsewhere on the tower. Welding is still required for “Z”, “K”,
“Diamond” Braces, as well as the 8x8 stages 5&6 access brace found on page 40.

Z Access Bracing
Z access braces are used when the positioning of the exiting equipment is toward one
corner of the tower. Brownie can supply you with two different styles of Z access braces.
Single Z access bracing with right side access is shown in figure a1 on the next page.
These same braces can be flipped for left side access or flipped for top and bottom
access. Single Z access bracing consists of the following:
2 - horizontals (heavy pipe with plates on each end)
1 - Z diagonal (heavy pipe with plates on each end and a welded stiffening rib on one side)
1 - short diagonal

“Landing platforms.” When ladders are used to ascend to heights exceeding
20 feet (except on chimneys), landing platforms shall be provided for each 30
feet of height or fraction thereof, except that, where no cage, well, or ladder
safety device is provided, landing platforms shall be provided for each 20 feet
of height or fraction thereof. Each ladder section shall be offset from adjacent
sections. Where installation conditions (even for a short, unbroken length)
require that adjacent sections be offset, landing platforms shall be provided
at each offset.
