Values Clarification Approach

Values Clarification is an approach that helps clients clarify their goals,

priorities and values, make decisions, and implement changes in their
lives. It is not an approach to mental health counseling by itself, but it
can be integrated into many mental health counseling approaches.

The objective of values clarification is to help individuals identify and clarify their personal values
and priorities, and to use this understanding to make more informed and intentional choices in
their lives.

This approach allows the G/C/T child to explore many areas of his/her life and the implications
of this self-knowledge for life both now and in the future. The basic processes in developing a
value involve three levels of operation: prizing, choosing, and acting.

Example: Values clarification exercises can help with identifying obstacles in various areas of
life. For example, in a professional environment, questions can be asked about job satisfaction
and direction. Regarding romantic relationships, exercises can explore what is healthy or
unhealthy and where the relationship is headed.

professional lives.
