Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis

Special Collections

Photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis have become increasingly important areas of

research in chemistry. These approaches in catalysis have proven to be useful in the
development of efficient and sustainable systems for energy conversion and
environmental remediation. In addition to their potential to transform our energy
production and waste management systems, photocatalysis- and photoelectrocatalysis-
based technologies are also used in a large number of applications across chemistry
disciplines. Together with Guest Editors Mohammad Mansoob Khan (Universiti Brunei
Darussalam) and Youngku Sohn (Chungnam National University Korea), ChemistryOpen
and ChemistrySelect have organized this Special Collection to highlight this rapidly
developing field.

Call for Papers

Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis: From Research to Applications
Submission deadline: Sunday, 31 December 2023

Photocatalysis is the acceleration of a photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst or photocatalyst. A

photocatalyst is a material that absorbs light to bring it to a higher energy level and provides such
energy to a reacting substance to make a chemical reaction take place. Photoelectrocatalysis is an
electrochemical reaction over an electrocatalyst assisted by photoirradiation. These complementary
methods are a promising technology for future energy and environmental remediation.

Photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis promise solutions to challenges associated with the

intermittent nature of sunlight that is considered a renewable and ultimate energy source to power
activities on Earth. Other examples are water splitting, hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, water
treatment and disinfection, removal of pollutants from wastewater, photocatalytic tiles, photocatalytic
paints, self-cleaning window panels based on photoactive materials, and many more. Hence, there is
a need to understand the fundamental concepts of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis in a
simple way.

This special collection jointly organized by ChemistryOpen and ChemistrySelect, providing a complete
overview of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, combining the theoretical, fundamental, and
applied concepts of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis with the synthesis of novel
photocatalysts, electrocatalysts, reaction engineering, and exploring several important applications of
photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis. Most importantly, this special collection will mainly focus on
the technologies for the laboratory to markets such as energy conversion and environmental
remediation.

Topics for this call for papers include but not restricted to:

 Covers all recently developed laboratories to market technologies that assist in energy
conversion and environmental remediation
 Clearly shows the fundamental understanding of laboratories to market technologies
 Clearly demonstrates the fundamental understanding and mechanism of energy conversion and
environmental remediation
 Contains contributions from leading international experts working on energy conversion and
environmental remediation
