Growing up, for me, in Orlando a program like this, too, would have benefited many
people and honestly, I am surprised it has taken this long for a dual language program to be even
optional in Florida. Even now, at least in central Florida, there isn’t even an option for kids to be
in a dual language teaching class. They are only given the option to learn a second language in
middle or high school to help fill their two-year requirement for foreign language to graduate.
My son, who is now 5, goes to one of the elementary schools here in Broward County and is in
one of the 3 dual language kindergarten classes offered at his school. Though it is optional, I felt
it was essential for him to learn from such a young age to help him later in life for job
opportunities and the ever-growing, diverse population to give him his best chance at
relationships with others. Reflecting on my time in school, I wish I would have learned Spanish
from such a young age because only taking the two years, never really taught me anything when
