1.0 Installing the Printer

1.1 Introduction
NOTICE If you are installing this device onto a 15 A SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound imaging system, you
must first upgrade the system to a 20 A system.

This procedure describes the installation of the black-and-white (B/W) video printer into the
upper OEM bay of the SONOLINE Elegra system.

1.1.1 Required Installation Kit

One installation kit is available:
„ UP-890MD (NTSC and PAL) Installation Kit (M/N 45 22 863)
The installation kit includes all required accessories for completion of the installation.

1.1.2 Required Tools

The installation requires standard field tools.

1.1.3 Preparation

Preparing the Ultrasound System

1. Turn off the system and disconnect the power cable from the external main power
source.

! WARNING To avoid damage to the system and to the accessories caused by short circuit or injuries to
yourself caused by electric shock during installation, ensure that you have disconnected
the system power cable from the external main power source before you begin with the
installation.

2. Move the system if necessary to provide enough space for easy access during the
installation.
3. Lock the wheels to prevent the system from rolling during the installation.

Preparing the Printer

Set the switches on the front panel of the printer as follows (Figure 1):
1. Set the PRINT SIZE switch to NORMAL.
2. Set the STD/SIDE switch to SIDE.
3. Set the THRU/EE switch to EE.
4. Set the CONTR (contrast) switch to the center position.
5. Turn the BRIGHT (brightness) switch left to the third mark from the center position.

After setting the switches on the front panel set the switches on the rear panel of the printer:
6. Set the GAMMA switch to II.
7. Set the PAPER TYPE switch to IV.
8. Set the DIP switches 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12 to ON, all others to OFF.

1.2 Installation Procedure

1.2.1 Mounting the Printer

1. Remove the system side panels to gain access to the OEM bay and Distribution Board.
2. Disconnect the OEM tray ground wire (green/yellow; see Figure 2) from the system
chassis and pull the tray out of the upper OEM bay until it is completely extended.
3. Remove the small drawer.

NOTICE If there is a VCR installed in the upper OEM bay you must unbundle and disconnect those OEM
cables in order to pull the tray out to the fully extended position.

4. Remove the printer and accessories from the box.

5. Install the mounting bracket on the OEM tray (Figure 2.)

6. Peel off the backing and position the OEM mounting pads on the mounting bracket so
that the hole in each mounting pad is centered around one of the holes in the mounting
bracket.
7. Place the printer on the tray with the printer feet positioned in the mounting pad holes.
8. Secure the printer to the OEM tray using one nylon strap in the front slots of the OEM
tray, as shown in Figure 2. Loop the end of the strap through the slots in the sides of
the tray and tighten so that the printer is held securely to the tray. Position the buckle
on the right side of the printer.

NOTICE If a VCR or medium drawer is also installed in the upper OEM bay, use one nylon strap to fasten
both the printer and the VCR or drawer to the OEM tray.

1.2.2 Connecting the Cables

1. Attach the video cable as follows (see Figure 1):
• Printer Ctrl 1 (white cable) to the REMOTE connector
• YOUT to the VIDEO IN connector
2. Attach the appropriate connector of the power cord to the power receptacle.
3. Route the cables through the back of the OEM bay (under the fans) so you can get at
them from the rear.
4. Slide the tray and OEM all the way in.
5. Attach the video cable to J14 on the Distribution Board.
6. Secure the cable to the plastic cable tie strip to the right side of the Distribution Board.
7. Plug the appropriate power cord connector into an open outlet on the OEM AC power
strip on the top of the power supply.
8. Reconnect the OEM tray ground cable (green/yellow wire as shown in Figure 2) to
the system chassis in its original location.

1.2.3 Updating the OEM Configuration File

1. Plug the laptop into the system and establish a connection with the system software.
2. Select the Diagnostic User Interface.
3. From the SYS menu, select oem.
4. From the OEM menu find oemcfg and select options.
5. Select the SONY UP890 by clicking on the corresponding part number.
6. Type Y (yes) and press Enter.
7. If you are removing any OEMs from the system, click on the corresponding part num-
ber for the OEM being removed and enter N (no).
8. Select Back to return to the OEM menu.
9. Select oemcfg and verify that all installed OEM devices (and only those OEM devices
that are installed on the system) appear on the display.
10. Exit DUI and disconnect it from the system. The SONOLINE Elegra system will auto-
matically reboot.

1.2.4 Setting System Presets

1. Turn on the system and printer.
2. Select the Presets folder icon on the touchscreen of the system. Then select System
Presets on the folder page displayed on the lower half of the touchscreen.
3. Select External Equipment on the monitor screen, and then press Set.
4. Assign Print 1 and Print 2 keys according to the OEMs installed as follows.
5. Save the changes and exit the menu.

1.3 Operational Test

1. Load paper into the printer if necessary.
2. Acquire an image and press Freeze. Set the brightness and contrast according to the
table below. Make a test print after each setting and verify the print quality.

3. Use these values as a starting point. Adjust the CONTR and BRIGHT knobs as nec-
essary to suit the customer’s preference. Refer to the operating instructions of the
printer to optimize the print settings if necessary.

1.4 Concluding the Installation

1. Reattach the system panel(s) if applicable.
2. Go over the operation of the printer with the customer and answer any questions the
customer has regarding the operation or installation.
