Introduction to Bio Mechatronics – MCT 343

The The Exam Consists of two Questions in two Pages Total Marks: 20 Marks

Support your answers with sketches as much as you can

Question 1: (10 Marks)

a. Draw the block diagram of the physiological motor control system and show its interaction with
assistive/rehabilitation devices in case of impaired motor control system. In the light of this diagram,
show on the block diagram how you can develop a system that allows people with a spinal cord injury
and paralyzed legs to move their limbs again to prevent muscle diminishing due to not using them.
support your answer using sketches and block diagram. [3 Marks]
b. Why are force platforms used in motion analysis? And how could you calculate center of pressure
(CoP) from its readings? Support your answer with sketches and equations [4 Marks]
c. Design an adaptive controlled 1 DoF hydraulic prosthetic ankle-foot mechanism that is capable to
assist the gait in sagittal plane by controlling the amount of energy going in and out of the prosthetic
carbon fiber springs in order to produce more nature resistance of dorsiflexion/plantarflexion. Draw a
schematic drawing for its mechanical and hydraulic and briefly explain its working principle. [3
Marks]

Question 2: (10 Marks)

a. Consider a person wearing a weight boot, and from a sitting position as shown on
the right, doing lower leg flexion/extension exercises to strengthen the quadriceps
muscles. Let W1 representing the weight of the lower leg equals 150N, W0
representing the weight of the boot that equals 100N, FM is the magnitude of the
tensile force exerted by the quadriceps muscle on the tibia through the patellar
tendon, and FJ is the magnitude of the tibiofemoral joint reaction force applied by
the femur on the tibial plateau. The tibiofemoral joint center is located at point O,
the patellar tendon is attached to the tibia at point A, the center of gravity of the
lower leg is located at point B, and the center of gravity of the weight boot is located
at point C. The distances between point O and points A, B, and C are measured as
a = 12cm, b = 22cm, c = 50 cm, respectively. For the position of the lower leg
shown, the long axis of the tibia makes an angle β = 45o with the horizontal, and
the line of action of the quadriceps muscle force makes an angle θ = 15⁰ with the
long axis of the tibia. Draw a free body diagram of the tibia and determine FM and
FJ in vector form and their magnitudes. Also, state the different cases of lever
mechanisms and how to differentiate between them by giving examples in
biomedical applications. [5 marks]

b. A rehabilitation device targeting the knee extension is shown on the right. The
person is seated on a table. The upper body is strapped to a back rest and the
right thigh is strapped firmly on the table with the lower leg hanging vertically
downward. The rehabilitation robot is used to extend the right lower leg. The
angular displacement of the lower leg during knee extension is determined via
a goniometer attached to the leg. After a series of computations, it is determined
that the lower leg was extended from θ = 0⁰ to 90⁰ in a time period of 0.5s with
a maximum angular velocity of 3rad/s by following a symmetric trapezoidal
motion profile in which the speed was constant for 80% of the time period.
Assuming that the mass moment of inertia of the lower leg and robot about the
center of rotation of the knee joint is 92×10-2 kg m2, the length of the leg is
60cm with a concentrated mass of 12Kg representing the robot and leg acting
at its midpoint. Calculate the RMS torque needed to select a motor with a
gearbox of a gearing ratio of 7 and an efficiency of 85%. Also, state the
difference between stall torque and rated torque. [5 marks]
