INTRODUCTION

"When the atmosphere encourages learning, the learning is inevitable"

- Elizabeth Foss

In today's dynamic educational landscape, students pursuing a degree in

criminology face a unique set of challenges. Among these challenges, the living

environment plays a crucial role in shaping their overall learning experience. This study

delves into the impact of boarding houses on the academic and personal development of

criminology students. By exploring how the choice of accommodation affects their

learning environment, social interactions, and academic performance, we aim to shed

light on the multifaceted relationship between housing arrangements and the educational

journey of these students.

The pursuit of higher education is a transformative journey that extends beyond

the boundaries of the classroom. For many students, especially those pursuing demanding

disciplines like criminology, the quality of their learning environment plays a pivotal role

in shaping their educational experience and overall academic success. Boarding houses,
as an integral part of student life, are often overlooked factors that can significantly

impact the well-being, focus, and overall academic performance of students.

This study delves into the intricate relationship between boarding houses and the

learning environment of selected criminology students at Innovative College of Science

and Technology, aiming to shed light on how these off-campus accommodations

influence their educational journey. Through an in-depth analysis of various aspects such

as living conditions, social interactions, and availability of resources, this research seeks

to provide valuable insights into the multifaceted impact of boarding houses on the

academic and personal development of criminology students. In doing so, we hope to

provide valuable insights for students, educators, and policymakers seeking to optimize

the learning environment for aspiring criminologists. Ultimately, this exploration strives

to contribute to a better understanding of the holistic educational experience, with the

hope of informing policies and practices that enhance the learning environment for these

students.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

KOLB'S EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THEORY

Kolb (1984) Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory posits that learning is a continuous

process grounded in experience. It emphasizes four distinct learning styles: Converging

(practical application of ideas), Diverging (viewing situations from multiple

perspectives), Assimilating (organizing information logically), and Accommodating

(hands-on experimentation). In the context of learning environments, Kolb argues that

effective learning occurs when experiences are followed by reflective observation,

abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. This cyclical process fosters a

dynamic interplay between concrete experiences and abstract conceptualization, allowing

learners to adapt and apply knowledge in diverse situations. Hence, a conducive learning

environment encourages varied experiences, reflective thinking, meaningful discussions,

and opportunities for practical application, accommodating the diverse learning styles of

individuals.

Concrete learning is when a learner gets a new experience or interprets an

experience in a new way.

Reflective observation comes next, where the learner reflects on their experience

personally. They use the lens of their experience and understanding to reflect on what this

experience means.

Abstract conceptualization happens as the learner forms new ideas or adjusts their

thinking based on the experience and their reflection about it.

Active experimentation is where the learner applies the new ideas to the world

around them, to see if there are any modifications to be made. This process can happen

over a short period of time, Or over a long span of time.

Kolb went on to explain that learners will have their own preferences for how

they enter the cycle of experiential learning, and that these preferences boil down to a

learning cycle.

This theory is applicable and would be helpful to this study because it talks about

the stages where a person develops his/her learning capabilities. To adapt new

knowledgeable way of improving one's ability to attain the desired goal of learning.

ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING THEORY

Bandura (year) stated that Environmental learning theory is heavily dependent on

the environment being provided for the learner to take part in. The environmental theory

is concerned with the modeling that occurs for the learner. This theory was developed

under the primary beliefs and research of well-known theorist Albert Bandura. According

to Bandura the importance of observing and modeling behaviors as a way of learning

cannot be ignored. He has stated in many of his works that people learn by watching the

actions, successes, and mistakes of others so that they have knowledge before moving

into the learning phase of content. He attributes a lot of the learning process to the

observation and coding of behaviors and using those elements as a guide when

approaching new learning.

This theory makes sense to this study because it intends to explore how a person

cope up in studying despite of the environment where he belongs and the possible impact

of the behavior in the learning capabilities.
