Leaving New York City doesnt mean leaving a rich and vital history
he Suburbs: most New Yorkers react with aversion to the thought of fresh air, quiet streets, and drivingack!but for those who see the Big Apple as only a place of work and play, finding the endlessly symbolic dwelling we call home means going elsewhere. The bustling, yet sometimes overwhelming, energy of the city
often draws the hearts and minds of starry-eyed twenty-somethings looking to become twenty-something somebodies. The thriving dynamic force may be the citys allure at first, but after a few years, one hundred Brooklyn loft parties, and a dozen sinister roommates, the grown-up life of stability you secretly wanted
all along (but pretended you were too cool for) arrives just in time. In the end, most New Yorkers will stay to feel connected to the history and legacy of the arts, theater and media industries, but others would rather connect to the history of home. For those commuters, Bronxville and South Orange Village, are the best getaways. The Lawrence Park Historic District is where the Mohican Indians deeded the territory to Thomas Pell and the first white settlers in the seventeenth century. Its residential history is founded on the vision of wealthy businessman William Van Duzer Lawrence (who also founded Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville in 1920). Van Duzer bought the 86-acre farm and transformed it into a subdivided residential area in 1891 with the help of the well-known, decadent Victorian architect William Bates. Soon after, the area became a hot spot residence for New York City authors and artists, like Charlie Chaplin and William Howe, who sought its picturesque revival styles. Lawrence Park looks almost no different today, maintaining the same magnetism from the neighborhoods distincTO AdverTise: 212-407-9386

tive design, sweeping lawns and groomed landscapes. One more expensive home, is a two-story 1886 hilltop Dutch revival complete with a full artist studio at $3.2 million. However this beautiful period home doesnt come close to the $9.2 million five bedroom mansion tucked away in Masterton Woods. The more modest on the spectrum is, a still gorgeous, $310,000 pre-war two-bedroom, suitable for any small family. Cedar Knolls is another designated historic district in Bronxville and a great place to look for period homes. Each of these architecturally unique homes is protected by the areas Landmark Status granted in 1996. Although located in Yonkers, Cedar Knolls shares an address with Bronxville, which boasts itself the 21st most affluent in the nation. The homes, built before the Great Depression, were constructed as part of the colonial, French Norman, Italian renaissance and Mediterranean revivals, each given its own distinguishable aesthetic and design. The charming garden suburb is ideal for families who seek the assurance of a tight-knit community, often lost in a densely populated city. As of August, the median list price for one of the 144 Cedar Knolls homes is $272,000. Affordability ranges, but there are plenty of opportunities for starter homes with one bedroom houses ranging from $84,000 to $275,000. For those with a greater income the most expensive homes range from six bedrooms at $975,000 to eight bedrooms at $1.8 million.
New Jersey: another two words that make most urbanites cringe. If youve lived in the city long enough, youre probably well aware of the nice parts of New Jersey. South Orange Village is another area ripe with history. The territory was purchased from the Lenape Native Americans in 1666. The 1800s saw the development of country clubs, an influx of wealthy families from New York City, and the historic Village Hall. While the homes are less modest than that of Bronxville, they are more affordable on the affluent side and more spacious. For example, a sprawling, seven bedroom and six bath, Grand Colonial is just $975,000. However the typical price for any one of these landmark homes is around $600,000. Leaving New York City doesnt mean leaving a rich and vital history. These quaint and beautifully designed neighborhoods are ideal for purchasing period homes.
