HISTORY OF KAYAK
NAME MATRIC ID
The kayak is a type of small, narrow boat that is traditionally made of animal skins stretched
over a wooden frame. The history of the kayak dates back thousands of years and is closely
tied to the indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions.
The word "kayak" comes from the Inuit language, where it originally referred to a hunting
boat made of animal skins. The Inuit people of the Arctic, along with other indigenous
peoples such as the Aleut and Yupik, used kayaks as a means of transportation and for
hunting and fishing.
Early kayaks were made from driftwood or whalebone frames, covered with seal or walrus
skins. These boats were lightweight and maneuverable, making them ideal for navigating the
icy waters of the Arctic.
Over time, kayaks evolved to include more sophisticated designs and materials. In the early
20th century, kayaks made of wood and canvas became popular in Europe and North
America, and later, fiberglass and plastic kayaks were introduced.
Today, kayaking is a popular sport and recreational activity, enjoyed by people around the
world. Modern kayaks come in a variety of designs and materials, from traditional skin-on-
frame kayaks to high-tech, lightweight models made of carbon fiber.
Despite its evolution over time, the kayak remains an important part of the cultural heritage
of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, and its legacy continues to be celebrated through
events such as the Arctic Winter Games.
