Purpose of
Writing an TYPES of
Assertion ASSERTION

1. Basic Assertion
It is for the writer to convey
directly an idea or feeling
2. Empathic Assertion
and to convince the reader 3. I-Language Assertion
to accept the writer’s
interpretation of a particular
literary work.
BASIC
ASSERTION
It is a statement
used to express the
writer's feelings,
beliefs, and
opinions directly.
Example:
The Philippines has an advanced civilization
before the colonization of Spain. Form and
branches of government, social structure, and
the existence of ancient writing are some of the
evidence that proves the advancement of the
precolonial period.
EMPATHIC
ASSERTION

A statement used to express

empathy or on how a person
understands the feelings and
emotions of the literary author.
Example:
I know that the Philippines, before pre-Spaniard
colonization has a system of writing called the
“baybayin.” This alone proves that the Filipinos
are literate as opposed to the Spaniards’ claim.
I-LANGUAGE
ASSERTION
A statement used to express the
feeling and preferences of the
writer.
It is composed of Three parts.

The first part contains accurate information from literary work, especially
the topic the writer disagrees with (When you. . .).

The second part includes the effect or feeling of the writer towards
the topic (It affects/I feel...).

The last part includes the preference or recommendation of the writer

(Therefore, I prefer/I want...).
Example:
Upon reading that the ancient Filipino civilization
is divided into three social classes namely the
‘maharlika’, ‘timawa’, and ‘alipin’, I feel proud
because of the civilization’s social advancement
and at the same time sad because of the
promulgation of social differentiation. With this
finding, I want to do further research on the
existence of these social classes’ stigma.

an explanation about your statements.

Conducting online classes today is ideal, there is no doubt about it, but ours is
considered a third-world country. Having an online class is possible and but it is
never fair to all students especially those studying in public schools’ Online
classes are financially demanding and most likely, most of the learners' families
cannot cope with these demands. Most of the students in public schools do not
have the gadgets or fast internet service connections necessary for online
classes. Teachers cannot just hold these classes to a small number of the class
only because most students have no means to join. Those who are not privileged
of sufficient income will be denied of the learnings attained in activities and
discussions. Public schools can conduct online classes, but it would be
discriminating because it is selective. The learning experiences would not be the
same for everybody and the poor will certainly be on the losing end.
