Figure 46-1 The normal electroencephalogram (EEG) in an.
awake human subject.
‘A.A standard set of placements for EEG electrodes over the
surface of the scalp. The electrical activity between electrode
pais in this bipolar montage is compared.
BB, EEG activity of an awake human subject, At the beginning of
the recording, the EEG shows low-voltage (crce 20 wN) activity

‘over the surface of the scalp. The vertical lines are placed at 1~
s intervals. During the fist 8 8 the subject rested quietly with
‘eyes open, then closed his eyes. Note the develosment of
largerampitude (8-10 Hz) activity over the occipital region
(treces 3-r4, 4-05, 85, 12-13, 18-16, and 16-+13). This is
the normal alpha rhythm characteristic of the relaxed, wakeful
state, Note the slow large-emplitude eye blink artifact at 3.5 s
‘and the artifact on eye closure at 9. Calibration 1 s, 100 wV.
