HelpAge India voices the concerns of elders to help them live a more dignified existence. Established in 1978, its mission is “to work for
the cause and care of disadvantaged older persons and to improve their quality of life”.
The organisation's programmes are focused on direct interventions in the areas of healthcare, agecare, livelihoods, digital literacy,
disaster response and advocating for elder rights. The aim is to serve disadvantaged elders in a holistic manner, enabling them to live
healthy, active, dignified lives. HelpAge advocates for elder needs such as, universal pension, quality healthcare, action against elder
abuse and many more at the national, state and societal level, with the Central and State governments.

HELPAGE PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES

Vaccinations: We have been working
towards supporting the government’s
COVID-19 Vaccination programme by
facilitating vaccination of elders in both rural &
urban areas to safeguard them against the
deadly virus. We helped with vaccination
facilitation of more than 18 lakh elders & their
community.
Mobile Healthcare Units: HelpAge’s Mobile Healthcare
Unit (MHU) programme has been recognized as Asia’s
largest mobile healthcare network for elders. More than
170 MHUs spread over 24 states and provide
approximately 20 lakh treatments every year. It seeks to
provide sustainable healthcare solutions to disadvantaged
elders and their community. Each MHU is equipped with a
doctor, pharmacist and a trained social worker.
Restoration of Vision: 90% of those suffering from
cataract in our country are elderly. It effects their
livelihood, day-to-day living and quality of life. Since
1980, HelpAge’s ‘Restoration of Vision’ programme
has benefitted more than 12 lakh elders, not just
restoring their sight, but also enabling them to go
back to work and live a life of dignity. The surgeries
are carried out through tie-ups with credible and
competent eye hospitals.
Livelihood Support: HelpAge organises disadvantaged
elders in villages, into sustainable Elder-Self-Help-Groups
(ESHGs) so they can sustain themselves through a
livelihood of their choice and have a ready pool of income
in their time of need. This pioneering model of HelpAge
India has been adopted by the Ministry of Rural
Development. Over 1 lakh elderly have been provided
financial security with the establishment of more than 8000
ESHGs, 70% of which are now functioning independently.
Support a Gran: There are thousands of elders
who cannot even afford basic food and clothing to
sustain their day-to-day living. HelpAge India has
enabled more than 30,000 destitute elders through
its Support-a-Gran progamme, by providing them
regular supplies of food rations, clothing, basic
healthcare and some pocket money, so they can
live a life of dignity.
Elder Helpdesks: We provide Geriatric care
assistance to elders through the HelpAge Helpdesks
set up at hospitals, currently operational at AIIMS
(Delhi), AIIMS (Rishikesh), AIIMS (Raipur), Rajiv
Gandhi Government General Hospital (Chennai) and
Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical
Sciences (Lucknow).
Old Age Homes: Many elders are often abandoned
by their own family and loved ones, and some don’t
have the means to afford a roof over their heads,
especially the destitute elderly. We run 8 barrier free
homes for the aged in 5 states and support more than
300 homes for the disadvantaged across India. We
also run 18 Agecare centres in 5 States. These homes
rescue and rehabilitate urban abandoned elders and
provide them a home away from home.
Elder Helplines: We support lakhs of elders with
information, guidance and response as one of the
implementing partners for the national ‘Elderline
14567’ initiative under Ministry of Social Justice &
Empowerment, Government of India.
Digital Literacy for Elders: Increasing pace of
change in technology often excludes elders from
the mainstream social fabric. To tackle this,
HelpAge runs a ‘Digital Literacy’ programme
introducing elders to the online world so they can
become independent & self-reliant and stay
connected with their near and dear ones.
Geriatric Physiotherapy: With increasing age,
many elders are prone to musculoskeletal diseases
such as back pain, arthritis, paralysis and other
age-related mobility challenges. Through this
program we aim to help improve the mobility levels
of elders and make daily living easier for them. The
services are provided to the elderly through
stationary physiotherapy clinics, mobile services for
home visits and old age homes.

As we move ahead this year with renewed vigour and optimism towards our goal of providing every elder person
across the country with a life of dignity, respect, good health and fulfilment, we are expanding our scope and
reaching new horizons. The common themes across our most significant landmarks have been of creating inclusion,
access and a sense of community for senior citizens in urban and rural India.
Mental health issues such as loneliness, depression and anxiety, have been on the rise among the elderly, especially
since the COVID-19 pandemic, but are receiving very little attention or support. To tackle this challenge, we
launched ‘Saarthak’ – a community-based initiative for the Mental Wellbeing of Elderly, in collaboration with the
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). We continue to expand our primary healthcare
programme through Mobile Healthcare Units to reach more than 8 lakh elderly and disadvantaged community
members every year.
In a move to empower India’s elders to tap into the convenience of digitally-accessible services whilst ensuring that
they are protected against internet fraud and scams, we launched ‘Project Surakshit’, an online safety skills
programme for 50,000 elders across India, with grant support from Google.org. Live workshops are being held
across the country, where senior citizens get guidance on various online safety topics such as how to identify online
scams, paying bills safely, secure online banking, etc.
As one of the implementing partners for the national ‘Elderline 14567’ initiative under the Ministry of Social Justice
& Empowerment (MoSJE), Government of India, HelpAge listens to lakhs of elders and supports them through
information, guidance and response. Recognised as the ‘Technical Support Organisation’ for inclusion of elderly
under the ‘National Rural Livelihoods Mission’, we are working to scale up community based Elder-Self-Help Groups
(ESHGs) towards empowering elders in rural areas through social, financial and digital inclusion.
Overall, this year has helped further progress on our multi-pronged approach to eldercare, where we strive to
impact every key area of an elder’s life, whether it be healthcare, agecare, livelihood or public policy. There is much
to be done and lakhs of elders still need our help. This can only be done if we come together and contribute our bit.
