ABSTRACT

Environmental Pollution is one of the major challenges faced by global society, due to rapid growth in
industrialization and advancement.Tannery effluents emanated from textile industries contain various
organic chemicals, such as dye stuffs, chrome dyes and other chemicals during various productions that
can lead to large liquid waste discharge containing heavy metals. For biological treatment of these heavy
metals as environmental pollutants, Iron resistance bacteria was isolated and identified from engine oil
contaminated soil. The effect of temperature and various concentrations of iron on percentage removal
capacity of the bacteria were also investigated under varying conditions for a period of 72hrs. The
bacteria isolated from the soil were identified as Staphylococcus spacie (a gram positive bacteria) by
different biochemical tests and microscopic identification (gram staining). The highest percentage
removal capacity of the bacteria was recorded as 89.78 % at100gm/l of iron solution. This work reveals
that Staphylococcus spacie can have capacity to resist lead.
